Before too many crazy comments come in let me explain a few things i should have in the video. 1. Its just a wheel well and some trunk sheet metal, were not working with frame rails here. 2. Although this might not look the cleanest (you'll never see it anyways), the OEM inner panels to replace everything would cost thousands of dollars and then to fit the widebody id have to cut most of them in half. So that seemed like a giant waste of time and money to me.

Well I’ve been watching this channel for a while and I need to say I just can’t take the hackery any longer. I have seen so many things that have just made me cringe. The corner cutting just to get things finished quickly is irresponsible and unsafe. Now that you have chosen a fairly quick car to “build” I would have hoped to see some true workmanship. I liked how you put the heated seat elements into your new seats. But leaving out the airbag sensor just because you put camera gear on your seat sometimes is highly irresponsible. Use the trunk. Also I feel like since that left rear wheel well has the strut bolted to it it may need to be stronger than how you’ve made it in this video. A lot of force is focused to that strut mount area. And even if it isn’t structural and nobody will ever see it, take some pride and build it as if everybody will see it. That’s what separates the pros from the amateurs. Im not trying to bash this channel but I read a lot of comments from younger people who are probably just getting into vehicles and messing around with them. Why not show them the right way to do things. All the best but I am unsubscribing.

Those spot welds will start break one by one. Body is flexible. That is why it’s spot welded. You had to fully weld that inner quarter panel to the car. Slowly, with the compressed air. Instantly cooling the welding spots. 3-4 spot welds, filling. And so on. What you did, is wrong. You have to take sealer off, weld everything properly.

While I understand nobody at all will see it, better to do the job once properly, than having to redo work again later? What’s the benefits on spot welding it to full seam weld?
@estxcrew6 жыл бұрын
You can't really weld metal that thin in one go without things starting to bend. To get a full seam effect you'd more or less have to do bits here and there until you cover the entire seam. What you see here in the wheel well is more of a tack weld than a spot weld though. Spot welds are very strong if done correctly (as is displayed by his inability to drill out factory spot welds with a regular drill).
@SCOTTCOD46 жыл бұрын
estXcrew Thank you for the reply. I was thinking maybe heat and warping would of been an issue. Would ‘tubbing’ out the wheel wells been a better option? Like you see in some race cars! One should still be plenty sufficient to vent air when closing the trunk lid.

How do you plan on sealing the quarter panel to the arch you just made? Since it’s not metal.

It doesn't really need to be sealed, as long as water can drain.

Why rush the weld and fix on your year quarter panel?
@RealCapricousCavy6 жыл бұрын
If you have some really rough surface connects, use expansion foam meant for wider gaps. I used that stuff on a winter beater Legacy that required a bunch of welded-in supports to the rear strut in place after it broke (car is too good of a runner to just junk it and only sees snow usage a couple months of the year) clean-free and had rough gaps from rust and outright missing metal. That stuff completely sealed the entire fender liner area out, sealed some big holes, etc. and the hatch area is bone dry. Can be trimmed and used sparingly, but works 100%. If used on inside seams/joints with gaps, it'll help a bunch. Can be trimmed and sealed over, painted over, etc..
@xjrrider67106 жыл бұрын
Wow... I would not want to be in that if it’s wrecked again. I appreciate budget but those “jiggly shapes” in each panel add a fair bit of strength. Please buy proper panels. And you do need the extra flap in the trunk area. I know you’re keeping it but... wow Can’t wait to see this finished though!

I work in an automotive manufacturing plant. Most of the time a repair like this is ABSOLUTELY fine. Cars are manufactured with overkill engineering. Way more spot welds than needed,sealer and adhesive as strong, or stronger than welds etc.. This is perfectly repaired.

Glad you didn't get welding slag from stick welding in your eye. That's what happened to me. It ended up burning into my eye, after I got it surgically removed I was good as new :). Yes I was wearing a helmet and saftey glasses. I was working over head and it bounced.

I'm scared to see how you are going to attach the CF fender to the home made inner fender...this build/repair definitely puts the "B" in backyard fix :)...My fav part was definitely “these seams are looking much better after they’re all sealed up”...as you then do the rapid camera movement where nobody can focus clearly on one “completed” seam...clever trick
