I had an O-200 that the crank dialed in perfectly on a routine check. A rebuild after purchase found NO reported history of a strike but the engine shop found a crack in the front journal. So, a prop strike went unreported and couldve ended very badly for me in the air.

This is why in Australia it is mandatory to have everything in the engine crack tested and a full rebuild after a prop strike.

To me cleaning is just part of the repair. When I see stuff looking just as dirty as it was before the repair it always make me wonder if they actually did the repair or if some shop told their customer they needed something that wasn't actually needed to get some extra money and then just pocketed the money. Cleaning up what you worked on makes it look like work was done, and makes it easier to work on for everyone after.

Can I make a suggestion? To keep the audience updated, and avoid the inevitable "what happened to the 401" question every episode - why not start each episode with a status update on your main projects? Even if it's just a quick run-down in a list? It would help the audience keep track of what projects to watch for in upcoming episodes, plus avoid the constant whining in comments about the 401 progress due to things like waiting on parts...

@ 18:00 - you are looking at the Standby Vacuum System’s source for vacuum should the engine driven vacuum pump fail in IFR conditions. The pilot pulls a lever in the cockpit that connects that cylinders intake pipe vacuum to the vacuum driven gyros. It is a FAA approved mod. It allows the pilot to get out of IFR conditions (declare an emergency and land ASAP) rather than continue using this source of vacuum. I have installed this mod on numerous customers aircraft. There should be a FAA Form 337 in the paperwork for this mod.

Anytime you tear down an airframe/engine, you will find unexpected things that need attention and repair. That being said! If it aint broken, don't fix it. A new part isn't ALWAYS a good part. A rebuilt engine is always better than one with 1,000 hours(can you feel the sarcasm?)! Repair procedures - and serviceability criteria - have been developed over time from real world data. You can trust it - you don't want to start the second guessing game. Follow the procedures, and going "the extra mile" ensures nothing.. nothing. Imo...

You know, I would think that a person who has an airplane would want to keep the thing in pristine condition considering the unit cost and the need for safety/reliability. But, some of the aircraft you work on look like they were used by someone who had trekked across the back forty and got into the plane along with some of their livestock. Well, it is good to see that you put things back to a clean start. Good work!
@MGower44659 ай бұрын
You'd think so, but at the same time, hangar space can be scarce and expensive. You don't want to be taking a ton of stuff out so you can spend maybe a couple hours cleaning and then you have to stuff everything back in overnight, but then you trap all the humidity from cleaning in the fabric of the carpets, seats, side panels, etc. One could run an airplane-detailing business, getting a hunk of space in a hangar to work in, but nobody thinks about cleaning until they want to fly, so *every* job would be a rush. And if you aren't careful, the airplane you just finished gets stuck behind two other planes and you spend an hour just getting it out. And planes come in just about every size variation so fitting everything without bumping wingtips would be a very expensive full-scale Tetris game.

9:44 OMG! JB Weld is NOT an option for engine repair on an airplane! Did someone have a death wish when they did that? JB Weld is fine for a non critical part that does nothing to the function of the plane like decorative plastic trim inside that nobody makes any more, but something that makes the plane crash if it fails, absolutely not. I mean if you was stranded on an island and the only way to fix it was with JB Weld sure, but once home that plane would be grounded until I could get the parts to fix it right.

Yes, the weekly waiting on parts rant. Both sides, instead of complaining: Read AC 43-18 on the fabrication of replacement parts by maintenance personnel and AC 20-62 on replacement parts (which includes owner produced parts). This will help you understand what owner / operators and maintainers can and can't do. Some of the work is impractical to perform yourself so replacement parts or overhaul by an outside party is necessary. Having said that, a short discussion on this topic by RR and the decision on what items to fix, fab, or farm out would end this dialog.

I bet many unexperienced in this think of this watching and there are reasons you have to just reach in and remove what you can get to and just leave it not sparkling perfect. I know there is grease and rust reason sometimes for not cleaning too extensively. I just hate reaching in now to places with my hands and the cuts or ouches.
