It's been said again and again that most of the work the 401 needs now is time consuming: waiting for parts, paperwork etc. Better leave them do it correctly in the time needed than put pressure on them to make videos about it. Their safety is more important than our entertainment

The "months and months" of video releases is actually only a couple of weeks of time. The whole "road trip" series was one day per video, so almost two months of our watching was one week of work. They started on the TB-20 when they got back because they still needed to wait for parts. Everything they've done on the TB-20 has taken a day or two per video... So it may feel like everything came to a screeching halt and the 401 has been collecting dust on the shelf, so to speak, but the reality is, it's only been a couple of weeks that they've been focused on other stuff. And I can understand, even if some of the 401 parts had arrived, wanting to focus on the TB-20. They get the "new" wings on it and it's DONE, and out of the way, they can get it out of the "working" hangar and clear up space. Too bad they've run into another "hurry up and wait" situation on THAT plane...but at least the parts are available, and they don't have to find people who can fabricate them.

Just curious why would you not send the rams in to be rebuilt and all new seals? Seems like that would be required on the AD also. I would not put on used rams with old seals on this aircraft while you have it out why not get it done . Safety can not be over done. A gear half way down or up and blown seals is never a good thing .

Decades ago, while I was the Repair Parts Petty Officer in the Engine Room of a Submarine, I remember being able to buy Cases of zip lock bags 4x4, 6x6, 8x8, and 12x12 inch bags to put nuts, bolts and other parts in, when doing a job, and when collecting the needed parts (washers, gaskets, O-rings, etc... ) in preparation for doing a job. - take off one of the inspection covers, drop the screws right into the bag and label the bag with location and a tag indicating the number of parts & if cleaning was necessary, etc... - you've had donor parts for the 401, from the 402. - you're getting donor parts for you TBM 20, from another wing. - if you have "Extra" parts, from these donor planes, imagine how many other people would need parts from/for those planes as well. If you were to take those parts with needed hardware, and stored them, I can believe that there might be a clearing house database, to help owners/mechanics to find some of those parts, from other projects. - whether you wanted to have them inspected & certified before storage, or just left it for the next project runner to do for their project, is your choice.

Oh, man...that's gotta be so frustrating, to be so close to being able to finish up the TB-20 and then have to pause for three weeks, waiting on parts for THAT plane, as well. At least you have a solid timetable of when those parts should arrive! I feel for ya...I've got a list of projects at work that are weeks to months behind their original deadlines because we're either waiting on equipment to ship to us or waiting for someone else to finish their project so we can move forward with ours. Once or twice, I can handle...but my list of "on hold" is up to about seven or eight, and at least two of them are big, multi-day projects and not just, "I just need this one part to arrive and it's done." So frustrating!

It still amazes me how much due diligence needs to be done every step of the way (although completely understandable), having been a motorcycle mechanic I can empathise to a certain degree since the failure of parts on motorcycles is far more dangerous to the rider and others than say on a car, anything that can affect the drivetrain at all risks a serious and deadly crash. Fun to see how you get on with metric bolts lol! Being a Harley mechanic in Europe requires tools for both Imperial/US Standard and metric which can get frustrating when you are tired! I also dabble in building air rifles etc.. and some of those use both on the same gun from the factory!!

man i hate seeing all these comments on the 401. These people have never worked in GA, or even worked on a twin cessna. they’re maintenance hogs and the parts have been IMPOSSIBLE to find for the last 20 years. i’ve been a GA mechanic for a couple years and we always have to schedule twin cessnas for a couple months just in case we find something that needs to be replaced. In the off chance you do find the part you needed, it’s going to be an astronomical price because they have ZERO parts support. i had a 421A in for an inspection for over 6 months, where most single engines are in and out within a week if there’s no heavy maintenance required. shoot, even our fleet of PC-12s take a little over a week for inspection. twin cessnas are basically a combination of a mortgage and a child to take care of and keep happy lol. i love them with all my heart (i have one tattooed on my arm) but if you’re not absolutely loaded with cash, it’s going to take FOREVER for even just an annual. Jason, i appreciate all the work you’re doing in showing the world GA work. you inspired me to get back into using my a&p and i can’t thank you enough for it. PS, hopefully we can figure something out with that aerostar at KVGT!!!

@christophergagliano20519 ай бұрын
@@need100k your comment is appropriate, there is lots they can still do on the 401. For one thing they can replace the screws holding the cabin windows in with rivets. They need to do that because the original design called for rivets and for some reason they actually put in screws. Those screws are wrong because they have the wrong countersink angle and they don't match the dimple skin on the fuselage. Also they could paint the wheel wells. Some of the parts of the wheel well are a green primer, some is gray primer and some parts are painted a finished white top coat. In the aviation industry on this level of sophistication all the parts in the wheel well included in the wheel well should be painted a matterhorn white. Painting the wheel well will make both inspection and cleaning much easier than if the wheel well in components are left in primer. So yes many of us are in agreement that things still can be done on the 401, and it's somewhat disappointing that they're not doing these simple things to shorten the restoration process.

I don't normally correct you guys. But Joe used incorrect terminology on the landing gear. He said he was 'Overhauling' the gear. By definition he is repairing gear. To overhaul the gear it would have to be done to an FAA approved overhaul manual. There would be a lot of dimensional checks, inspections, a list of mandatory replacement parts and an ATP. The maintenance manual is not an overhaul manual. Keep up the good work.
