I usually avoid gear reviews, but i have trust in your style of straight to the point, no gimmicks, "this piece of gear has multiple purposes and deserves it's place in a pack" style of review.... When you say it is good to go, it must be worth it's weight. Thank you.

So I'm in pouring rain, wearing my Swagman Poncho and I have to stop and make shelter for the night. Now I have to take off the only rain protection that I am wearing in order to make an overhead shelter out of it. What happens to me? ... I get soaked in rain doing it. My train of thought is never have one option... my carried shelter (tarp, etc) should be my shelter. My poncho should be my poncho. I believe that should be the norm. Who doesn't carry a tarp these days? In 23 years in the military, I never used my poncho for anything other than worn over my body for rain protection, or perhaps sometimes as a ground cloth inside a pup tent, if expecting rain in the night. If I had to stop in the rain and sleep in it (leaning against a tree)... fine, and that was done many times; but I didn't take it off to make a tarp out of it in the driving rain. And we used our woobies inside our sleeping bags... that WAS it's purpose, at least for me and my buddies it was... oh the comfort of a soft woobie inside the bag! You know what I'm talking about!!! One other thing I'm seeing is perhaps a restriction of movement of the arms when connecting that buckle (as a "jacket")? I'd like to see how much actual movement is available when that is done. Doesn't appear too promising. Now then... one thing I really like is this Poncho itself. Do you know how hard it is to get an actual military issue poncho these days? Nearly impossible... you can get Rothco and other brands that "mimic" the issued ponchos, but hard to find the real thing. This poncho is probably the closest to the actual as one will find. Big plus there, and I plan on getting one or two. And yes, I still do have 2 issued ponchos (both woodland pattern), and two issued woobies... considered some of best things I came out of the military with in-hand. Thanks Corporal... carry on. Love the videos!

But if you have a poncho and a swagman roll, then you take off your poncho for shelter setup, and you still have a swagman roll on you to resist pouring water as shown in the video?
@alanwilliams5836
@alanwilliams5836 5 жыл бұрын
@@polniypridumok In the Spring/Summer? why would you have a poncho liner in the Spring/Summer? I'm only taking about only having one option... a poncho that can be used as a primary shelter, or carrying both... a poncho to keep you dry as you move, and a separate tarp for a shelter.
@therealbarista
@therealbarista 3 ай бұрын
idk if my input is worth anything but regarding the issue of maneuverability with the poncho buckled, you can get the same results by simply wearing a belt and running only the front flap of the poncho underneath it, leaving the rear flap over it. This leaves the arms free to move

Good review. Multi-function and very lightweight. Beyond bushcraft, I think these would be great for thru-hikers, etc. And imagine these being distributed by Red Cross during disasters instead of simple blankets along with a Corporal's Ridgeline system. FYI ... I reached out to Helikon to see about a Swagman in multicam black on a side / hi-vis orange on the other. Combo urban grey-man / search & rescue. Coupled with a woodland camo pattern poncho, you'd have 3 of 5 major scenarios / environments covered (not desert or snow). No plans at present but they passed it on to R&D for consideration.

I was just watching one of your old videos, not that old, December, about your EDC and I just wanted to say that when I go to the dentist he always gives me one of those little dispensers of floss and I always toss those in my EDC. Yhey take up no room, add no weight, and they're perfect for whipping rope ends, sewing, trip lines, all different other uses where a very small strong line would be necessary or helpful. You present great stuff.

I received my Helikon Swagman Roll and Poncho in four days..amazing! It was shipped from Manchester, England. The camo I received is called Camogrom, a more subdued woodland with a desert flavor if you will :) The quality of both kits is excellent. Both arrived in well made stuff sacks, the poncho in a Camogrom and the roll in an OD green one. To me the $153 is money more than well spent. I packed them in a Savotta Jaakari S or MiniJaakari pack from Finland (a superb 20L pack) with plenty of room for the rest of my gear (plus food and water) allowing me at least two days out. The other item I purchased was a 500ml Grayl water purifier you and Josh both reviewed. This, too, was money well spent ($55 for the 500ml and $85 for the 550ml version. Both items, the Swagman Roll and poncho, were neatly folded in their respective stuff sacks. When I removed the Swagman Roll it "ballooned" into a huge size and I worried that it would not go back into the stuff sack easily. I zipped it up into its sleeping bag configuration and shoved it back into the sack with ease. Thank you, sir, for the video and recommendation. Man, I think my bushcraft kit is complete!

A swagman was more of a hobo that walked the outback looking for work on sheep stations and farms. They carried a "Swag" sometimes known as a "Matilda" with all of their earthly possessions rolled up inside. A bit like a Confederate Soldier's Bedroll. The USMC's 1st Marine Division adopted the song "Waltzing Matilda" from its time spent in Australia during WW2. "Waltzing a Matilda" is basically slang for a swagman walking from property to property looking for itinerant work.

I am a 64 year old Type II diabetic and have guided fishing and hunting trips all over the northern Rockies. Diabetes can interfere with your body's ability to regulate its temperature. If I am exerting heavily or it is just plain hot out I sweat a lot more than a normal person. Getting your clothing wet in the outdoors can be deadly whether its from sweat or rain or a fall in a lake or stream, even if it is 80F out, even a slight breeze can bring on hypothermia. Modern "breathable fabrics" simply can't "breathe fast enough to keep me dry. I have long preferred a simple military poncho to keep rain and snow off my outerwear. without zippers and sleeves helping to keep the moisture in and with a good wicking base layer wool layers over that I get enough "breathing to keep dry. Not sure about insulating poncho liners. It's high latitude and high altitude so I never go into the woods, even in July, without the clothing I need to get through a day or two of sub zero temps. I imagine that farther south and farther downhill, and insulating liner is lightweight and handy to carry. Up here, there are just things you dare not leave at home any time of year and that means weight. More than many survival environments the first two elements of "survival" are 1) Lungs 2) Legs IN '72 USAF taught us "survival" was first about PLanning, Practice with Focus, and Discipline in Execution, all supported by the OODA loop cognitive process. Observe-Orient-Decide-Act. SINgle "loops may be nan seconds long in a fight or hours long in a survival situation. What matters is that you remain inside the loop. Discipline = calm and calm= excellence in execution. You might have to do something danged fast but you will do it in a clam focused way. "Survival" begins long before you leave the house and it is GREAT to see folks like the Corporal and GBGB bringing content to KZbin that facilitates all phases of survival. Even if you are out camping in an RV or a trailer, you can break out some of your survival gear and start your evening Beer Fire with some punk rock & metal (see that clever musical reference) instead of dousing it with charcoal lighter fluid. Thanks Corporal! As you were people.....

Awesome review and product. I did happen to see one very minor con to the swagman roll poncho, i noticed when you did the water test the zipper fabric got rather dark/wet quickly, i fear that in heavy rain you might find yourself with a pocket filling with water. this can be good or bad dependong on what items you may have in there at the time. This is by no means a bash to the swagman roll, it's just a smiple observation. I believe a zipper lip/cover like they put on tents/tentflys would rectify this. Once again Corporal great review i would highly consider getting both products in conjunction for myself.

The problem with the coat configuration is that is it severely limits arm movement, so you can't save yourself from a fall or do any camp tasks etc. I have a modified woobie with a poncho slit for my head to go through. I also added some press studs along the long edges. I bring the long edged together down the centre which leaves another head slit at crossing the one in the middle. So this is now a 1/2 width double layer strip with each laying having the head slits crossing each other so there is at least 1 layer right around the neck with no gaps. When you put this on, it is worn as a tabard. Put a belt around so the 4 layers all overlap at the sides of the waist. This closes the arm hole but permits full and unrestricted arm movement because the garment only extends a few inched further beyond the shoulder. For wet weather, I use and ordinary rain jacket and a heavy duty garbage bag with the bottom cut out wo form a skirt that covers the lower part of the tabard. This also keeps most of my trousers dry as well. I think it's a better arrangement for freedom of movement but obviously not going to cope with immersion. But then, if you fell in the water wearing your poncho, I doubt you would be able to swim at all well, you may well drown trying to get it off to enable swimming. Interesting product though, I wasn't aware of it at all till today.

One helluva system, I love the woodland version, I have a USGI M81 poncho, I wouldn't mind getting the swag man roll in the same pattern.

I like the swagman...great waterproof demo....plenty of pocket space...not so great looking as a jacket (from behind), but it doesn't matter if it is raining!! Thanks sir.

The Swagman Ranger Roll. Love it. Loved it so much I bought an extra one for domestic applications. However, my wife doesn't love it so much when I use it for the bedroom. Semper Fi my fellow Belleau Woodsman!!

The problem with DWR is that it'll wear off sooner or later, either that or you'll need to wash it, and then you have to re-apply it yourself. I don't know if it's just me but that just never seems to work nearly as well as the factory appliction and by the time you actually end up in a prolonged downpour it's gone or half gone and you end up soaked anyway. So nice in that it'll keep you dry in the odd shower but make sure to put on your actual poncho when the rain actually hits.

I was researching the poncho to replace my heavy current option thought I was halving the weight then I seen how good the swagman roll attachment is. Now I need to adjust a few things to compensate the extra weight. Thanks great review

Swagman is probably the best thing iv'e bought in my life.I'm using it several times a year mostly as a underquilt(tho im using it as a blanket and a poncho aswell) as me and my crew are sleeping in hammocs.I got both versions of it,basic one is still very good piece of gear but much cheaper.

@@goldenhealer5645 go to Helikon's web site. it's 93 euroes. add it to your cart. I got some other stuff. they add some postage because it's coming from Poland but I like the Poles because they are keeping the faith as Catholics and telling The Israelis to shove it as they should. some Poles stole a German tank and used it to liberate Jews from. camp. no one was better to the Jews during the war. trouble is they are an ungrateful lot.
