I’m still astonished that they developed this thing, built an entire keynote presentation and videos to promote it, etc., and nobody seemed to realize just how shocked and horrified people would be at it.

There was no way I would load an OS with a built-in super-spyware despite their assurance “but it’s turned off”.

I’m not astonished. Is part of the MO. They rather ask for forgiveness than ask for honest opinion.

This is also the first time their spying and prying has become visible. People were okay with it as long as they didn't have to deal with it... now it's visible and, surprise, people reacted.

Well, maybe the new Redmond kids running these product events might have used ChatGPT to set up the stage content and presentations. You never know when it comes to Redmond (full disclosure I worked on Campus for 15 years, happily retired now!)

It's about time we face a couple of nasty facts... 1) Microsoft is so far off the rails they aren't even considering their customers anymore. 2) The people behind this Recall debacle obviously didn't think it through. 3) Nobody is thinking about what people actually use computers for. There is a movie, "The Circle", in which every bright idea is tossed around in a board room, big business deciding life for everyone else... the end result is that one of the team's boyfriend is killed by one of her big ideas... It gets worse, people visible online 24/7, election tampering, and a bunch of other stuff until (spoiler alert) someone blows the whistle. On it's surface this movie is some interesting drama, depicting what is possible without concern for consequences ... but on it's deeper plane it is a movie warning about the danger of getting too smug; showing us just what happens when we get a big idea then immediately turn our brains off. Microsoft has their brains turned off.

This is like anything in life, like the first time someone broke the 4-minute mile run. Once someone has proven it can be done, the rest follows. Now that Redmond has shown they did it, and 'enabled all the hooks (system calls) into Windows Core' to enable Recall, the odds are there is already someone out there right now who will find everything they'll need in Windows Core to build and deploy their own 'Recall surveillance' spyware.

Microsoft needs to hire at least one normal computer enthusiast to vet their ideas and weed out the stupidest ones.

Maybe they could be given a version of the operating system that is special to them. Let’s give it a special name… like a “Beta Channel”.

Long-term solution: Do not buy computers sporting a keyboard that M$ had the audacity to change and add malicious buttons for their own ends that were never meant to be there in the first place. Like they couldn't have repurposed F12 for their evil agenda. Do they really think people need to hit that button as often as the letters of the alphabet? 🧐
