In the script for HPD it was made clear that the stranger was the murdered Sheriff's brother. Eastwood said to leave that out of the movie, leaving who/what the stranger was up to speculation

Not bad for a recap but some important info was left out. Also i wish we could hear Megan reading the pale horse part from The Revelations, thats one of the single greatest moments in cinema history. As a very tolerant but conservative Christian this movie speaks to me, God is not there to help us directly but to ease the right people into the right place when they are needed, our job is to be one of the right people.

Pale Rider and High Plains Drifter have the same type of character. In both cases Clint Eastwood plays the part of a dead man that returns to settle a score. In both movies Clint makes a statement that lets everyone know that he is an avenging spirit, a dead man returning to enact vengeance for his murder.

Not a white horse, a pale horse as in the four horsemen of the apocalypse, the book of Revelation chapter 6, ",and behold a pale horse. And his name sat on him was death,and hell followed with him." I believe that was the symbolism they were referencing in his mysterious appearance & subsequent actions towards the end of the film.
