I think your assessment of Dylan's reclusive character is probably spot on, James. I don't think any of us "regular folks" could ever comprehend what he's been through, good and bad. Anyway, like you, it's been 20-25 years since I've read any biographical or analytical book on Dylan, but I did read very many of them long ago, including the Sounes and Heylin books. I thought they were OK, and like you said, they are more informative than enjoyable from a literary perspective. Honestly, I long ago decided that his lyrics provided me with far more insight and literary enjoyment than any biographical or analytical book I've ever read about him.

Thanks James - I read the original edition of the Dylan book when it first came out. I enjoyed it and your video has tempted me into getting the updated version! Take care.

As you know, a huge RH fan saw him a few months back and posted some concert footage. I will have to pick it up. Cheers, James.

Great video James. I’ll read that 1967 book for sure.

Thanks Matthew, it is an enjoyable book though very brief.

The Dylan book has been on my list for a while so thanks for the review. Hard to find something definitive on him - besides Chronicles, I suppose! Sounes also has a decent bio on Lou Reed. Quite hard on the subject but rings true!

I'll put 1967 on my 'to read' list.

OK! Just remember my caveats about it...it's a bit frustrating in its brevity!

@@jamesgriffithsmusic maybe he'll do a sequel titled 1968 some day😁

I've read a couple of Dylan books over the years, always worth reading about his life and career. Robyn Hitchcock is an artist I've known about for decades but know virtually nothing about him, so that book looks to be an intriguing read James.

I think you'd like Robyn Hitchcock...I'd even venture to say he's tangentially linked to Roy Harper in what he does, though with a slightly different angle. Definitely rooted in acid-folky kind of things, with Syd Barrett and Dylan being the two biggest influences probably. Thanks Rob.

I just started a book by one of my favorite historians, Michael Wood from the UK. He is examining the history and myths from the early days of Britain. I like the way he writes. His look at the Trojan War that he did years ago was fantastic.

Thanks Steve. Sounds interesting, don't think I've heard of Michael Wood. There's a very good British historian called Simon Schama who has done some great books and TV shows on the history of Britain.

Remember when you and your mates would talk about new music you enjoyed and were excited about, I expect it was much the same into our generation - I wonder if the kids nowadays still have that connection or if it is gotten less significant in their lives. Doesn't seem to mean much to my kids save for background in their videos or games etc. I can imagine the amount of detail to include in a Dylan biography to be truly massive and intimidating to shape into narrative form. He seems a very aloof, enigmatic and unknowable individual from what I've heard. Cheers James!

Can totally relate to your point about music in video games..both my sons have been exposed to all sorts of music over the years via the games they play, but I honestly don't think either of them have paid any attention to it! Yes, Dylan is definitely a strange human being; the again, he's led a very strange life. Thanks Doug!

I didn't know they were still married during those albums, either. That makes it SO much weirder!
