@@thewriter2549 Thanks Jerry. Bob is such a smart guy. I hope there is some apprentice learning everything he knows, I am sure he will want to retire someday but these Mustangs will still need Gate Keepers. I like that he is keeping people honest so that some unsuspecting person doesn’t get taken later. I wonder if he can help the auction houses verify the big ticket cars that come through there too? That would be a great way to protect the buyers as well and help keep the cars honest.

There was a 1969 Boss429 sold at Dunlop Ford , Lethbridge Alberta ( only one ever came to the dealership that I knew of ) sat in the show room floor for the longest time before it sold ... guy buys it , probably late ‘69 and almost immediately blows the engine , might have been a head gasket . Car was still under warranty ... mechanics tore the engine down got freaked out when they took the heads off and found all the o rings ... so they ordered a complete “crate” engine ... took almost a year to get , so by now it’s late 1970 ... what arrives in the crate is a Boss302 ! Customer is pissed , they take the car back , guy buys a 1971 Torino 428 CJ 4speed car The Boss sits around until 1974 before someone finally buys it ... I think it ended up in Montana and got a replacement Boss429 engine .

Lima Engine number unique to Boss '9s. Besides possible VINS, factory assembly dates can be found stamped on many engines. i.e. On front of block near where water pump bolts on Windsor V-8's, On block pan rails for many Clevelands, etc. Look carefully, you'll most likely find the die stamp date on yours...

Well, this is up to interpretation. They still are mass-produced cars with humans doing the work 50+ years ago. So when someone stamps the wrong number or reads it incorrectly, and or flips the stamp 6 to 9 or someother crazy thing. Lots of weird things happened back then. Remember, this was not designed to be verifiable information for colectors in the future.

Bob is a Ford lover's treasure and guru, yet I cannot believe that he would say "VIN number", knowing that the 'N' in 'VIN' IS 'Number'. It's like saying "Vehicle Identification Number Number". Sounds pretty silly, doesn't it?
@thewriter25492 ай бұрын
No, "VIN number" doesn't sound silly because that's common nomenclature among people in the car collecting hobby. Car people just say it that way. I think the reason they say it that way is to denote they are referring to the stamping itself on the car, not just the number.

@melvinsmiley5296 suggests digitising and I agree. Although these paper records almost went in the bin, had they been computerised records, then some 'unknown clerk' would simply have hit the delete button with no chance of human intervention or the whole disk would have been corrupted and binned. We stand less chance in the future with computer records than we do with the old fashioned paper ones. What a series of strokes of luck!
