Watched this a while ago. Now watched it again. Love the story. The restraint in keeping it as original as possible. And the transparency in the costs.

Thanks because that's exactly my feeling and what I tried very hard to show everybody. You get it. I've done over 800 of these barn finds in the magazines in my column "Rare Finds" and I always pushed for somebody to do a restoration like this, where they left some of the history of the car. I always wanted for somebody to be so honest they revealed what they paid and they paid a fair price, somebody that laid out the costs for us, which Bob did in the follow up video on restoring this Shelby. He is amazing and a very rare individual.

Shame that a beautiful car was "customized" like this.
@thewriter2549
@thewriter2549 Күн бұрын
This car was customized in the late 1950s and is a window into the custom car era of the late 1940s to the mid-1960s, when that era ended. So, it is historically significant, especially having its original custom paint. Many people like these customs. I like original better, too, but as a historian this car is intriguing to look at, especially since it is a time capsule with its original paint and custom features. So many of the customs just kept getting customized through the years and lost their vintage custom look.

That's the problem with unfortunate people like myself versus the luck of some people that already have a good life, here's my story I saw a car for sale it was a 1967 Camaro baby Blue with all white interior leather seats mint condition perfect paint job inside and out including all the stuff people miss and I was not making enough money it was only $3,500 but I did not have that kind of money he said some college kid left it in his barn and never picked it up for 20 years so if I would have bought that and kept it in my garage for the next 20 years which is now then I would have sold that car for 53,000 as it's a 1967 mint Camaro or it was a 1970 mint condition Nova they look like Camaros but I pretty much believe it was a Camaro the luck of some are better and good for them but the lack of unfortunate usually come across those deals all the time and can't afford to buy them

Started working in Body shops my Senior years in HS...75/76... 1st car a 67 Impala, 2nd car a 68 Chevelle, 3rd a 72 El Camino... that got me in trouble while in the Air Force for to many speeding tickets... (it would do 150 mph easy)... I could out run the cops... I couldn't out run their radio's... At one point I owned one of the first 100 - 55 Chevy Belair's to roll off the assembly line... didn't know that at the time... Had to get rid of it going into an ugly divorce!!! Worked on a ton of different vehiles as a hoby... worked up to putting paint jobs on helicopters.. Retired now and a 100% Service Connected Disabled Vet... As we speak right now I'm doing a frame off restoration on an all original 1993 Harley Davidson 883 Sportster with 6,000 original miles... It's been sitting up for 17 years now... and every single piece of chrome is rusted beyong belief... With all this said about me... LoL.. a question if I may... Jason keeps referring to "Concourse"... quality... I absolutey agree on the quality of work he's putting out on your car... But would it still be considered "Concourse"... if it's not number's matching??? Am I correct in saying, that you don't have the "original engine, transmission, or rear end"... So therefore it won't ever be a true, "original" numbers matching car??? Does Concourse shows, allow for that??? Do they have a catagory that would include your 500GT??? Don't get me wrong... I'm a big time chevy guy... but this Mustang, and it's story is cool on every level... Thanks for y'all's hard work, and for sharing it with us!!!

To ask if there is a category for my car doesn't make sense. This is an original 1967 Shelby GT-500 with a history naming every owner back to the original owner and listed in the Shelby Registry. The "matching" part is the Ford VIN that cross references to the Shelby VIN on the Shelby plate in the Ford data base. We found a date-coded correct engine. The engines in these Shelbys were not stamped with the car's VIN, so there is nothing to match. What you do is simply buy an engine with a date-coded correct block, which we did. Same for everything on the engine.The rear end turned out to be original. The VIN is stamped on the bottom of the transmission. We don't have that, but bought an original 4-speed. This is an original 1967 Shelby. It is judged as a restored original.

He clearly loves his work, I am not a fan of blasting, I believe that dipping does a better job getting between the joined panels to clear out all facets of corrosion that blasting cannot

A good subject to kick around. I did the first undercarriage detailing article many years ago. Chemical stripping will take away the factory markings, which I noticed Bob Perkins is calling "witness marks" these days. So, dipping is really washing away all that history. Also, what does dipping do to the original seam sealer?And isn't there the worry of the liquid remaining trapped in cracks an crevices that might leak out later after the car is painted?
