Join pediatric speech-language pathologist Laura Mize, M.S., CCC-SLP of teachmetotalk.com for this podcast for CE credit for therapists as we examine receptive language development for very young children with autism or red flags for autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Do kids with autism learn language differently than kids with other kinds of language delays? When do we prioritize receptive language goals with children with ASD? What are activities we can recommend for parents to do at home to work on improving their own child's ability to understand language? Find out the answers to these common questions (and more!) in this podcast episode in The Autism Podcast Series. Therapists - get 1hour CE credit for only $5. I’ve watched this twice so far, can’t tell you how much we needed to hear this. It’s as if a lightbulb turned on and it became clear what we as a family needed to do. Thank you so much!!

Hello, I just found your channel recently as I was doing research to help my 5 yr old daughter who has expressive and receptive language disorder and a ASD diagnoses. She does go to speech therapy but as a mom I want to learn independently the ways in which I can help improve my daughters language development and not rely on just the therapy services to make a difference in her life. I just want to thank you for creating this channel because it is an essential tool for parents who want to learn to teach their children but don't have the educational background but the desire to learn the needed skills for developing language. God Bless You! 💜 Video suggestion: Some suggestions on helping your love one transition off screen time and not feel lost would be helpful. My daughter doesn't seem to know what to do with herself when I started taking away screen time. So I decided to do it in interval time slots of 45 min to an hour to make it a little more doable for her starting out.

Thanks so much. The number 1 recommendation is eliminating screen time/electronics. There is new research on virtual autism, folks try and check it out.

You mention keeping the child with the parent as much as possible, but what about an ASD child that won't sit still and needs containment? Any good suggestions?

Hi Katie - When a toddler with any diagnosis (ASD included!) is moving around a lot, I always think his little sensory system needs it so we should try to build movement into our language activities AND help them learn to want to stay with you vs. running away. The best way to do that is with social games geared toward their sensory preferences. Listen for those ideas in #403 Teach Social Games First or read about it in The Autism Workbook available at my website at teachmetotalk.com. Email me anytime with more specific questions/recommendations at Laura@teachmetotalk.com. Thanks for your question! Laura

Thank you for all of the information, as always! I tried emailing a question to you a few months ago, but I’m sure you get inundated! I wanted to find the research/information re: keeping your child next to you at all times. I scoured the Internet and couldn’t find anything🤷🏻‍♀️ Wanted something to hand to parents about it. If anyone has any resources I’d greatly appreciate it:) Thank you!
