this is by far the best / most descrptive video i have seen. good tip to check the clearance for the housing. in my case I do not have a ceiling fan, so I need to locate where to draw power from. any tips on that. I do have a power outlet controller by a switch next to door. can you suggest how I can use that

If you have an existing switch you need to find a way to get your romex from one of can lights to the switch or tie into the wire wherever it does. What does the switch next to the door control? Does it go to an outlet or does it turn on a light fixture?

Does the ground wire from the replacement light have to be grounded?

yeah they weren't around when I did that install if they were I probably would have returned the lights I had and just kept going with the install and put in the slim ones

good job but I really wish that you would've shown step by step you actually wiring the lights to the fan. I'm thinking about installing my recessed lights myself but all of the videos I've seen no one ever shows the steps of wiring the lights to the power source. the rest of the installation seems pretty straight forward but with me not being an electrician i'm really needing that step.

Hi Marcus, you make a good point in that I didnt go over that in detail. Here is what I did: 1. Remove shroud from fan (expose wires going from ceiling to fan). 2. Find out which wire in the ceiling fan is controlled by the light switch. I did this by testing the various wires going to the fan with a voltage tester. Leaving the switch that turns the fan light in the on position and the fan switch off I was able to identify which wire had current to it. I labeled that wire with tape. (see 12:33 spot in the video) 3. Turned off power at the breaker box of the circuit which powers the fan. 4. Fished the new electrical wire (14/2 romex) from the new canned lights into the junction box where the fan wiring resides. 5. Stripped off shielding on white (nuetral) and black wires to about 3/4 of an inch. 6. Removed existing wire nuts to the bundle of white wires and added the white wire to the bundle by twisting on a larger wire nut. Then added the black wire to the wires with the tape and replaced smaller wire nut with larger nut. 7. Removed wire nut with the green wires (ground) and pushed the bare wire in with the others and put on a larger wire nut. 8. Tuned on power to test that the light switch on the wall did in fact turn on the fan light AND the canned lights. Turned off and on the switch controlling the fan to confirm it operated as it should. 9. Replaced the shroud and proceeded with the rest of the project. Hope this helps, maybe I will get around to making a video about this?

Agreed. The wiring is very scary/hard for non electrician. This video was great nonetheless, but nothing on KZbin with what we are looking for!
