I did this course as I way to change my career into project management. I got an entry level job as a project coordinator before I even finished the course. It helped me have basic knowledge for the interviews where I was asked to give a presentation on how to plan a new small project. I wouldn't have been able to get this job without this course. Some parts are better than others, but I strongly recommend it

There are a bunch of different groups that offer various different project management "certifications." Most of them are pretty worthless and just resume fodder. If they're very fast and require a weekend of your time and no prior experience then their value to a hiring manager is likely similarly shallow. The CAPM, despite coming from PMI, isn't really all that valuable. However, if you have literally nothing with "project management" on your resume it's a great place to start. So in that respect CAPM is a worth-while investment since it requires little more than a high school diploma, a couple hundred bucks and some study time. But hopefully it's the type of certification you earn and never recertify because you move on up to the full PMP (also from PMI). The PMP has long been the gold standard and that should be your goal. Only acquire enough of the these minor certifications to get you that first job or two and get to the PMP as quickly as possible. After you have the PMP nothing else is really supremely consequential or helpful unless you're looking at specialized certifications within project management. But as a general, all purpose certification, the PMP is pretty much it.

For me, it's at least partly about exploring a different job area from what I'm doing, feeling like I'm a bit stalled in career growth, and that my skill set is already pretty transferable for PM roles (I manage an online community at Microsoft and do already have a four year degree). I had all my notes from the course in place, so I studied them right before my interview, making it so that any questions they asked, I had extremely in-depth answers to. It's a great cert especially if you have no experience tbh but If you're responsible, somewhat organized, self starting, attentive w/foresight, inquisitive, planner and can communicate well with people plus keep a cool head this may interest you. All the terms and stuff will come in time from studying and going for certs. You're pretty much the main cog in a machine, but I think experience goes a long way due to working/coordinating with different people who pretty much will have an expectancy of reliance on you due to your position respectfully.

For me, it was worth it, as I did not have to pay (part of an unemployment plan), and wanted to explore this path. The course touched on theories but in my opinion, gives you hands on/step-by-step practices at the different life cycle stages. In the end, they offered discounts to seat for both CAPM and PMS-1, access to the Coursera job platform, 1 year of another platform that provides lessons and practices to different levels of interviews… I am not sure they will continue with these offerings, but since I did not hear about it in the video, decided to share. Im currently on the last course of GPM on coursera. At the moment i work security in the receiving department, which means i deal with a lot of things most other security officers dont. it was a learning experience but after going through the course it has completely changed my work experience (and generally my life). I will say one thing she misses out on is, if you can grind the courses away, you can technically finish in half the time, or just faster than six months. the other thing is, and i dont recall where i noticed it, but at PMI the GPM certification actually qualifies as a prerequisite for one of the certification exams.

I have a PMP and recently changed PM jobs. I will say that unless you are entry level I would caution anyone doing this right now. If you look at job postings for PMs they don't ask for this certificate as required or preferred but the do ask for the PMI credentials. So unless companies start asking for this certificate on job postings or if Google has a track record about helping applicants out it feels like a money grab. I am curious if anyone has completed this and received a PM role due to this certificate.
@RecipeforSuccess1

Hi Alan - you and I arrived at a similar conclusion (which I pointed out in this video): there isn't any current stats to prove an ROI and I also couldn't find any job roles that listed this as a qualification. That being said, for individuals who are able to take this course for free or want a low-cost option to learn about PM (and have the cash to spare!) this might be a good solution. Hopefully, a viewer will be able to circle back with us and let us know their outcomes post-graduation!

Hi Saksham - I like this strategy! If I were you, I would look into a few training options for CAPM and compare prices/courses. Currently, It looks like the Google Course qualifies for the education hours for the CAPM and seems like it would be a reasonably priced option. I would also double check with PMI that they will accept those education hours and make sure to read through PMBOK. For full transparency, I haven't personally done this, so I can't say with 100% certainty that it'll get you through your CAPM, but it seems reasonable to try this approach. I hope that helps!

Hi Edson! Thanks for the positive feedback - I hope this was helpful for you! Are you interested in project management or general management? If PM, this would be a low cost way of learning about project management methodology (i.e. $39.99/month) as long as you're comfortable spending that money without a guaranteed ROI/PM job. This could also help you decide if you like project management or not. If you ultimately are more interested in a PM job, given your experience, I would just start applying for project management roles and see if you get called in for interviews. Good luck with your future endeavors!

You gotta be careful, 'cause if this Google Certification is based on PMI Guidelines, PMBok changed to the new version (Version 7) just like a week ago, so it will change the content (a few or a lot, I don't even know) and also the way companies will see this kind of "Certification". Besides this, if PMbok is recently released doing a CAPM exam could be quite different comparing the new version with the old one.

Hi Stephanie - In my experience, I've always needed to be comfortable speaking a LOT to those above me and to my team. I lead meetings, do software demos (as needed), and provide lots of executive level status updates - so I would say if public speaking is a concern, consider some courses on it? Or opportunities in your current role to practice?

Hi Rayenn - To clarify, Google says that their intention is to have the certification be an equivalency for a 4 year degree. As for the CAPM, you will need the education hours from an approved vendor either way. Google says that you'll get over 100 hours towards the CAPM/PMP here and that on average it costs less than $300: "Google is an approved member of the Project Management Institute’s Authorized Training Partner Program, which ensures practitioners have access to consistent and high-quality training experiences. Those who complete the Google Project Management Certificate will qualify for over 100 hours of project management education that apply directly to requirements for globally-recognized PMI credentials, like the Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM)® certification, at a discounted price." PMP certification is either a requirement or a ban, depending on where you go looking for work. Even if you don't fully meet the years of experience requirements I'd still apply. That's one of the first things hiring managers are likely to look past. ESPECIALLY with obvious entry level positions. Now, if the job is asking for 15 years in a specific field for a Sr. Lead Project Manager - yea, you're probably out of your depth. But if the job is asking for 2-3 years of experience then go ahead and submit your application. Because a lot of the people that already have 2-3 years of experience are applying for the jobs asking for 4-5 years of experience. Eventually somebody will bite on your application.

Buy yourself a black hardcover book and take notes of what you see on youtube and read in the comments. Writing things down is very powerful and therapeutic. 3. Good for you! What type of project management are you interested in?

Thanks much for throwing light on it. I was curious about it. So yes....then what's the point of doing it if teaches the same thing as PMI....develops its course content..in consultation with PMI etc etc.. Rather directly go for PMP instead.....and of course if one doesn't want just an 'add-on' sort of a certificate.

Hi Anand - Great question! I think there are a few different populations that the certification might be a good fit for: 1. If you don't have a bachelors and want to get into project management 2. If you're looking for an informational course (this is a reasonable cost for an actual course compared to what you would pay for the PMP test alone) 3. Those who want to learn about project management without committing too much money (ex. those looking to change industries, those in roles who could use some PM expertise but perhaps not a full on certification) 4. If you are already a PM, it seems like a cheap way to get the education hours required for the PMP. However if you already qualify for the PMP and are in-between the two, I would probably suggest the PMP personally. :)
