If you're contemplating a PMP certification, you're already a high-performing individual who aims for continual personal & professional improvement (only the most motivated of us will better ourselves through training/education). YES - the PMP qualifies your experience as a project manager to those who don't know you or your work history. The certification definitely opens doors, and will lead to a MUCH HIGHER income in the years to come. Get it done! Best of luck.

I was Project Manager for over 15 years making great money without a PMP. I finally got it. What I realize is Larger Fortune 500 companies dont really care if you got it. They want someone who know their stuff. Going the Agile way by getting a Scrum Master or SAFe certification is the way. PMI change their curriculum because Scrum Alliance and SAFe were taking their customers. This message was to encourage you that you still can make 6 figures without a PMP. Its good to get one because some companies love it but not all.

I did my PMP few years ago. Since then, I have seen it open more doors for me - most PM roles say 'PMP preferred' -making it that much easier to get my resume picked up. After that what I got paid was mostly based on how I interviewed and negotiated. PMP certificate is another tool in the kit - it is up to you how you benefit from it.

Emma, this was a wonderful video, thank you. I have been a PM for 6 years now and hold the PMP, PMI-ACP, and PMI-RMP (along with two certifications from the Scaled Agile Framework and two from Scrum). Looking back, my PMP journey was a huge leap forward in my career because it allowed me to truly understand my profession from various perspectives. It also equipped me with the ability to work within any manner of PMO and to do so fully understanding all methods and frameworks. Another thing I will add is that I have never paid for my PDUs. I have used "giving back" (working in my function as a PM practitioner as well as volunteering for PMI), reading plenty of books on PM risk management, or attending PM chapter events. One should not have to spend a dime to fulfill PDUs. My next thing will be to write a white paper on a PM topic, and that activity also generates PDUs.

The best-paid PMPs have a solid technical background. In fact, they have worked in the tech industry in some capacity or another. It is so easy to gather requirements and at times to write the requirements without having to infringe upon the technical resources' time. I have been in the tech industry for 23 years, and I often find myself challenging techies as to what needs to be done and how long it will take to complete a task; speaking from personal technical experience. However, the quantifiers are important as well ie. Numbers. Most project managers only have a broad, shallow, technical understanding of what is actually happening behind the scenes. They also lack the ability to question the resources as to why they have met the deadline for any given deliverable. Best advice: Obtain at least one technical certification. Start with AZ series exams. Example AZ-900 (Microsoft Azure Fundamentals).

There are a lot of PMs in other industries as well. I work on aerospace/defense manufacturing and most PMPs in my industry don't come from a tech background at all. Mostly mechanical or engineering. I just got my PMP a week ago now I'm a little different in that I have my Masters so I got it to enhance my resume. That being said I will say its worth it not only for the knowledge but for the doors it opens. I live in the DMV (DC,VA,MD) area and there are tons of jobs that require it. Depending on what you want to do and whether you have a clearance or not will usually dictate salary. I would say it is well worth the journey although I will say that what you learn via PMI and what you do during your job may be different but the concepts will give you a solid understanding. One last thing, PMP does travel so it is recognized literally everywhere especially globally the only limitations are what you set for yourself.

I got my PMP a few years ago and here is some tips if you are scared of failing.... Study so long you are absolutely sick of studying, especially the areas you are the weakest. Find the junkiest test banks you can find. Challenge yourself and prove or disprove their answers with how PMI would view the correct answer. If you can get through junky questions, you will be better prepared for test taking strategies on real questions. And you will find real questions to be much easier. Do not memorize the formulas. Learn them through practice and understand why the formulas are the way they are. Understand what the solution means in an example. I passed with exceeds expectations on the first try. I had an hour of left before I turned it in. I don't say that to brag. I say all that because those are the strategies I used. They work! If I can do it, YOU CAN TOO! You don't need luck because you got this!

My experience is that most companies requiring a PMP have no idea what it means. They do not understand, for instance, that the organization has to be quite project mature or else they will look at the PM following the methodology like they have a third eye. I find I have to do a lot of teaching for my teams and stakeholders so they understand what I’m doing and why. I also know PMPs who really don’t know how to implement the framework. They get the theory, but it’s really not enough. I find PRINCE2 is better for tailoring the process to the type and size of project, and for the organization to understand the process.

I feel that PMP certification is just a way to get you into paying into the PMI organization over and over again. I do project management without PMP but I did take a semester course at a university. Now I'm looking at getting the Scrum Master cert.

My question is that if you finish the 35 hours of course materials, but fail the exam 3 times you cannot take the test again for another year. So I assume the 35 hours are gonna continue to be valid for a few years? I am asking because I'm a bad test taker.

I have an MS in Criminal Justice, a MBA w/PMP. I retire from Military service in 2 years. I plan on using my military experience to eliminate hours/experience as my MBA cover my 30 hour PMP educational training. This has been very helpful. I plan on getting my PMP certification prior to retirement. My only question: is the PMP certification stronger on a resume vs higher education? Subscribed and liked! Thank you for the content!

I'm wondering if pmp would benefit me. I'm a red seal machinist, millwright and 5th class power engineer (have my firing time for 4th class... but need a break from technical reading...) in Canada. I have 7 years of managing projects, so I meet the requirements to do the pmp. Would there be a benefit you think? My wife is doing pmp right now and it looks quite easy overall. Nothing too crazy and the topics are fairly easy to grasp overall. I'm wanting to be involved in larger scale projects as a decision maker, but I'd also like to be fairly hands on too.

This video reminded me once again of the daunting groundwork as well as dedicated practice you have to put before you sit for the 4-hr long instantly-known pass/fail result style of the PMP exam. $550 for just the exam in May 2021, hopefully I create time to start prepping to take it - That ROI seems defendable.

How is the criteria of “experience” vetted prior to starting PMP cert? I know a BA or 7,500 hours is the stat, so personally I have 8 years military experience, with a hard focus in logistics/PM/supply chain management, traveling and taking on hundreds of projects, leading people, organizing/streamlining plans, with six sigma yellow belt, do you think they’d consider that enough “experience”
@RecipeforSuccess1
@RecipeforSuccess1 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Devin - there's no formal vetting, you put your experience into your application to sit for the PMP. However PMI will randomly audit a percentage of applicants - so you'll want to make sure you can back up your experience! This happened to a manager of mine and he had to get all his old managers to sign off on his experience.

Recieved my PMP in November of 2019. No change in salary, responsibilities or business respect. Maybe if I changed jobs it would make a difference, but so far: nothing. Keeping it in my back pocket in case I need to change jobs. Been in my IT career (as Senior Technical Lead) for 22 years. Looking to get my ACP...because why not? Other employers may be looking for this to compliment my PMP credential.

@ppsayl123 could you share your experience? How difficult was filling out the application and where did you prepare for the test? I’m thinking about getting the PMP the beginning of 2022
@ppsayl1235
@ppsayl1235 3 жыл бұрын
@@betzandragarcia141 Before filling out the application (which can be somewhat involved), be sure you meet the criteria for having a degree or not. If you don't have a degree (I didn't), then you have to document all of your past and current project hours (no overlapping time frames) for each of the process groups. I created a spreadsheet to help me do this. Then, you have to the hours signed off by either a previous or current manager. Once you have that, you should start your application. Keep on mind that PMI randomly audits the applications, so accuracy is key. My friends application wss audited and it was a long process to have the document corrected, validated, reviewed and approved again. As I took the exam for PMBOK 6, I'm sure there have been some changes since then, but my primary advice is to read the pre-application literature thoroughly. I studied on my own, but used Cornelius Fitchner's mock test software to prepare me for the actual test questions. Highly recommended. The main book I used was PMP Head First (great reference book). Good luck in your studies!

Hey - that's a great point! I would love to see some data about PMPs and remote work! One thing I did find from PMI in their 2021 pulse of the profession is about gymnastic enterprises and the impact to projects. They talk about how gymnastic enterprises are more successful because they focus on their people & talent. I wonder if WFM is a critical aspect of that??

At no point in 25+ years of Project and program management across UK, EU, Middle East and Asia Pacific have I ever seen a position requesting PMP, Agile or Prince2 qualifications earn a quantifiable amount over a position not specifically requesting one of the major recognised certifications. Positions typically state Degree, PM certification or relevant experience. Contract roles state day or hourly rates and where no salary information is provided, and I have interviewed for a role and I have asked the remuneration, there's been no additional benefit to having any certification. Relevant experience was more key to negotiating higher. Unless PMI published their figures that prove out their claim, I conclude it's to reinforce something they want you to have but actually don't need to succeed as a project manager.
