The driving instructor in this episode was played by, Larry Storch, died in his sleep at 99 years old.. [01/08/1923-07/08/2022] R.I.P. ………… He was a popular comedic character actor who also did voiceover work and impressions and was best known for his role as Corporal Randolph Agarn on “F Troop." He died in his sleep yesterday, at 99 years old. Larry Storch was a familiar face on TV shows throughout the 1960s and ’70s. Along with being Corporal Again on "F Troop", he also he starred in the 1970s children’s show “The Ghost Busters” and appeared on “The Love Boat” and “Car 54, Where Are You?” On “Married… With Children,” he played Al Bundy’s childhood hero who owned an acting school. His other TV roles included “I Dream of Jeannie,” “That Girl,” “Fantasy Island,” “Columbo,” “Mannix,” “Get Smart,” “Gilligan’s Island” and “Love, American Style.”

I'm sure everyone can identify with the Drivers Licence lessons, the Instructors along with the instructees. Beautifully portrayed by Larry Storch. The nervosity was catching. I was actually relieved when Columbo stopped the car and Larry Storch escaped. ("Alighted" would have been a too genteel discription.)

See, here Columbo thinks the instructor is funny, not himself: his quirks are ingrained and real--he just REALLY doesn't care about appearances, just the job. And that's why he's never really awed are envious of all the swells he brings down--all their stuff and show mean nothing to him. His idea of class is the broken down Peugeot. But in the second incarnation of the series, Columbo is self-aware. He knows he's a character; he's playing at being the absent minded detective. It shows. It takes away a lot from the performance

*Mrs Columbo* A confession, my friends: my husband's favorite episode (can you guess which? - he publicly revealed it) is one that I have never ranked among mine. Not even in my top 10. Another confession: unlike the man on screen, F was a notorious womanizer. Though the Loo appeared devoted to me - as he would fondly refer to me in almost every episode - he chased women like we breathe air. This, too, was widely known and elaborated upon in detail in his biographies. An unrivaled actor, but a man with many, MANY personal, real-life faults.
