Reckoning with Masculinity: James Rose and Jun Nakamura in Conversation

How have ideas of masculinity, gender, and sexuality been constructed and depicted in different times and places, and what can we learn by reconsidering historical works dealing with these themes today? Jun P. Nakamura presents about how these ideas are addressed in the images of brawny musclemen on view in "Macho Men: Hypermasculinity in Dutch & American Prints." Philadelphia artist James Rose discusses how those same themes relate to his own art practice, and how he reckons with how he and his body are seen and understood in works such as "Null" and "Void," two large drawings recently acquired by the museum and on view in a gallery adjacent to "Macho Men."
