Wow it's super exciting to see your process on an overpaint. Taking an already existing motive is good to focus solely on the craft of coloring i think. Sometimes i get overwhelmed with a piece where i have to think about composition, colors, lighing ect all at the same time. I start off with just a super loose sketch most of the time. Maybe i should put more time into the research part before storming into the painting bit xD

You're most welcome Jorge! For general reference of things like water, or animals etc I just use google image search. But for cinematic lighting reference I like shotdeck.com/ and I also have been collecting images in a pinterest board for years too that you can find here if you like www.pinterest.com/jeremyvickery/amazinglight/

Did you color the whole painting on 1 layer? How is that different than coloring on multiple layers? I'm asking, because I notice different artists choose different ways to paint, but never really say why they do it like that.

For simple paintings like this, yes I stayed all on one layer. I will sometimes use multiple layers, but often find I can get lost in the tools and end up managing too many layers, so instead I try to keep is very simple and more similar to traditional oil painting
