For the past two years, my art has hit a block. I'm not god-tier by any means, so I knew there were things I could improve, but nothing I tried produced tangible results. This age's accessibility of teaching resources makes self-learning easier than ever and yet paradoxically harder *because* it's so easy. One keyword pulls up ten thousand results, and while more than half may have merit to varying degrees, most only show the creator's process of using their tools and workflows. Two years I spent watching tutorials on "best way to do this artistic thing" when what I really needed was "how to understand WHY we do this artistic thing". That is exactly what your videos offer. I have learned more from watching a scant three of your videos than I have in years of searching for answers. Your video on color relativity blew my mind and I immediately understood why my landscapes feel flat - I would see those purple and green hues faded by the atmosphere and literally paint with desaturated purple and greens. OF COURSE it looked wrong and now I know WHY! It's beyond inspiring to feel this renewed creative liberty. Last night, I did a number of color studies that were massively better than anything I've produced before, and now after watching this video, I'm itching to do light studies and endeavor to unsee the details! :3 The words feel too simple, but there's nothing more honest I can say than this. THANK YOU. Thank you for making these videos and answering the why's and not just the how's. Your content is literally the embodiment of the "teach a man to fish" proverb because you've made a lasting difference in how I see the world artistically instead of just feeding me on how to use a tool. Thank you so much and never stop painting or teaching, because you truly have a gift.
@markthomas1542 жыл бұрын
Jeremy, this kind of content is gold. It's very articulate and beautifully concise. In my opinion, to have the discipline as you go forward to keep presenting this kind of elemental thinking divorced from content about how to use 'the tools' is really important - learning how to think is more valuable than learning how to do. Once you understand the problem, and know how to think about it, building your own experiences, using creative problem solving and lateral thinking can get you over the 'how do I achieve this' line. How to do, then, can look like all manner of things. I don't do this kind of art, but I use exactly this kind of thinking in my approach to graphic design and communication. Look forward to hearing more from you…

I can't think of a better way to say this. I only started doing art about 6 years ago (48 yo now), and one of things I eventually picked up on was the necessity to see things differently. It is so, so, so important...at least for realism. Well said!

I think an important tip is to unsee bright colors, usually, when I started painting digitally I used very distinct and bright colors, but I have started to realize that starting with very desaturated colors and then working towards bright colors really makes the art pop.

YES! I have found the same thing. There is magic in the desaturated colors. I have a whole video planned on the topic for sure. Glad to know you have found the same revelation :)

In general I hate wearing glasses and use contacts, but sometimes I enjoy wearing my glasses when I go out or am looking to see differently for a bit, because I can take them off and I naturally see everything with that blur filter :) get rid of the details in the world and just see blobs of moving color (I have very bad vision lol). I find it pretty relaxing and magical, especially around Christmas time with all the string lights and decorations ✨
@LightingMentor2 жыл бұрын
Yes!! I totally agree! There are silver linings to having vision issues like this for sure. Interestingly enough many of my favorite Art Directors I've worked with through the years have lazy eyes or super thick glasses. Makes me wonder if they are able to see the world as 2d easier than with perfect vision and that gives them an advantage in creating art
@DawnDavidson2 жыл бұрын
I absolutely adore getting my vision checked around the holidays. The drops they put in to widen the pupils cause these gorgeous star shapes around all the street lamps and stoplights. :) I agree entirely that taking off my glasses will give me an entirely different view of the world, in just a moment. It’s magic! :)
@randomdm Жыл бұрын
Thanks, I needed to read this. That's the most positive thing I've ever heard in regards to having to have my newly acquired glasses. It was also like a penny drop moment, you are so right. What I had thought was incredible artistic instinct in some of my creative friends may well boil down to their very thick glasses & their ability to see the world in this fuzzy, diffused way. Amazing.
@margomaybe7570 Жыл бұрын
@@randomdm I'm sure it's a bit of both. Kids with poor vision/glasses are probably less comfortable running around outside all the time and therefore develop more indoor hobbies like reading/art/music. Or whatever a persons reasoning is for the behavior preferences they have. And the more time you spend indoors looking at close objects, the worse your vision will likely get (also genetics). I don't know if it's necessarily that we see in a way others don't, but that we've spent more conscious energy in the process of seeing and developing our other senses. So it's reciprocal, like most things. Near sightedness might have lead us to more near sighted skills, and then spending so much time doing those things made our nearsightedness worse. People on average have significantly worse vision today because of all our screens and nearsighted jobs.

This one is encouraging too, the fact the you start out in large scale and then refine more and more is how I Photoshop images - I do global things first, then after a while I spend more time dealing with more and more specific areas. I take a lot of time making sure I have textures right (which could involve accentuating actual light to be brighter or less bright, more saturation or less or changing color, some is for sharpening or blurring, etc. But in the end I do what looks good to me. I have spent as much as 10 days on a single picture, but usually one to two days are the norm. The more important a picture is to me, the more time I'm willing to spend. My record holder is of a super gifted and very kind celebrity who passed away suddenly. Everybody has heard of this person. I'd rather not say who. Anyway, I've said enough. Thanks for this excellent video. I'm still learning!

I have been painting for many years and have had many workshop and class teachers. Your approach to creating images using light (as opposed to form) as the primary principle is extremely useful and unique in my experience. I have always taught my own students that painting is first and foremost about seeing, and that you need to paint what you see, not what you think. After a certain point you will have learned enough to make aesthetic decisions that deviate from that rule, but only when you have understood why you are doing it. Your videos are pure gold.

I take pictures and I have always wondered why "photography" means "writing with light." I stumbled upon the works of an impressionist painter, Claude Monet, where he constantly paint similar subjects in different times of the day. I tried to do it as well but in photography. The more I practice it, the more I see how light hits the surfaces of the subjects, how light creates shadows behind a subject, how light makes the colors of subjects more vibrant, etc. You have explained this beautifully. I have watched a lot of art-related videos on KZbin and yours are one of the few ones that provide honest yet encouraging advice to people who want to try and excel in art. You earned a sub!!!

Thank you so much for making this video. I am legally blind. I have been an artist all my life and I started losing my eyesight 10 years ago. My mom told me to keep creating art no matter what. So I pressed on . For years I was a black and white pencil artist. I focused a lot on line work and shading but now I can't really see the lines. I see color and not details. The way I see is like a flat water color painting with very little lines. I just started working with clay and painting on my clay pots but lately I have not been very happy with my paintings. It's like every day is a constant reminder that I can't see. I was really down until I started looking at your videos. I realized that I can still see colors. After listening to you I learned that I should focus on colors first then add in some details last. 😂 This is a total shift in my thinking. It is hard for me to let go of lines because that has been my focus all my life but I am going to go back to the basics and build my way back up. Just like you showed me. I am so happy right now and I can't wait to get started with my paintings. Thank you so much for this. You made me love art again.

Wow, thank you!!! That is a very high complement! I'm so glad you found these useful. I have so many more topics to share and am working on new videos. Sorry for the gaps in time, my day job keeps me incredibly busy and I've been away for the past 5 weeks shooting a tv show. Now that I'm home I hope I can make a schedule to get videos out more regularly. Thanks again for the very kind words and encouragement

Now, I know the reason why I stopped painting. I never learnt to draw with lines and shapes. I started painting because I loved colors and I loved the fact that many colors which are not visible to the naked eye contributes in making a picture or a scenery beautiful. In the last few years, I was trying to do art like everyone else, using lines and shapes, although they are useful, that's not my style of art. I was lost for so long trying to figure out what's stopping me from my painting. This is just one of the reasons though. I feel like I am in an art class when I watch your videos. Thank you so much, I learnt a lot from your videos.

Sometimes I feel lucky to see this type of gem content which is not viewed by large number of people, but at the same time I feel like it should have even more audience. But the fact is this type of gem content is a reward who was searching for it.

So many principles that I've picked up through yrs of photography that you mention concerning light: specular, diffuse, atmosphere. Everything is about light. Not being much of an artist, these concepts will definitely ease my hesitation at trying digital painting. Thank you! 😊

Yes, the overlap between painting and photography are endless. It is truly all about the light. I'm so glad you enjoyed this Richard. Keep creating!

Thank you for making these videos, I always had a hard time line drawing. Painting with colors and forming my shapes feels so much more natural and is allowing me to get way more into my art. You have made a great positive impact on me thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge.

Yay! I'm so glad this was helpful! Thanks for letting me know. Scultping with lights is a different kind of art than drawing with lines and I too love it. Keep creating!! :)

just found your video while searching for paining tutorial. I have been struggling with light and colours. Your approach of unseeing shapes and seeing colour has blown my mind. Love from Bangladesh. I'll definitely follow your videos to learn more. Hope you keep creating videos every month. (though I know creating such videos needs so much preparations)

Had a weird moment this morning while driving to work... It was raining and cars were driving with their lights on. The reflections on the road were kind of bending toward me, not going straight down the road like I expected them to. Is it just me or has anyone else seen this? Perhaps I am just going mad! Your explanations of light and how it works are invaluable and I thought that if anyone would have seen this in life, you would!

This has got to be one of the most compendious (not to mention atmospherically soothing) breakdowns of how to go about incorporating light and colour for painting that I have ever had the pleasure of watching. I have a hunch that this will help me a lot going forward with my studies. Merci beaucoup

I've never had a problem drawing and working with other mediums, but painting has always driven me nuts. Your videos reframed painting and the basics for me. I'm back at square one, but I'm way less frustrated and feel like I'm finally making progress.

excellent - this was so clearly explained and so useful. Things I already sort of knew and things I was already sort of doing, but now I can approach them with intention and systematically

I have made art and thought in terms of lines for my entire art-making life, and I recently tweeted looking for recommendations on this exact topic, without knowing this exact topic (unlearning what I’ve learned to move forward) was what I was looking for. I’m so grateful to have found this video and your channel, and I’m about to go back to my prior tweet to add the link to this video. Thank you!

I stopped drawing and attempts to paint years ago because of colors. I always have struggles with painting colors. I have seen your videos about color study and it all made sense. Your contents are great.

Yay! Comments like these make it all worth it. Keep creating and I hope color becomes less difficult. You can definitely do it with practice

Hello Jeremy. It's me Jeremy too. Lol I'm in Alaska and you are right about light. We have so much light in the summer and then lots of grays and white in the winter. I have been photographing the same location for over a whole year and things change out there. The same spot can transform just like that. And the closer I get to the ground the more there is to see in a tiny spot of the forest. I am not very good at painting yet but I do have many mediums that I have yet to work with intentionally. I love your channel. NOONE has spoken as you have in such a simple explanation of lighting. I can't wait to look at your portfolio
