As always, a really enjoyable and informative video Phil, thank you. Completely agree with your Atoll/Neat recommendation. I heard the Atoll SDA300 and Neat Mystiques at the Bristol show. Was in my top 3 systems of the day. Really really impressive, even in what was quite a big room, so they scale up well if you need to. Very flexible and addictive system. Would love to hear the Ophidians too though. Of course, what would save lots of space in most British living rooms is ditching the vinyl storage and those bulky record players! (Just baiting you!)😏

Good video . A reasonable approach . i like your attitude of accommodation as opposed to rigidity . my room is a total disaster . 3 meters wide , 6 meters long with 5 M ceiling. i'm crammed into one end where the ceiling comes one meter off the floor bed and tv completely fill the 3 m wide section with my polk L 600s on either side of the tv about 3 m apart . Amp is a Marantz 30 . the sound is spectacular considering the physical limitations with voice appearing to come out and above the tv as well as the speakers . the separation is extremely good . the speakers are jammed against the wall which produces excellent bass . so my point is find a system that has synchronicity and couple that with a bit of appreciation devoid of " it could be better " and you will have an enjoyable musical experience .

Agree that Atoll products are very good. Just received my SDA-300. So far I find it a fine component. Greetings from Chicago.

It's amazing just how much the room changes the sound. I have a pair of floorstanding speakers. In previous home the room was longer but narrower. Now lounge wider but shorter. Stereo separation so much better & soundstage more 3D than before 👍 Speakers must have been technically too large for their previous setting.

Felt this pain over the last few years. Had Oberon 5’s which ended up booming so got PMC Prodigy 1’s which are excellent and can be placed pretty much against the wall. Tried to minimise the number of boxes so went with a super integrated amp (CA Evo 150) which was lovely looking and compact but had software and hardware issues. Went back to old school with an Exposure 3510 and my old CA CXN v2 streamer. Back to more boxes again but better sound and more reliability. Nightmare. One thing I have learnt and that is if you really care about SQ, don’t compromise for convenience as eventually it will be like an itch you can’t scratch.

The Triangle 40th Anniversary Comêtes perform well nearer to the wall, though I have them pulled out about 3 feet which is better for depth.

I have a bedroom system and the speakers were small Dali Oberon 1 in white with a grey nice looking dust cap on them. Nice finished speaker and quality for the money. They sound very nice for the right person. And what do i mean for the right person is that they sounded very V shaped in the frequencie response. It wows you innitially but then it got a bit tiresome. Ok, the speaker brand suggests you place the speakers firing straight ahead without toe in. But still not to my taste. I replaced these with even smaller fyne audio entry level speakers that look a bit cheaper in comparison but i got a nicer midrange. A bit more romantic sounding and both can be placed against a wall even on a shelf.

Phil, what do you think of Croft amplifiers ? This is a small British company that uses tubes and electronics. I am from Canada and can’t find a stereo store that sells them. Really like your videos.

Disagree re: Petites. My experience is they boom when too close to a wall, so I guess it’s room dependent.

Does anyone have any thoughts on the best positioning of Rega RX 1 speakers. Distance apart and distance from wall?
@oliverbeard79123 ай бұрын
I've been out of the loop for some time, but back in the day the Rega Ela,Xel and Kytes were all good with wall placement. Royd speakers similarly. Linn Kan and Tukan aswell. Generally something "lean" and "fast" is best to avoid obvious boom or thickening in the bass. Totem Arro are still around I believe and work OK in that position too.

@@oliverbeard7912 . Thank you. I have a pair of RX 1 I got a hold of they have been placed in a 9ft x 9ft room. What I wish to know is what would be the closest I should place them to a wall and the minimum distance apart?
@oliverbeard79123 ай бұрын
@@Abefroman-lq3mdHi. What I will say is that I'm not particularly familiar with the RX1,but given their size,depending on port tuning that they'll start to roll off at around 50-55hz.One point I will make is that Rega make wall brackets for this model,so I'd go from around 6 inches to 1ft out from the wall. If you can find some deep and "chesty" sounding vocals eg Barry White,Leonard Cohen you'll find that they become too "thick " and "heavy " when too close,but equally too "thin" and lacking in body when too far out. Avoid sidewalls being too close to the outside of the two speakers if you can.Hope that's helped?
@oliverbeard79123 ай бұрын
@@Abefroman-lq3md One other thing while I think of it is that Isotek,who make mains products also do a set up cd where you can test your system for imaging.They'll tell you when something should be centre stage,left,right ,close or further back. That should help with toe in and how far apart they need to be.Good luck.
