Always loved Cold Steel since they came out with the cheap Trail Hawks years ago. Not surprised to see the quality of this knife for that price coming from them. Ill even forgive the tacticool aspect of it!

For sure. Haha, definitely tacticool, but it gets the job done.

I have had the Recon tanto for close to 4 years. It is an awesome outdoors woods knife. I know nothing about knife fighting, but for chopping batoning, fire making, shelter building...this is the perfect knife. More so.....I believe than the SRK! It is the perfect length, and the perfect weight for swinging, and batoning. I sharpened the spine with a file to make it even better for scraping fatwood and other tinder material. I actually used this knife exclusively on a 3 months trip from Florida to Maine, stopping everywhere to camp and fish. The Recon was my main wood processing tool in addition to my corona saw. The only knife better than the SK5 Recon is the VG10 Recon, because then you can also add food and game processing where the SK5 will stain your food black. I have most of all Coldsteel tantos and outdoors knives from the 3V Master hunter to the 3V (2) Trail Master in all iterations SK5/VG1 /VG10/3V, but I have a fondness for the Recons!

Have you had the handle become loose at all
@samthai8188 ай бұрын
@Trevorschneider, I have not. I have an old Bush Ranger made in Japan that I purchased since 1995 that has field dressed and butchered close to hundred deer and the handle remains tight like new. The recon tanto I used mainly as a camp knife to process wood, starting fires, fishing, and the handle is still very tight. I believe if you throw it alot and do alot of chopping where you are constantly torquing the handle, it will get loose on you. I only baton with it, feather stick, use the sharpened spine for scraping fatwood/cedar bark, and the occasional limbing of poles and walking sticks.

I bought 2 white metal and 3 blacked versions of this knife...it's gorgeous. The blade width makes it one of Cold Steel's best production/functional knives ever! I'd love to see the vice/bend test done on it.

I love my Cold Steel Recon Tanto. Bought it was back in the 80's, when they where still made in the US of A, and out of Carbon V steel. I've hiked many a mile with it on my belt. Never needed it. Never had to defend myself from anything. But it is a great knife. The Cold Steel Tanto Tip, was actually invented by Lynn Thompson back in the early 80's. If you look at a traditional Tanto, it has a more rounded tip. I have one of those too.
@Crafty.Veteran.Survival4 ай бұрын
@longrider42 that's great to hear! I like this blade a lot. Definitely a beast.

The hollow grind and continuous curve combined with the short height and relatively thin stock thickness makes this knife a much stronger performer than you might initially think. You can tell a lot of thought actually went into the design.

I have had one for close to 30 years. Very lightweight, makes for a good fighting knife, able to change directions quickly, slashing and stabbing very well. Not as good as a field knife. No heft or weight to chop branches or to split firewood. I have Tops 107c Steel Eagle, Slysteel Cuma Kukri, and Slysteel Spectre Survival Combat knife for branches, firewood, making feather sticks, or kindling.

Hey man can you suggest some stainless steel survivor knife on a budget, under 100 dollars
@Crafty.Veteran.Survival Жыл бұрын
Mora Garberg. Has a stainless steel and high carbon version. Widely considered one of the best go-to stock survival knives (by myself and more experienced survivalists like Dave Canterbury, Jake Trent, Tony Powers, Joshua Enyart etc). It's usually around $80-90 depending on the sheath option you pick, definitely worth it. Comfortable handle, heavy duty, full tang, scandi grind, sharp 90° spine etc.

That's an 'american tanto' design, not a traditional Japanese one. While the triangle tip is based on a rather obscure Japanese sword design that was not common, Cold Steel has used it since the 1980s and a lot of people now think that's what a tanto blade design looks like. I can't stand it myself and wish CS would make their tantos with a traditional design in addition to this style.

Hi Everyone Seaside Ca.l Saw a Movie Last on KZbin Free Movie I believe it was between 1985 to 1990 it was called wanted Dead or Alive with Roger Howard. He was a pretty good action hero and he had a knife on his side and that was a TantoI’m not sure if it was a cold steel, but it looked pretty good.
I wouldn't call that clear hair shaving sharp, cold steel has fallen recently and their grinds are nothing like they use to, nothing like what you get from say, a Spyderco. This is coming from a professional blade sharpener and knife collector, you were really pressing hard trying to get that hair to cut and barely did the job. A hair shaving knife from me you have the pressure of the weight of the blade, that is ALL. And it should pop the hairs. Very cool knife and I can't figure out if I should get this or the SRK.
@Crafty.Veteran.Survival4 ай бұрын
@bullridermusic2054 Yea it definitely had room to be even sharper with extra honing. I want a Spyderco someday! I think the SRK would be good too. Might pick up that one myself someday, but I'm liking this Tanto a lot still

The Recon tanto is my go to outdoor knife. I like it even better than the SRK. I have both in the SK5 and San Mai. The Recon is a superior chopper and batoning knife to the SRK. The SK5 cannot be used for food prep because it will turn your food black, it will also readily rust. I find the Recon Tantos fairly easy to sharpen and easy to carry. A wonderful knife for outdoor use!
@Crafty.Veteran.Survival Жыл бұрын
It's a great knife! Probably one of my favorites. Thanks for watching!
