A follow-up video about the strap I reconditioned.
PSA: This video contains sub-optimal levels of sound due to losing my microphone cord, so if you can hear anything count that as a win. Even if that "anything" is tuneless humming. Just what I needed. I bought a vintage L.L. Bean (French movement, Taiwan dial) with leather strap, oxblood color, and am wanting to refurish it. Wasn't even sure that it was even possible. But now will give it a try. Thanks for the encouragement.

My grandfather was a shoe maker, I often watch him putting new leather soles on shoes, all handwork.

In the Royal Air Force we used product called black parade polish on the tips of our shoes. Apply spit, lighter to heat it gently, polish like mad and reapply. Many many coats later.. Leather became like a mirror. Took a lot of initial coats to bed in.

I know this is an old video, but I thought I'd share some info! A couple of great leather conditioners are Venetian leather balm, or Venetian shoe cream. Also Saphire Renovateur! And for a deeper conditioner, neatsfoot oil, or Smiths Leather Balm! And that sunken ship I believe had Russian Reindeer leather!

That came out nice, as old and dirty and hard as it is I'm pleasantly surprised. I'm not at all surprised by the technique. Genuine leather whether it's shoes, watch strap, belts, purses or what have you can never be hurt by cleaning and polishing, just basic care. It would seem to me that the older the more supple and more able to take the cleaning and polish, the richer it becomes.

And I was wondering, what kind of glue do you use to fix pieces and flaps that have come loose? I have a few of those on mine.

Still have a light corona, with cold like effects, but can't get out now, have to quarantine, till I test negative again, so no sidewalk astronomy for me :( And no new videos about the Stars, Moon, or Sun :( Well at least the vaccines work, not really sick at all.

We use gun oil for those straps :) Works on anything leather wood, rubber or gun :)
