In a talk from our 2011 Deep in History Conference, Fr. Ray Ryland explores how Catholics and Eastern Christians understand the idea of the universal Church, and how that informs questions of ecumenism. He unpacks what the Second Vatican Council has to say about the Eastern Churches, and the imperative to seek Christian unity. Fr. Ryland also explores what is meant by the term "Eastern Orthodox," how Christians under that umbrella have a sacramental connection with the Catholic Church, and what still needs to be done to foster authentic unity between East and West.

I am a Byzantine Catholic, and I am grateful to the late Fr Ray Rayland for his faithfulness in defending the unity of faith. After considering Eastern Orthodox faith for 8 years from 2006 to 2014, God brought me to the one true and only living Church, the Catholic Church. The latest attempt by our Eastern Orthodox brethren to convene a pan Orthodox synod at Crete was confronted with criticism from within. I lament the division that have been lasted for almost a millennium. I prayed may one day God will heal our schism and bring harmonious reconciliation. My biggest stumbling block on becoming a Catholic wasn't filioque, but on the authority of papacy. It is by grace that a veil was lifted up from my eyes. Being a Byzantine Catholic helps me to sympathize with our Eastern Orthodox brethren for abuses during the fourth Crusade yet also able to fully live Eastern mystical spirituality while remain in communion with the pope. To be Catholic one needs to breathe from two lungs.

@Hans S Do you have a primary source for that claim?

@Hans S Okay, I found what you mean. First of all: I don't know if you now this, but this commission who published the document does not form part of the ecclesial magisterium. Secondly, the Catholic Church always understood a certain degree of development of doctrine. For example: the document states (p. 19) that Rome did not exercise canonical authority over the Eastern churches. It does not state that Rome did not have authority. The development of doctrine is a difficult issue. I personally do not not think that the pentarchy is the best basis for discussion (though the East would favor this), since, for instance, Clement of Rome thought to have the authority to tell the people in the distant Corinth how to behave. Where did he get that?

@Hans S Well, the fact that this commission is not part of the magisterium is not a question of my thinking - it's a joint commission (that's its name!) with Orthodox and Catholic theologians and thus cannot be part of the magisterium of the Catholic Church. The Orthodox Church also believes in development of doctrine (e.g. the Credo of Nicea in 325 is not the one of Chalcedon in 452), but thinks development must have stopped in the 8th century (as Fr. Ryland rightly pointed out). The rest of your statement I do not want to comment.

Coming Home: I cannot describe how incredibly helpful you guys have been. You were absolutely key in my decision to become Catholic after a lifetime of Protestantism. However, why on earth is it taking so long to get these lectures up? Why is a lecture from 2011 not getting published until 7 years have elapsed? These resources are simply too helpful and illuminating to lay in the archives that long, unseen, unheard. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, do everything you can to get as many of these recorded lectures out as soon as possible. I cannot explain how helpful they have been for me, and for many people who have asked questions. Please don’t allow lectures like this and others to languish in archives for 7 years. KZbin has been around since 2005. I ask this because of my love for you and what you do! Thank you.

No matter the reasons behind it, pray and pray hard for the reunification of Christianity indeed. Do not sacrifice truth, but put full trust in Our Lord, for how but by Him could we hope to undo what indeed human sinfulness has wrought?
