In case anyone attempting this on Windows 11, you might need to disable SMB server signing via "Set-SmbServerConfiguration -RequireSecuritySignature $false" in an elevated Powershell window and after a reboot, should work fine!

Doug, thank you for making this. Really awesome info. I love these kinds of tutorials. Well done! Thank you, thank you, thank you! Really love the idea of being able to live edit while recording! Random question for ya... Obviously, you're extremely well spoken and knowledgeable of the subject, but when it comes to some of the product details, do you use a teleprompter when preparing or are you just THAT GOOD? lol I swear you have very long takes between cuts and I marvel at how concise you are about specs and the technical parts. :P
@djp_video6 ай бұрын
I tried using a script and prompter for a single video several years ago. It didn't go well -- I made a lot more mistakes and my delivery was very unnatural. It was bad. So I don't bother with scripts at all; at most I might jot down a couple bullet points that I want to hit on a Post-It Note. I do a lot better at this just sitting down and talking to the camera. Most of the time I don't do any prep other than gather any equipment I'll be showing -- from there it's just flipping on the lights and camera, formatting the SSDs, hitting record, and start talking. And whatever happens to come out of my mouth is what you end up with, for better or worse. I usually have some kind of idea of what kinds of things I want to say so there's some kind of flow and it doesn't go too far off track, but it's very much all off the cuff. The specs are easy for me... Memorizing that kind of stuff comes pretty naturally; my brain is very compatible with that kind of information. I might glance over a spec sheet before I start just to verify that my memory hasn't gotten corrupted :) and I'll sometimes remember to check on current pricing and availability of products I'm going to mention (kind of embarrassing when I review a product that's been discontinued or is impossible to get), but that's literally all the preparation I do for most videos. It isn't uncommon that as I'm recording that I'll think of a better way of saying something, so I'll back up just a bit and try again (that's where the edits between segments often come from), while the edits in the middle of a thought are where I get tongue twisted and need to restate something. Having a natural stutter doesn't help there. But, yeah, it's all improvised on the spot.
@CNC-Time-Lapse6 ай бұрын
@@djp_video man, that’s really good insights! I just picked up a teleprompter because I struggle recalling what I want to say on the spot. Panic under pressure I guess. Haha I don’t talk fast enough for the general KZbin audiences too I think. lol I have to remind myself, don’t try to be perfect, just be yourself. Wish it was easier though.

Great info as always, Doug! Is there a way, or a plan for a way, to integrate BMD Video Assist 12G camera monitors into the BMD network cloud environment in real time for recording of 4K BM RAW content; ie recording output to the VA’s USB-C port to a BMD Cloud-enabled device, or via a USB-C to 10G IP adapter to such a device? this would improve workflow by eliminating the need to manually copy SSD’s or move the SSD’s to a BMD cloud device to establish network access I’m hoping this functionality would not have to wait on a future VA model with integrated 10G Ethernet if this is possible it would help justify the investment in BMD infrastructure

Yes. The HyperDecks have a pretty comprehensive API available, and it's pretty easy to use. I know there are apps out there that can control it, but the easiest solution for you is probably going to be BitFocus Companion.

What resolution video are you recording? Are you able to do this with 4K video? Also, are you able to set this up for two cameras to record simultaneously?
@djp_video4 ай бұрын
It works with whatever resolution the HyperDeck you're using supports. In this case I was recording 4K30. You can do it with multiple recorders if your network supports that kind of bandwidth and the recording media is fast enough to keep up. So far I've only tried it with two 4K30 streams in ProRes, but that worked without any issues; in theory several more should be possible with my network and SSD. Switching to a lower bitrate codec like h.264 or h.265 would enable even more simultaneous recordings.

Helpful video, thank you! I need to set up an ISO record solution in a moveable case to be used with 2 installed ATEM environments. Cameras plug in to hyperdecks before feeding ATEM for live show (or via video router). Ideally in the long term it could be used in the Davinci replay workflow. 1. Can multiple Hyperdecks be connected to a Cloud Pod via a Netgear Av Line switch (1GBs in, 10GB SFP out) in a multi-cam set up (daisy chained)? 2. How does the disk manage the video files from multiple decks? (Does each stream take the name of the hyper deck or similar)? 3. What would be the max number of streams a USB-C drive would cope with recording ProRes LT 1080 25p/50i? 4. Would the Cloud Store with in-built M.2 storage have faster disk speed than connecting USB-c to the Cloud Pod? any assistance greatly appreciated.
@djp_video4 ай бұрын
1. Yes. But you don't need an AV-specific switch... just 10 Gb. 2. You'll want to customize the file name used by each HyperDeck from the Setup app. 3. That's going to depend on the drive. Some drives would handle it really well, while others would choke on a single drive. 4. Most certainly yes.

Hey Doug, I'm able to get my hyperdeck to record to my NAS but I can't seem to figure out how to get Davinci Resolve to see that live feed for the new replay features. There's zero documentation on how to set up, and I figure it's either not available yet or you have to have one of the blackmagic storage solutions, which I don't have.
@djp_video6 ай бұрын
I haven't had a chance to do any testing with this just yet. I'm not sure what mechanism Resolve is using to detect when the files have changed, or to allow both the HyperDeck and Resolve to access the file simultaneously. It's entirely possible that that mechanism relies on the storage device being an active participant.

10:16 Doug, I am confused. These are Hyperdeck Studio HD Plus units, right? Not the Pro? And if so, they only have 1Gbit ports. How does this affect the data throughput to the network and storage. Is it possible to do 4K30fps ProRes to a NAS or mapped drive with 1Gbit?
@djp_video6 ай бұрын
Only the 4K Pro has the 10 Gb port. The other models don't need it (though it would be nice for faster transfers to/from the SD cards). 1 Gbit is enough for a single stream of 4K30 in ProRes HQ. But two streams, or 4K60, are another story. For this video, 4K30 ProRes going to a computer is one of the things I did. If you look at 4:30 in the video, the two Hyperdeck HD Plus models combined are outputting at 1.25 Gb to the Cloud Pod, so even two records at that resolution/frame rate are more than a single 1 Gb connection can handle. So the computer would need a 2.5 Gb connection at a minimum in that case for two streams. USB 2.5 Gb adapters have become really cheap these days, so getting that speed into a computer isn't hard.
@fredextry6 ай бұрын

1. I am worried that both will end. If at least one of the two continues to be recorded, there is no need to worry. I think this is because there is a traffic jam. Just a guess. 2. I am wondering if traffic is a problem because I am using a gigabit network router. 3. Is ssd speed the problem? Or is it because I have a lot of fever? 4. I plan to test the Samsung T9 because it has a speed of 2000. 5. LG Notebook I7 / 32G / SSD 500G / Sundfault supported laptop 6. Files are divided using the spill command in streamdeck / companion and / sync works well. 7. I need to test MOV+mp4 several times, but there doesn't seem to be any problem. If you record 59.94p for 1 hour, MOV will be 90G / mp4 will be about 11G. There is a difference of about 8-9 times. In theory, if you use mp4, you will be able to record with 4 cameras.
