You would learn from one of the best.
Texan record breaker pilot Bruce Bohannon, and his two masterpieces, the B-1 Flyin' Tiger, And JM-2 Special Pushy Galore. Together they achieved more than 30 world records.
Bruce Bohannon is one of the most recognizable faces in modern aviation. As of 2005, he has set 35 Aviation World Records in two homebuilt airplanes. Pushing the limits of general aviation aircraft, Bruce captured the attention of the press and the imagination of pilots worldwide.
Thirty of Bohannon's world records were set between 1999 and 2005 in his highly modified RV-4, "The Exxon Flyin' Tiger." Registered as a "Bohannon B-1," the Tiger is an all-metal monoplane designed specifically for setting time-to-climb and altitude records. As of 2006, it is the fastest climbing piston-engine aircraft in the record book to 20,000, 30,000, and 40,000 feet and is the first homebuilt airplane ever to cruise above 40,000 feet. Twelve of the Tiger's records were set in the "Unlimited" category, which includes all piston-engine aircraft, regardless of weight. His most impressive climb records to date include the time to climb to 20,000 feet in 6 minutes, 16 seconds, time to 30,000 feet in 9 minutes, 43 seconds, and time to 40,000 feet in 20 minutes, 24 seconds. As of 2016, Bruce has reached a maximum altitude of 49,347 feet in The Tiger.

The Bohannon B-1 is a purpose-built aircraft to set new world records in its class for time-to-climb. It is a development of the Van's RV-4.
Bohannon and Miller built the Miller-Bohannon JM-2 Pushy Galore to set new time-to-climb records and compete in Formula One air racing. Bohannon continued to set records with his new aircraft. He acquired Exxon as a sponsor for record attempts. His B-1 was painted in a stylized tiger paint scheme and named the "Exxon Flyin' Tiger".The aircraft went on to set 30 altitudes and time-to-climb records.
The Bohannon B-1 is a low-wing, all-metal single-seat aircraft with conventional landing gear. The Lycoming IO-540 engine is augmented with nitrous oxide to increase power from 260 to 425 hp (194 to 317 kW). For 2001 attempts, a Lycoming IO-555 was installed.
1999 - Time to climb to 3,000 m (9,843 ft) record of 2 minutes and 20 seconds.
2000 - Time to climb to 6,000 m (19,685 ft) - Six minutes, thirty-seven seconds.
2001 - Absolute ceiling for a piston engine aircraft - 35,000 ft (10,668 m).
2002 - Absolute ceiling - 37,536 ft (11,441 m)
2002 - Time to climb to 12,000 m (39,370 ft) in 32 minutes, 2 seconds
2002 - Absolute ceiling - 41,300 ft (12,588 m).
2003 - Absolute ceiling - 47,067 ft (14 346 m)
The Miller-Bohannon JM-2 Special, named Pushy Galore, is a one-of-a-kind American homebuilt Formula One racing and record-setting aircraft. It was based upon Jim W Miller's Miller JM-2 design, highly modified by Bruce Bohannon.
Bohannon began construction of Pushy Galore in 1988 and first flew it in the early part of 1989, first entering it in a race in June 1989.
The aircraft is of three-surface configuration, having a cantilever mid-wing, a single-seat enclosed cockpit under a bubble canopy, fixed main tricycle landing gear with a retractable nose wheel, a t-tail and a nose-mounted canard. It is powered by a single rear-mounted engine in pusher configuration.
The aircraft is made from welded steel tubing covered in molded carbon fiber. As required by the Formula One rules, its engine is a 100 hp (75 kW) Continental O-200A.
Only one example was ever built.
Bohannon entered the aircraft in the Reno Air Races in 1994, qualifying in third place in the Formula One class, with a speed of 236.153 mph (380.051 km/h).
In 1995 Bohannon flew the aircraft to second place in the Formula One Gold championship race at Reno, Nevada.
Bohannon also used the aircraft to set world time-to-climb records in the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI) C-1.A class. At AirVenture 1994 Bohannon set a new world time-to-climb record, climbing to 6,000 m (19,685 ft) in 12 minutes and 50 seconds. In January 1996, Bohannon climbed the aircraft to 9,000 m (29,528 ft) in 41 minutes and 35 seconds, setting class world time-to-climb, absolute altitude, and altitude in horizontal flight records. In July 1996 at AirVenture in Oshkosh, Bohannon set a third FAI class time-to-climb record of 3,000 m (9,843 ft) in three minutes and eight seconds.

Like to thank Bruce Bohannon For being an inspiration. and especially for standing up to my dad at the Reno races about the item over the canard for Pushy Cat, Sadly, my dad just died, and I'm gonna be taking over the reins of a few items left behind from the carnage of the way life takes people sometimes, Looking forward to running into Bruce again. He's a real level headed engineering mind and truly safety comes first with brilliance. Thank you again, Bruce someone can pass that along. Sincerely, Michael Crosby.

well the TA152H was rated at 472 mph 47,000 feet in 1944 with a piston engine. Seems like there was at least one Spitfire and Tempest as well, but did not reach the magic 470 mph number

would that have been after WWII? It seems like there were some + 40,000 feet flights in the late 1930's as well@@vascoribeiro69

@@garytotty3971 yes, was 1952 and the PR19 flew routinely over China and , in this episode, was collecting atmosphere data for the Comet operation. Closer to the equator the atmosphere is thicker than at the poles. Also, the PR 19 was equipped with a RR Griffon with ttwo speed two stage supercharger. It also got to Mach O.96. Would retractable landing gear increase the ceiling despite added weight?
@davide8764
@davide8764 11 ай бұрын
Retractable landing gears are inherently heavier than a fixed one, despite having the drag reduction, an aircraft's absolute ceiling is not dependent on drag but on weight

@@davide8764But less drag via the landing gear would equal extra wing area, Aka more lift.
@efoxxok7478
@efoxxok7478 11 ай бұрын
@MAX5WM Davide8764 came very close to calling it. At the altitudes we are talking about the biggest factors are engine performance prop performance, and wing performance. Weight also comes into play to a degree, as well as drag. But of all these drag is the least issue, and the drag reduction with a retract doesn’t overcome the added weight. Of those three in a piston engine it comes down the biggest issue. Piston engine performance drops exponentially with lesser air at high altitudes. This is why turbo chargers are so necessary. Also the higher a plane goes the slower the speed of sound gets. This can be a big issue with prop efficiency if the tips go supersonic.
