THIS IS PART-3 of an interview conducted late 2016.
In 2010 Mac Mackenney broke the London to Cape Town record in a Land Rover Discovery-2 TDi5. This is the vehicle that was used for the record attempt.
Mac Mackenney is probably the most experienced adventurer that I have ever met, a true professional, and owner of Max Adventure (www.maxadventur...). He has been Sir Ranulph Fiennes’ (www.ranulphfien...) right hand man for decades, and lives at the extreme edge of survival adventure. I was privileged to interview Mac in late 2016.
Mac Mackenney - adventurer extraordinaire. www.maxadventur...

I like how this guy thinks. No drastic lift. No drastic engine mods. Reasonably standard suspension. Standard comms. etc. No snorkel!!! Sensible driving and approach to safety!! It goes to show what can actually be achieved with a standardised approach. Being in Australia, I don't think I could bare to go back to my pre-air-conditioning days!! He is extremely well organised and his military training is an enormous benefit to the preparations. He isn't one of these weekend mountain goat cowboys. He actually represents the true spirit of the overlander. Thanks for sharing and would love to see you both do some overlanding together. Bring him on the Canning Stock Route ;-)

Nice interview. You didn't ask a bunch of questions you already knew the answers to, the way some interviewers do. Cheers from Florida!!

Good lessons there. Safety and reliability are the top priority. I've been making my way through Mexico/Central America for the past 10 months and it's always the folks with heavily modified vehicles that I meet that have had more issues. Get a reliable vehicle, do some maintenance and get on the road!

ihmesekoilua Since we are currently traveling we can't edit more then we are. unfortunately one episode currently takes us 5-7 intensive days of editing. If we edit more then that we won't enjoy the trip. We did just buy a New computer and editing software (arrives with a guest today in Costa Rica! along with a telephoto lens and drone!!) and hope we won't experience anymore crashes, and can shorten how fast we produce an episode. Lots of love in each episode 😉 Thank you for tuning in!

Bah, I am so tempted by a Disco 1 or 2. Would love a Defender 90 but the prices are just going absolutely insane here (in the UK)
@joekirklin
@joekirklin 5 жыл бұрын
CAElite you think the prices are high in the UK?! I can only dream of owning a Defender here in the States. The going price for a 20 year old Defender 90 is often more than my annual salary. I have a Disco 2 that I love, and it cost me less than half what a Jeep would have. Folks here in Michigan wonder why I would want a temperamental British 4x4, but with some care and feeding it’s actually been quite a dependable vehicle.

Great job, I love this kind of interview learning how the drivers did it and how the vehicles were set up. I am curious as to why the electric fan was disconnected?

Forest Platt Probably because in case of deep water the fan can break due to the strong fluid resistance.

Toyota has a limited slipper clutch on the fan. In case of deep water the clutch desengage the fan preventing damages

fgibin I know Jeepers that convert to electric fans just do they can install a switch to disable the fan during water crossings.

In fact I don't get some modifications done on this truck. Why he disconnect the air condition? This is the best thing in hot countries. And do it need this roll cage ? It weights a tons. I would definitely add a snorkel and winch to it, it makes me more confident in 4wd expedition than the useless roll cage.

Mr. Mackenney, you have the best, most exhaustive and most informative bit of informaiton available regarding actually surviving an expedition across the world. But very ironically you forfot about the most important part....the vehicle to be driven. Why on earth would you drive a Land Rover or a Nissan across the world rather than a Land Cruiser. That is insane. Everyone on the planet knows that the Toyota Land Cruiser is the most reliable. Period. ???????

I had a left hand drive motorcycle I took to a RHD country. At that time they were more interested in hoof'n mouth, so I had to take some time in car wash confinement. The owners manual said I could tape over part of the headlight, but customs didn't say anything.

so, the coil spring was broken and you had to change from air to coils?? Where is the logic? Just get air springs without any electronics and pump them up with a simple valve plus take 1-2 spare air springs.

Southern Nevada offroading and back country you are kidding mate, so cooler, less restricted air flow decreases power?
@1FiftyOverland
@1FiftyOverland 7 жыл бұрын
Scott Willmann Cooler yes, less restricted not really. Look how much more length a snorkel adds to the intake track. This engine is now working harder to pull the air that much further. The same way shortening or lengthening intake manifold runners changes the torque curve of an engine.
