@@snorrebusch5020 hi, I bought an SM58 years ago for vocals. Would it be worth getting a 57 as well for instruments? I've tried the 58 on instruments and can't get a decent sound. Thanks

Stephen Tyndall If you struggle with the 58 om instruments you would struggle with 57 too. It is basically the same microphone. But you can hear in my video that it is possible to get great sound with two SM 57. But there could be different factors that works against you to get that great sound. Everything from the instrument, performance, recording technique and the room you are trying to record in. You could also check out a small diaphragm condenser microphone. They sound really great on an acoustic guitar :)

How is it that you dont get a dirty background noise, I try taking it out but cant get a clean sound at all?
@snorrebusch5020
@snorrebusch5020 6 жыл бұрын
It could be many different things making your room pop out in your recording. Have you acoustically treated your room? You may be driving your preamp too hot so the room ambience gets picked up by the mic. Recording hot into your DAW is not the same as getting better sound quality. If you get to much room noise anyway you could try to run an Expander as a first plugin of your mixing chain to reduce some of that ambient sound :)

@TheOnlineBusker
@TheOnlineBusker 5 жыл бұрын
I use Scarlett 2i2 2nd gen too, ad have just tried sm57 for acoustic , found that I had to turn the gain knob way up AND have the mic real close to guitar, as the signal was low, OR use compression on the way in, that's what I decided on in the end... CLA 2A (or anyother compression will do the same), dunno if that helps you man but try it..
@nomnom112
@nomnom112 4 жыл бұрын
Did you find a solution for this? I thought my mic was broken but it's probably just an issue with the scarlett.
@Mark-zi6nt
@Mark-zi6nt 4 жыл бұрын
@@nomnom112 Might not be the issue with Scarlett necessarily. 57 is more directional, always has to be directed at your mouth or the sound source. Solved the issue with sm58 that was more dynamic / has more range. I don't have to be so close to a mic for just talking through a Discord, for example. But for louder vocals, preamp on Scarlett and both 57 & 58 is perfectly enough. As for the guitar..well, yes, you might want to boost volume (if necessary) in your DAW. Another factor is the guitar itself. Mine might have been quieter and softer than his on the vid. If you got more questions - i'd be glad to help and share what i know.

Nothing is more recommended over the other. It is two different approaches to recording. The benefit with recording vocal and the guitar at the same pass is you'll catch the performance. I like it because I feel I capture more of an organic performance vs recording the instruments separately.

@snorrebusch5020

Hi, The hiss is most likely coming from your preamps. So what you could try is to record on a lower level and then turn it up with plugins after you're finished recording. That my help you a lot with your problem. Just turn up your headphone volume to compensate while recording :)

Setting for the sm57 on the vocals?
@snorrebusch5020
@snorrebusch5020 6 жыл бұрын
Well that depends on who is singing. In this video it was the right amount of gain, right amount of distance to the microphone and then strait into my audio interface. No plugins used. The biggest factors I'd say is the room the vocal is recorded in, and the distance to the microphone. When you back off the microphone you get less proximity effect(bass) and more air between the singer and the microphone will give you a natural compression. This will give you a nice result to mix later :)

How are you getting such a clean signal? As soon as I turn up the gain it picks up so much feed back/white noise
@snorrebusch5020
@snorrebusch5020 7 жыл бұрын
That could be you're pre-amps making the white noise. I have very clean preamps that has very low noise ratio. You could try to give less gain on you're pre-amp so that your pre-amp gives less noise to the sound. Maybe that could help you out : )
