Recording bass guitar is the next step in the project. In this episode we look at how I do it with the restrictions of a home studio. More importantly, given the crucial role of this instrument, we look at preparing our DAW to get the best performance!

Oddly enough I have a real Fender Precision Bass that I bought in the early 70s. I left the Precision with my daughter when I moved into a retirement village (the unit is too small for a lot of gear). Not long back I bought AmpleSound Precision and I find it better than attempting to record the bass. The trick is you really have to understand what you want out of it. (That is either a VSTi or the real thing). Once again thanks Mike.

I agree, bass is one of the more replaceable instruments in terms of real for VST - depending on the song for me.

What I do when I need realistic bass lines is record guitar, put it an octave down, then run it through Sonic Anomally's Bass Professor. That gives a pretty realistic bass sound. You could also use Bass Professor Mk II, but it's more of a less colored sound.

Hi Mike, yet again fantastic - so thought provoking. I'm ageing now but so addicted I've bought my first midi controller...YIKES. A question if I may please? I play 1950s Rockabilly guitar but want to recreate the upright bass of the like of Scotty Moore or a fabulous Australian band called the Flatfoot Shakers. Do you know of a VST plug-in which I could use, or more excitingly could I achieve that sound with my new controller please? Thanks Steve (aka Sonny Richards)

Hi Mike. I finally got my audio interface and have been starting to experiment with recording VSTs. I have my drums down and started working with the bass VST. I get the signal, but it’s not coming thru the left side in my headphones. I spent over 1/2 hour trying to figure out what may be set wrong, but I can’t find anything...yet. Any suggestions? Love your channel and tutorials.

Thank you so much for doing these videos. I'm really struggling with the drum thing, so I'm looking forward to your next episode in this series. Your talk of the cajon reminded me I wanted to get at least one of them, which helps with percussion stuff. It's easy for me to record externally, but programming drum tracks from scratch is not where my talents are. I only wish I had the room (and no landlord living above me) to record proper drums. I love Ludwigs, but the closest I can come is Alesis electronic drums or something. Debating between those, a piano, and a bass guitar for my next purchases. What would you recommend needs to be done first? I know the piano would give me midi control, even though I would be going for a full-size piano. I play everything but the bass, so my bass lines will be simple...I might pitch-shift on the guitar, instead...is that even a good idea?
@CreativeSauce
@CreativeSauce 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Rain, thanks for watching! I would personally go for some kind of MIDI keyboard first, you will get best value for money there, and some excellent bass VSTi s around too. If you can afford, full size is an excellent option. Just be careful, if you go for a pure piano, it probably wont have pitch shift, or modulation controls. Pitch shifting a guitar can be a fun effect, but not really a substitute for a bass. You'd probably do better with a VSTi bass.
@RainStickland
@RainStickland 4 жыл бұрын
@@CreativeSauce I'll make sure whatever keyboard I buy has those options, then. Thank you. It would certainly make it easier to tap out those drum beats, rather than trying to use my mouse...lol. And thanks for responding!

I started at zero two weeks ago. I found your intro videos, downloaded Cakewalk and have progressed to the point of at least knowing what I don't know.. and I have my first project in the works. I do have two questions; from the part 1 video, did you loop the acoustic guitar to fill the song like you did with the drum track? what if the guitar changes somewhere in the song? Q2; in the Bass recording in this video, did you record the entire bass track for the entire song in 1 take? How do you fix a bad note or other mistake?? Your training is the best I have found, thanks!!

Hi Steve, I'm so glad to hear you are getting started. Completing your first s9ng is so important :) With bother the guitar and bass, I didn't copy and paste, although I could have. The reason I didn't is because I felt there were very subtle changes in feel and expression that I wanted to be there - even if it was only me that can hear them! It's rare however for me to pull it off in one take. I would usually record about 3 takes and stitch the best parts together. This is a process called comping which I discuss in a future episode, but also here in terms of vocals: kzbin.info/www/bejne/haqWhYGFbbSBiZo The ability to easily edit best performances together is really one of the massive advantages in modern recording I feel!

Apologies if you cover this in another part of this series, but when I record bass, I find that the E string "booms" in comparison to the other strings. Have you noticed this (it looks like you actually use the same bass as me) and how do you get round it ? Thanks in advance.
@CreativeSauce
@CreativeSauce 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Michael. There can be many factors which affect this. Although it can be fixed later with EQ, it's better to get it right at the source. Apart from factors like playing style, fingers, thumb, pick etc - you may also wish to look at the pickup height under that string.

I have a question ! Should we record the instruments with low frequency first and ascend towards the instruments with high frequency ?
@JustinS__
@JustinS__ Жыл бұрын
I don't think that that is necessary. I would record drums first before other instruments because it sets tempo and a sense of time. After that go with what feels right, but I would make sure to record vocals after some other instruments, especially if you do not have enough time to make good baseline/placeholder tracks. But to answer your question, the short answer is no, it does not matter.

Not a criticism, just a query. Why not record the Cajon first? Feels like more work to create a virtual track to replace later. Good video. Greetings from the UK.
@CreativeSauce
@CreativeSauce 4 жыл бұрын
Its a really good question! To be quite honest, just workflow at that point. In my case, setup was gonna be a little more complex for Cajon, so the creative flow felt like it would be interrupted. To lay down a quick VSTi, for me just takes a few minutes. But in honesty, I could have done it the other way around!
