SD Kid thanks for your vids! I grew up on a family dairy farm in Meridian, Idaho. It is now a full "section" of houses. It is not easy, keep your head up and keep the videos coming. Not many of you strong willed kids remain!!! I have a lot of respect for you and your family.

I'm milking cows down here in New Zealand. Man alive you guys have a capital and labour intensive system! We are situated in the Bay of Plenty area of NZ. Temperature range all year round varies between about 10 to 30 degrees Centigrade. All animals are outside, grass fed all year round. Meal feeders in the cow shed on our property, not all farmers bother with them. You talked about feed costs going up, grass just keeps growing for us thankfully. We don't have a protected market, if we are not competitive we are history. Good vid. Cheers.

@6:00 I had to laugh at the steer who challenged the front end loader that was going to drop dirt to fill up his hole. He took a couple loads to the head. Pretty funny that he wouldn't stay out of the way.

I remember dairy farms in southern California, watching this reminds me of the smell and how good the milk was. I think the milk we buy in markets now days is watered down.

Correct. Raw milk from the cow contains from about 5% to 7 or 8% butterfat. But in the USA, regulations allow milk producers to label as "whole milk" anything over 4%. So they strip out all that to make cream, half'n half, etc. and add back only enough to bring it up to the legal minimum for 'whole milk'. They didn't used to do that, so milk DID taste better. Also why a lot of yuppie new-age fools claim that unpasteurized, raw milk tastes better -- of course it does, it has a higher butterfat content, which is most of the taste.

After dry cow antibiotic treatment it might not be a bad idea to spray paint or identify just in case a cow somehow escaped and got back into the lactating pen. Trust me as a former milk inspector it has happened. I recall one time dry cows were moved 3 concessions away and one cow jumped 3 fences broke some gates and got back in with lactating cows. Antibiotic inhibitor penalties are huge. I am super impressed with parlour cleanliness / hygiene and of course milking procedures are goals standard.

That large section that will end up being in between the 2 barns could be filled in with water tanks. Prime location to be fed from most of the roof tops and would give you something to use in an otherwise inaccessible part of the farm. Could probably stockpile the rain water if there is another dry year to spray over some acreage to increase yield

Take the hat off, and heck - your shirt, and show us what you do with the little time you have with the sun and warm temps up there. I think all your viewers would enjoy it, and it would be something fresh and fun! Thanks for your hard work informing us and entertaining us. - J

Hi Jan. Great video as usual, you cram alot of work into your day, you must fall into bed at night completely knackered. All these cows produce so much crap, i cant begin to imagine what it must smell like, the picture shows a scene that looks really clean and nice for a farm but can you capture what it smells like, and that poor old skid steer just looks like a mobile crap, i dread to think what its like inside, yet you always look so clean and tidy! Even when you get out of it. I suppose you must be used to it and dont even notice any smell. Love your accent by the way could listen to you for hours.

I used to haul at a farm that had a 12’ deep pit that held 1.1 million U.S. Gallons. He put 1’ a week into that pit. Had a second one put in right beside for their heifer barn, and we always have to go and transfer about 4’ from the dairy pit to the heifer pit so he can hold for 6 months….

Hey ya, Jan. So I know this is kinda weird but as I watch your videos I wonder at times what the cows are thinking and how complex their thoughts might be. For instance, in this video you dried-off 20+ cows who have been in the exact same routine for months. Their world was limited to the main barn, the milk barn, and maybe a side trip to get their hooves trimmed (cow-pedicure) then all of the sudden they are dried-off and moved to a different barn. I notice they seem excited. I wonder if they remember the last time they made that move or is it new every time? I think it is interesting to wonder how complex their thinking may or may not be. It seems that every now and then us viewers get a glimpse of what might be a cow personality or something similar to what we might notice as personality. Maybe my thinking is nonsense. Anyway, I find the work that you are fortunate to do as fascinating. Thank you for your time filming, editing, and sharing with us.

What happens to the material you inject into the cow's teats to be dried? Is it a "plug?" Does it just dissolve over time so next season the milk can flow? Or is it some medication that stops the udder from producing milk?

That poo pit is a bit concerning. That tractor that is in half is probably not going to be fixed in 12 days. And I dont think the cows are going to stop poopin. Why wait for it to get so full? I thought the sand agitation crew did practically nothing last time (in terms of actually getting the sand into suspension) and that you needed a loader to clear it out. Why give them another shot?
