Record of Lodoss War: Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth is one of my favorite releases from this year from the PC version that I played and I can't wait for my copy for the Switch to arrive. The polarity system turned out to be very useful during boss battles, especially if you kept one of your elements at the maximum level so you could heal yourself by switching elements while dodging attacks. I hope more people find out about this game because it's a gem that nicely scratches that metroidvania itch and the more solid metroidvania games on the Switch, the better. Another metroidvania hidden gem from this year that Switch owners should check out is Astalon: Tears of the Earth. It's another of my favorite games from this year that's a blast to play and it has one of the most interesting death mechanics that I've seen in a game. It is available for only $19.99 USD from the Nintendo eShop and is definitely worth the price. Those who enjoy a well-done 8-bit aesthetic (I know that seems overdone with indie games in recent years, but this one is a stand-out) will find plenty of eye candy with this game. I only wish that a physical version is available at some point in the future.

Nice review! Super Magnetic Neo (2000) had us switching magnetic polarity as a gameplay mechanic but in a 3D platform game. It's the first one I can remember doing that and it made my brain hurt sometimes.

If i remember right, the connection between fire and salamanders came from salamanders living in woodpiles. When the wood was tossed onto a fire, the salamanders would flee, but would be unhurt. Medieval people saw the salamanders leave the fires unhurt and assumed the white venom that comes out of their skin was firefroof. Medieval people also thought asbestos must be the fur of these fire resistant salamanders, because asbestos is fire resistant.

As a fan of the series myself, since the 90s, I think it's really cool that the game is also available for Switch, the 1 port was available for PC in a trial version, so the game made a really nice impression So far I only have 1 game of the series in the hack at Slajer part for DC. Which is actually not a bad game ^^ But on the Metroid Wenia for Switch, next to the Mugen Senjy series. Which I will also put to myself ^^ I'm looking forward to it when it would appear in Europe.

Just finished the game. I´m also a Fan of Lodoss War since 1995 and i also agree with being disappointed with the story. The Pixel art is gorgerous, the gameplay is excelent, maybe better than Castlevania: Synphony of the Night, but the music is a "meh". A good Adventure-Exploration game, even better if your like Record of Lodoss War.

Metroid is a "search action" game. Castlevania SOTN took that base and added rpg elements, creating a variation of what Metroid was. So yes, "metroidvania" is a correct term to refer to search action games with rpg mechanics.

0:27 The M-word... I can only fully agree. The very FIRST game that did a side scrolling huge world was Metroid. The only game getting close it Legend of Zelda, which had a similar big world but was not side scrolling. Since then there are many games that do something similar, including Castlevania 2 Simons Quest, and later Symphony of the Night.

This takes place sometime after the original series and before the new manga that is set 100 years after the chronicles of the Heroic Knight I would highly recommend watching the series as the story might make more sense and having a knowledge of the lore will give you a greater appreciation for the game and it’s characters.

Picked this game (and it's anime on blu ray) a couple of months ago and just started playing it on my Switch a few days ago and it reminds me alot of Castlevania: Symphony of the night (PS1), though with a more vibrant color palette. Also dude...Castlevania came out a couple years after Metroid on the NES (if I'm stating the obvious with you I apologize).

I consider it superior, as I've played it somewhat on PC already and hated the controls. It's def one of those games that's meant to be played on a hand held device, not a keyboard. Def grab the Switch version.

100% AGREED MAN! I played metroid nes as soon as it came out back in the day. The PROPER term for these games is "Metroidlike". I LOVE symphony of the night but c'mon it came a lot of years later, and NO, Simon's Quest is not a freaking metroidvania, if anything that game is the blacksheep in the nes trilogy (altho I enjoyed it a bit).
