VLC isn't really ideal for recording a screen anymore, OBS would be a better option. I did a video on OBS at kzbin.info/www/bejne/rmmqk4qqapuHors In regards to the buttons, you can customise the interface by going Tools -> Customize Interface...

When looking at the profile, you could go "View codec" (tab) and in the tab that is shown, set the bitrate to something like 4000. Make sure your resolution (in the next sub tab) is setup to not downscale.

I'll be honest here, you are the first one in all these comments to have this issue and I have no idea why it would have occurred regarding you followed the video correctly. The version shown in this video is really old so I don't think it would be an issue unless it's older than 2015.

I don't believe VLC would be able to handle much anymore by it''s general performance these days for recording. I recommend using OBS (tutorial at kzbin.info/www/bejne/rmmqk4qqapuHors ) as it has a lot more features and is dedicated to recording and streaming. Also you will be able to record internal and external sound with this.

I am sorry if this is everyone's question, but whenever I do it, it crashes when I hit start, I have a pretty powerful computer I am recording to mp4, and I am recording onto a separate hard drive. Should I try on my original hard drive with windows, or just change a setting? I know you won't know everything, so I am just hoping you have a clue as to what's going on. Thanks!

For those of you who keeps getting crashes, got this from Michael at www.vlchelp.com/how-to-record-desktop/: "In response to those having problems with VLC crashing when capturing the desktop in Windows 7: I’ve found this to be a problem with VLC 2.2.1 or later (documented bug). Version 2.1.5 does not have this issue. If you’ve already installed the latest version (like I did), uninstalling the newer version must be followed by deleting the VideoLAN folder from Program Files (or Program Files x86 depending on version)…uninstall does not clean this folder out. Then install version 2.1.5. I also found that capturing to a network location doesn’t seem to work well either, so capture to a folder on the local drive."

This is a very outdated video and in some cases may not work anymore unfortunately. It seems that most recent versions have issues when trying to use this method and it hasn't been fixed in quite a long time. Something that will work regarding that you set it up properly is OBS. I recommend you watch my video on OBS at kzbin.info/www/bejne/rmmqk4qqapuHors . I use this to record my videos and it is great.

in final its says Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file.

I have used it to record over an hour before and i'm sure it won't crash if your computer does fine with it recording. Maybe try something like OBS just to be sure? That's what I use know and it works great.

Corn Flakes true my computer got damage by obs, I didn't even know but it was, best buy annoyed me until I exchanged it for a new one, then I try to download obs, again and right away I got the blue screen of death, I reset my computer, and then stop with obs, now I'm not getting blue screens. Nice to see clear directions, however, vlc versions after 2.1.5 are known to be buggy under Windows, especially for screen recording. In the event users do have failures and unexpected results, get 2.1.5 Rincewind from the vlc repository, and carry on.

i recommend using audacity for ur voice, later in editing, you can slap the audio from audacity onto the video from vlc

Hi you can use other sites that provide the same service. You can try using Video Keeper instead. Its an all in one Video downloader, screen recorder and converter. But if you are looking for a standa alone screen recorder for free you can try their web-based app. ( acethinker.com/free-screen-recorder) . This records all screen activity inclusing MIC and system sounds. If this doesn't work for you , you can use Showmore, Apowersoft's Screen recorder or Videograbber's screen recorder. Those are all for free.I hope this information helps.

VLC doesn't record audio when screen recording. For streaming you are going to need both video and audio in one stream, I recommend using OBS.
