Drums were the most obvious sound difference for me, couldn't tell at all with the bass. For me it's harder to tell the difference between mid-speed and high-speed so I always record at mid-speed to save tape haha

i always record at mid speed too unless i’m going after a pitch effect

Just wanted to let you know that I really appreciate what you are doing here. I used to work with a Yamaha MT4x up until 20 years ago and then went DAW. Every couple of years I decide it's time to go back to tape and analog console just for the tactility of it. I have not yet found the right device, though. I wouldn't mind the limitations.

i appreciate this comment! I’m a product of my time, so i am a heavy DAW user as well, but for some reason, this space seemed more fun and worth building a community around...cheers!

I had a guy tell me many years ago that his buddy had a reel to reel deck back in the 70's that he would use to make "party reels" with. He used the big 10.5 inch reels and recorded music from LPs on them at 3 3/4 IPS. This was also an auto reverse deck! He said that the music would last all night long and keep the party going into the wee hours of the morning.

@@MadeOnTape Absolutely! I can definitely see the benefits to using a reel to reel machine over playing LPs at house parties. For one, you don't have to keep changing and flipping records every 15 minutes. You also wouldn't have to worry about drunks stumbling into the turntable and skipping the stylus!

Years ago I was having problems finishing a tune, and then I read that Stravinsky once said that music is never finished, just abandoned (not comparing myself to him at all mind you! Ha!). I got the drum machine and guitar quiz correct, but not the bass track. It's easier for me to hear fidelity quality on higher-pitched and "full range" tracks than bass (coming from a bass player!).
@MadeOnTape3 жыл бұрын
people will laugh at me, but by the time i’m editing these i have forgotten which is which, so it’s like taking the quiz myself. I was having trouble with hearing the guitar, but i’m certain my hearing is to blame. Stravinsky’s words remind me why i love live recordings so much. Good musicians continue to develop the music after it’s been recorded, mostly out of boredom, i’m sure!

@@MadeOnTape Agreed. You can always find things to fiddle with, if not make better. It's like playing the same production show on a cruise ship for months, if not years. :)

In first experiment, what were those drums? Snare? That's where the notable differences are...as expected in high frequencies. As Buddha taught 2500 years ago, middle way is the way to go my man! That will save you lot of strain in life and tape!
@MadeOnTape2 жыл бұрын
i love the middle way. drums are from that TR-505 love that snare sound

I found that the faster recording sound brighter and more clear than the slower speeds. I think I might prefer the middle speed because the slow speed can feel dull and lackluster and the fast speed can be overbearing. So the middle speed serves as a compromise between the two. However, I can see an use for each speed. Also, thanks for sharing your story about perfectionism, that can be a real block for some people.

💯 i think every speed and tone has its place, like a color in a painter’s palette 🎨

Omg everytime i watch your videos i have more questions haha! They always get me juiced to go record some tunes! You mentioned there is a 4th between the slowest and highest speed, is that the same on the "high speed" model of this very same machine?
@MadeOnTape3 жыл бұрын
i’m super happy to hear that! i’ve never personally used the high speed version of the Porta Two… i’d imagine they just put in a motor that runs at 3.75 IPS? easy test: record a long note (like middle C) at the slowest speed. play back and check if it’s a fourth from the slowest to fastest. hope this helps!

I have 2 of 3, using cheap headphones, but the hi freq is easy to hear at hi speed obviously. If people hear it through the cellphone speaker you can record at 1/500 ips 😂
@MadeOnTape3 жыл бұрын
oooohhhh now i want a 1/500 IPS machine lol

Question, can you do a video about saturation using reel to reel? Because I can''t get no saturation.
