Good stuff as always! My question - What is output impedance (microphone specification) and what am I looking for when I read this on a microphone spec sheet?

Working in audio post production, I find it’s more useful if people pay attention to good nominal levels and good mic placement while avoiding distortion and air movement hits from wind and breath than worrying about a few recording low frequency artifacts… LF is often the easiest thing to remove from dialog either with editing or EQ. It’s also crazy that on set people do not isolate away from on set noise sources like lighting box hum and air conditioning, etc. You could dampen the noise source, or at least mic the actor to entirely reject the background noise. A widely ignored principal with less experienced crew.

I've heard many differing answers and curious what you guys think: What's the correct way to set audio levels in post for videos. And what are the ideal levels?

Familiarize yourself with LUFS, Luke! It depends on the end medium (tv vs web vs...) but this is part of normalizing your audio. I normalize to -16 LUFS for KZbin, for example. Curtis Judd has some great videos on this subject, fyi

Question: What is the minimal amount you can use for decent soundproofing? I've used a mic pointing up to my mouth at maybe a 30 degree angle with a sound blanket draped over a c-stand arm and it improves the sound tremendously. Curious what you guys think, without needing to soundproof the whole room.

What would be some ideas on how to record a speaker at a conference or event when we don't have an opportunity to plug into the soundboard? I've gotten lucky with being able to grab an xlr out from a speaker, but other times I've gotten terrible audio by trying to toss a recorder inside the podium or gaff taping it to the front of the stage or top of a speaker with no xlr out.

You should know that if you record a voiceover in a mono (1 channel, let's say left only) and you put it on a stereo track (like in davinci resolve) you will have +3 db more than if you would put the recorded mono track in a mono track in the editor (davinci resolve) !

I have a question about the D-XLR. My understanding is that it turns the dual-mono 3.5mm TRRS to a balanced mono XLR. Does the mono to balanced conversion happen in the D-XLR, or does the D-XLR communicate with the Deity V-Mic to output balanced instead of dual mono? Also is it exclusive to the D3 Pro? Or does it work with standard D3? Finally, if I convert the other end of my XLR back into TRS, would it still work, or does it need Phantom Power? Thanks :)

Could you do a video on sound recording etiquette? I was on a shoot the other day recording audio and was told by the post sound dude that I was creeping into his territory (I was basically turning the trim down to mute as a character walked off into the distance off camera; he said he would do that anyway in post). At what point do my duties stop and post begin?

It is an XY setup because the capsules aren't at the tips of the microphones. They are actually much further down the tubes.

1. Have you noticed the problem with your mics used so close here? Because they're so directional whenever you turn away from the mic the level drops drastically. 2. XY stereo array requires cardioid not super-cardioid. The SAR will be too narrow with your mic. The stereo array you show on the choir is not XY either. 3. What you state about "dual mono" makes no sense. A mono track can be panned anywhere between left and right. There is already a pan dial on a mono track. No need to duplicate it.
