Impressive results! My room is less than half the size of yours, I'm thinking that if I have to do this one day, I'll probably have to use amp sims for tracking guitars and drums together and then reamp to keep the feel of the takes. I'm sure your channel will grow; you have a different approach than most audio youtubers and I think you made a right choice to do it in english as I would have never heard of you otherwise!

Sylvia Massey describes recording Rage Against the Machine in a room with a full PA raging cause thats the only way they felt comfortable playing! I think she even brought in a bunch of people to watch them play live. I think performance and tone always trump isolation but your suggestions are good practice. Great recordings, as always!

Really cool. I've been recording live more and more in recent years and have grown to love it. A tip I learned was to listen to guitar amps and listen for where the biggest rejection is. I usually find it's on the side of the amp (like a figure 8 mic), and I aim that towards the other instruments so the bleed is less.

Great video, it reinforced some of the things I do in my studio to get a good live sound. I also run a "clean" signal straight from the guitars and bass into the mix. It helps when editing and adding "plug ins" for added sonic depth.KeepRock'n

I tracked a band live once in my small room so I recorded the guitars and the bass DI, so I didn’t have to deal with the mic bleed. Later we did overdubs on the guitars, bass and vocals. So we got the live sound feel but a little more controlled.

WE record live. I agree that you try to face the amps apart. We also play at a lower volume. Finally, We use mostly dynamic mics which helps us to get virtually no bleed. Then I will use a room mic to get the overall room feel and a pair of drum overheads that are cardiod. There is some bleed with the overheads but not too much if you place them fairly close to the kit. So the only real bleed I get is for the overheads and not too much. Might not work for some genres but for a garage band that uses a lot of tremolo and reverb, the room sound is not a problem for us. We even record vocals live frequently and usually like the takes better than overdub takes. Again, we use a dynamic mic (SM58). To avoid using headphones, I use an XLR box that allows me to run one XLR cable into the interface and one into the PA. then we turn the PA down. It's load enough to hear in the room a little for the band but not so loud that you get bleed from the PA speaker into the dynamic mic. Might sound crazy but works for us. And allows us to record a hell of a lot quicker. Tracks are still EQ-able despite a little bleed here or there.

One thing all the videos is missing is that how do we (band members) hear what we play? Especially when you have multiple electric guitars and electronic drums.
@hoborec
@hoborec 2 жыл бұрын
Good point! The easiest way is to just let them play as they do when they rehearse. No headphones and just the sound from the amps and a monitor wedge for the vocalist. If I need to use headphones now I run a monitor mix through our Aviom system.

i would guess the vocal mic would be to one of the sides of the room- so the microphone isn't pointing towards either the drums or amps, and it would reject some of the noise?

Thanks! I have some experience recording the way Vance are talking about too, but then I was in a much larger studio than my own. But I never really did it as he talks about with the room mics making the basic image of the sound. Think I have to try that even though my room is really small =)

I really like to record bands live in one room.The biggest problems I was facing were loud guitar amps bleeding into the overhead mics on drums. Normally I really like to compress the drum bus and/or apply parallel compression on the drum bus wich brings out spill even more and can lead to a weird pumping guitarsound. With some bands you can get away with using smaller amps but some for example need the abillity to have feedback etc. Have you dealt with similar problems? How do you approach drum compression in such a scenario?

Awesome video, I have one question, if im gonna record a band live including the vocals, which is the best way for the band to hear the vocals, given than the mic is goind directly to the mixer-interface and to my daw, i can send a vocal aux to a monitor speaker but wont that put at risk the vocals if the other mics get some of the vocal monitor and causes phase issues with my vocal track?
@hoborec
@hoborec 7 жыл бұрын
Hey! I usually use just a regular monitor speaker on the floor in front of the vocalist. It gives some bleed, but I think it just makes it sound more roomy. If you check my Live Sessions videos, most of them are done like that. I plug the singers microphone in to my interface and then run a line out from the vocal track to the monitor.

Is it possible to still get good enough transient data from the drums to replace them with samples? I know the bleed can be a lot, but just curious if it is too much to get good transients to trigger a midi sample. And great songs at the end - they sounded great - especially when recording live!
@hoborec

Hey Ulf! I found this video particularly interesting. I do live session recordings. I found your technique really interesting (in terms of where you place the drums and the amps. With my last session, we tried something new, and although you might not be able to see it, we actually faced the bass and guitar amp the same direction as the drums are facing. Bass amp to the left of the drummer and guitar to the right. Surprisingly, there was almost no bleed! And all the instruments are projecting sound the same direction, so if you want to get really scientific about it, the phase relationship should be the same. My biggest problem (as usual) having the vocals be faced towards the amps and the drums. The kick and snare always peak through the vocal. Either way, for recording live instrumentals, I recommend you try out this technique. Again, just line everything up side by side in a straight row (bass amp on the left, drums in the middle, and guitars on the right) and have the amp grills lined up to about the resonant head of the kick. It actually sounds really good. Okay, I'm done ranting now. thank you for putting out awesome content. I love seeing your process (and you mixes sound massive!!) check out how the session I just talked about sounds below and let me know what you think! cheers! kzbin.info/www/bejne/i2ipi4iMf5l2pMU

Indeed the band has to be pretty good. I just finished mixing and mastering an EP for a stoner/doom band, but since the guys couln't play well the record sucks pretty much. It sounds okay, but the guitarist bends every note avec the drummer is not consistent either regarding dynamics or time. But hey, it was recorded in the drummer's basement. Tracked, mixed and master 4 songs for 200€, so I hope tey don't complain ! :)
