I still have a CD of his from 1990 - Cedar Creek. I used it as sleep sounds back before white noise was a thing, or at least, readily available. It was so soothing and peaceful.

What a great video. I've been recoding nature sounds for years. I have always been on a quest to record the purest, cleanest, and quietest sounds from nature, such as a valley in the mountains where snow fall is the only sound. But like others I struggle to find nature where man's presence is not heard.

Thank You for presenting this story! I can completely relate to the issue's Mr. Hempton is bringing to light. I record nature videos in the south coast region of Oregon and north coast region of California. It is very difficult to get a clear non-sound polluted recording whether I am recording along the Pacific shores or in the Redwood forests. Even from isolated and remote locations there is all too often un-natural background noises that interrupt my recording. This is a sensitive and difficult issue to address on many fronts in regard to economic, political and environmental concerns. Some of the commenters here have labeled this as a "fluff" piece which I totally disagree with... Mr. Hempton's story evokes serious thought and conversations and has raised the awareness level of this issue... Kudos Mr. Hempton and CBS Sunday Morning for this excellent piece!

Very interesting video, I grew up in nature with the Boy Scouts, we did just stop and listen. I had never thought to compare that time to previous listenings. I had always compared what I saw visually.

There is still sound far off the coast of a given country. This is not the ocean either. It's a hum that can be heard. In 6 years in the Navy I've only heard the lack of it a couple of times. It can only be noticed when its gone.

Get a really long shotgun like Shure SM89. Or if you don't want to get a used one the Rode NTG8 is really great too also really long. Or if you don't want to spend too much money then get audio technica AT8015 shotgun. A few inches shorter but still nice and long directional.

Get the Usi or Usi Pro from LOM Audio. They are both the same just one is XLRs and the other is 3.5mm plug. Really sensitive and detailed capture and only around $100. Some of best most accessible microphone I ever hear. As for recorder that is a personal choice. I use Roland R-07 portable because it has better audio and quieter preamp than all the zoom and tascam handhelds.

@@KandiKlover I agree with you. And if you want an accessible microphone but for sound design, I invite you to try the AKG C 411 PP contact microphone. It is rather to capture the sound in its depth nature. if not, there are the ambisonics microphones, but the professional ones are generally expensive. Regarding the audio recorder, I add: if your budget allows it and you don't have to worry about having a slightly larger device, a recorder like the Sound Devices MixPre 3 mark II or MixPre 6 Mark II, could be very useful.

Yeah plenty of places without aircraft overhead where you really remote and if you get lost you die fast. You just have to know how to find them, you go to the officially labeled places that claim to be and you not gonna get it. Like how people say Green Bank observatory is the msot Radio quiet zone, it's not. My Grandma's house in the remote forest is a 100 times quieter. Gotta start thinking for yourselves and be independent.

This is a typical "woe is us" little puff piece about how civilization is drowning out the sounds of Nature, but what's left out is who's doing this and why or what anyone who watched the piece or cares about noise pollution can do about it. There is no discussion of politics or economics which are the two drivers of noise everywhere and the eradication of Nature on a mass murderous scale. The Washington State Olympic peninsula is home to a few hundred US Navy jets called "Growlers" because they are the noisiest aircraft in our entire arsenal. They are driving the locals out of their minds and out of their homes. You might think since this fluffy piece literally begins there, mention of the US Navy invasion, with sonic booms and other phenomenally loud disturbances on an almost daily basis would merit at least a mention. If you want to understand why the American public is so apolitical and ill informed, look no farther than a media devoted to profit at the expense of all life and or any future for humanity.
