that blurred mic appears to be rode nt1a and Im pretty confident about it :P

yep, harshness in higher freq and overblown low end. amateurs tend to love that. I've been hating the nt1a, liking the tlm 102 and loving the tlm 103.

Thought the same thing! Sounds all high and hissy like an NT1 too.

Wait no, it's an MXL 2006. The grille basket is much too tall to be an NT1. Plus the MXL is legit cheap.
@dzamusic8 жыл бұрын
you're right. I was watching it at 0.25 speed between 0:10 and 0:11, there is a short frame where half of the mic is not blurred. seems to be the MXL 2006. definitely not the NT1A.

It's all subjective, but I definitely feel like they should have gotten a louder vocalist, or instructed this one to do a louder song, because I feel like that's one of the biggest challenges in recording -- properly capturing loud, booming vocals. Which brings up the question, why do they have no acoustic treatments or foam on the wall? It appears that room would create some natural reverb with the stone walls and hard floors. I've always been told that you want the dryest signal possible, and a loud vocalist would probably create all sorts of reflections in that room.

The mic that is blurred is the MXL 2006. The MXL 2006 is known to have a brighter sound if you simply look at the frequency response. It's wrong to assume that all cheap condensers will have this bright sound. Also, we all know that female vocalist require a warmer sounding microphone and the MXL 2006 obviously isn't that. I am betting that the MXL 2006 was chosen because of its overly bright charterctiristcs in order to exaggerate the effect of overly bright microphones. Its not even the most common condenser microphone, I would say the most common is the RODE NT1A or the Audio Technica. If you chose any other mic, Rode NT1A, AT2020, MXL CR89, Gensis, etc, the difference will not be as obvious. There will be differences and I know the Neumann mic will def sound more smooth but not as obvious. I am not saying the TLM103 is a bad microphone because it's a great microphone but not all of us can afford it and exaggerating the difference between a cheaper condenser with an expensive one by purposely finding a super bright cheap condenser makes all of us feel like we can't record with anything but expensive condensers.

Hi feLine, Most vocal screens are not perfectly absorbing, but reflecting sound a little as well. This reflections may color the mic’s sound. So in rooms with good acoustic behavior (as the one we shoot our videos in) and no need to reduce unwanted room sound you often get better results when working without these screens. It's fine as long as you record a single instrument at a time. But for anything else I recommend a mic with different characteristics. Cardioid for example is only useful if you use it on a single instrument/vocal at a time. If you want to record more instruments/vocals at a time I'd recommend a mic with a omni directional characteristic. But the NT1a is more in the lines of the cheaper microphones they showed in the video. If you want a really good sound you have to upgrade to something like the TLM-Series but they are expensive so I have to stick with cheaper ones as well :P
