Thanks for watching and glad you like the videos. The UAD plugins, I think, are all processed on the chip inside of the UAD gear. So they are not processed in the computer. But my video is referring to compression in the recording phase being applied pre computer by bing used inside of the UAD Console.

My question is what happens when you take the plugs-in off after you track through them. Does it change the sound?

Nice! It depends if you recorded with them in monitor or record mode. Monitor you just hear the effects and that's it. But record you print the effects as well. I would use monitor so the artist can use reverb and get a better performance then in the mix I can sculpt the reverb to however I want it

Excellent video! This was very helpful! How can I reduce compression with inserts on guitar? I bought an Apollo Twin and have been recording guitar with the XY method with an SM 57 and SE 2200. I use the acoustic guitar inserts, but when I record and play it back, it sounds tinny. What can I do to avoid that over compression?

For XY recording I would use the same mic for the stereo setup. For 2 mics I would just point both at the amp speaker straight on. Try moving them around because directly at the cone and off axis sound different. Then blend to taste. The tinny sound might be phase cancelation

Great Video! Since the Apollo twin does not have two head phone jacks what solutions would you use to monitor what the artist is signing as well has providing a headphone mix for the artist. That is if you are in a studio that does not have a separate vocal both? Thanks

You can use a headphone amp going output 3-4. That is how I used to do it on my old interface.

Richard Grey Richard - I bought a cheap behringer Headphone amp (sorry) and just plug outputs 3/4 into it if I need another heapdhone out. (or 4 headphone outs). Works fine and cost me $20.for the Amp. They are CHEAP. Route the cue mix to 3/4 in the DAW. Done.

I like 24 bit because it has a larger dynamic range. Plus some sources may want a 24 bit version so if you already started there then you are good to go.

The microphone is picking it up and you are getting bleed. You should record with headphone that are closed so they don't leak out into the mic.

So the real question here is what is the advantage to using a compressor before a track is printed into your daw or simply using a plug-in later? Obviously with the plug-in later you can alternate any point at all. So is there any advantage to using the compressor inside the Apollo before the tracks get into your computer?? Thanks!

There are a couple advantages to compression from an outboard compressor or the UAD compresion option. One is you can prevent clipping with outbaord compression but a plugin in the DAW is already stuck with the clipped signal. So an outboard compressor can protect your audio. Another benefit is you get a fatter sound with color (depending on the compressor used) in the recording process. This is based on your taste but I do like compression during recording. It just sounds good. The disadvantages are you are stuck with the compression so if it is too heavy there us no turning back.

Great stuff. I think the Apollo Twin is over rated. I’ve had my Apollo Twin for two months now and I just didn’t like the way the mic pres sounded. It’s not warm enough. Before Apollo I was using digi002. For some reason today I decided to run my Rode MTV 2 inside of my AKAI MPCX input and send it into my Protools OMG 😮 I felt like I’ve been took and there was the Milk And honey big round and warm. I’m like ooh damm what the hell is inside of this MPCX. NOW I GOTTA DO MORE TESTING.

I would add reverb in the DAW so you can change it later. But put a reverb on a AUX track then send your vocals via a bus to that AUX track to hear it run through reverb.

Yeah the compressor being pre DAW means you are compressing before it hits the software and it's permanent. Using compression in the DAW you can take off and adjust.

@@moritzmeyns9285 It can be a saftey net to prevent clipping. If you get loud in 1 part and you didn't leave enough headroom then you would clip. But the compressor will even you out and prevent that. But say you have plenty of headroom and you don't have to worry about clipping then compression on the way in is just a way to control the vocals during recording. Because it is commited to the recording yeah it can be a disadvantage if you mess it up. When I was recording regularly I had a analog compressor and having fat tamed vocals coming into the DAW just helped the mix with a great start. So I guess it is more of a preference.

I think the main reason is just committing to the sound and using DSP. Because it is an digital compressor plugin and uses the built in dsp, it must work only after the converters? So preamp-->converters->compressor->computer. In that case I don't think you could use a compressor inside Apollo to prevent clipping? 🤔

Its somewhere on UAD forum. Also the UAD Rec/Mon button only bypasses post AD signals. The unison slot is always recorded in DAW. Doesn't affect the workflow tho - just make sure that the output from Unison pre isn't in the red. The only plugin that compresses before AD as far as I'm aware is the Manley VoxBox

Yes. UNISON is the only time where the plugins "Physically" change the actual Pre Amps. Though the plugs in the other slots are so nice and use the UAD CPU's that it's well worth using. But for altering the input - only UNISON (hiZ/Line/Mic 1-2). Cheers! enjoy your purchase. I am!

Here the trick with uad sound cards, now, try to do a punch, you have to setup a virtual channel for playback, with same aux send setup. oh but wait what if you had music playing back, it would get all the reverb too. no problem just sent up another virtual channel, but wait not its not mixed in the main out, no problem, make a dupilicate reverb on playback track. actually all of this is a problem, a big pain in the a$$. and thats why its not practicle. and why they had to make there own daw. now in luna this gets solved, but if your using any other daw, all i have to say is your going to get good at routing and wasting time.
