Congratulations on reaquiring your old boombox radio. My first real ghetto blaster was the Panasonic rx-f35. Got for my 17th birthday and it rocked ! 7.5 watts per channel rms. Separate bass and treble knobs and a loudness button. Plus left and right L.E.D. meters. Then in 86 I joined the Navy and after boot camp I was stationed in Meridian, Miss. Went to the base exchange and bought a Panasonic rx-c48. That was the first radio/boombox I purchased with my own money as a young adult making my way out in the world. Have since required both units and many more. Love vintage boomboxes.

Great video. My first boombox was a Philps D8132 which i still have in fully working order, My first hifi was a York hs3131 brought with my first months wages from Woolworths in London Victoria which is still working albeit in my attic safely covered up . Loved my tdk mar cassettes although took along time to save up for . 😅. Cheers

Awesome! The white-tipped antennas, green headphone port, matte black plastic, and 'SONY' engraved into the handle are some of the hallmarks of 90s Sony boomboxes that I'll never get tired of seeing.

For me the equivalent device sat before this unit in the boombox timeline. Mine was a Panasonic RX C45LE which was just a cassette player radio. I found one forsale on Ebay here in the UK in a neighbouring city and I had to have it. The guy selling it had re capped it and it was in immaculate condition with no scuffs or scratches. When I walked into the guys kitchen where he'd set the unit out for me to view I was almost knocked sideways with emotion, it was like seeing an old friend for the first time in 40 years. I drove home with it on the passenger seat and probably had several near collisions through staring at it instead of the road. Now the unit comes out with myself and my partner whenever we go away in our campervan, sitting outside listening to some 80's mix tape and drinking cold beer! My partner is somewhat perplexed by the relationship I have with what she perseves to be an inanimate object!

I had a Fisher Price Kiddie cassette player from a very early age. I was 2 or 3 at the time. That was my first audio device. For my 5th birthday, I got a Soundesign cassette-radio stereo boombox in red with blue speaker grilles and a yellow handle.

The Sony CFD was my first CD boombox as well & it was a really nice solid unit. Great memories of all night music sessions. I still have a cassette with stuff I recorded off FM radio with the unit & the recording quality just blows anything around today out of the water.

Late comment on this video, but I wanted to share that I was thoroughly devoted to Sony products from the late 80s-on and have almost never been disappointed. It was just top of the line stuff every time. Have several old Sony boomboxes and....even today they still work! And I used them a lot. I only upgraded to a different machine because I wanted some new feature (Like a CD player!). Didn't have this particular model, but great job on finding one in such great condition.

That's a very handsome boombox. I never got a boombox until I was well into my adult years. The one I use now is a RCA RCD159. It has funky controls which provide me with additional amusement beyond the functionality. Sometimes I totally forget how to use it haha. I loved the transition to CD. I found the whole process of discovery to be so exciting. I had no great love for vinyl records in those days they seemed clunky and inconsistent and I wasn't old enough to be nostalgic for them yet. CD's were like my audio dreams come true. When MP3's came along I was disenchanted with them and found them to be utterly without charm. They sounded bad and you couldn't even see them! CD's are still my favorite format. The best of all worlds.

I feel you when it comes to nostalgy. Being a 1974 year release myself, I’m very familiar with turntables, reel-to-reel, cassette decks and all that followed. My own first boombox that I actually payed for was the mighty JVC RV-B90 aka the Boomblaster, back in 1999. God, how I miss that thing! I’ve never heard a portable to match it’s sound, ever! Built like a tank, it was my neighbors’ nightmare. I wish I could find a good one like yours, regardless of price.

I received my first and only boombox at 15 in 1983. It was a Quasar (can't remember the model number). Cool thing about it was that you could detatch the tape mechanism from the main unit and use it as a walkman type device.

I still have this exact boombox in the shed. It was well used as a bedroom stereo from 94-05, a shop stereo from 05-10, a garage stereo from 10-17, then a shop radio again from 17-21. It has since been retired because the speaker surrounds have blown out and vibrate when turned up. The CD and cassette portions worked up until the late 2000’s. I think I may dust this one off and get it going again. Thanks, great video!

I wasn't around in the 90's when boomboxes like this were around but I did get a Panasonic RX-D55 a few years ago and it's close to what I imagine an old quality boombox to have been like, I've heard it's the last of the decent boomboxes around today, proper metal construction and good tape deck and all the features. I think it's recently been discontinued but it was an old model anyway, they just kept making it for a while.

I have a super similar Sony boombox that My parents gave me for Christmas around that time. The model I have is a little smaller but same basic design idea. That boombox has sat in the garage as basically a shop radio. Just a few weeks ago I was looking at it, wondering if anything worked but the radio. I thought it might be time to move on, both of my Folks passed on in the early 00's. Sure enough, the CD player still works, the tape deck not so much. I suspect it's a belt, I'm not going to crack it open. I could probably find a belt, but I'm done with cassettes so I'll save myself the headache. I was just out of the Army and starting JuCo, I worked in a record store that sold the Sony line of boomboxes. That stereo ties me to so much of my past, takes me back. I thought I totally understood My world back then, even though I didn't really. I remember a kid in the 9th grade who wanted to put the claim that "CD's are indestructible" to the test while in art class. I'm not even sure it was his CD, oops! They aren't.

I can't believe the sound on those babies! I have the 1992 model (CFD-120). Found it at an antique store, downtown Athens. I have it for four years now. Got it for €20. Radio and CD are working flawlessly! Τhe tape belts need replacing and it will be perfect. Thankfully I do not listen to tapes. But I put its CD player to heavy, everyday use. It has great bass and loudness. It can fill a medium sized room with ease. It only skips if the volume is ultra loud and the vibration make the CD wobble inside the player. Which is totaly normal.

The "boombox" I had and wish I could find one now in good shape was the Sony CFS-201. It was just a smaller AM/FM/Cassette box. Very simple, played loud and clear. Traded it to a guy for something else, don't even remember what now. BTW, that boombox you got, that was a great price for something in such good shape. Congrats!

Hello to you from Yorkshire, brings back memories of my boombox that I bought in about 1988. I didn't have a cd player but used my dad's. Only had a few Beatles CDs then. I had a Sharp wq t238 double tape deck. It had 4 band radio, graphic equaliser,X bass and on the tape deck it had skip search. It claimed 60watts and I can vouch for it. Only downside was if you wanted for it to be portable it took 6 d batteries.

Most likely 1992 as I got the predecessor the Sony CFD-50 for Xmas 1991. The two are basically the same just the CFD-55 had some cosmetic differences and added bass boost. My friends all had the same boombox mostly since they were $179.99 which was the most affordable name brand cd box available at the time.

Fantastic Video !! Those CD/Cassette boom boxes from the 1990s were,at that time,in their heyday ! You have featured a prime example, from that era !! Reasonable features and sound quality !! Compared to the GPO Brooklyn Boombox, from about 2018-that I paid nearly £280 for a few years ago,yes it has the additional features, such as Bluetooth and DAB,asd the ability to record onto USB(as well as onto cassette)-But none of the features work very well-I paid a lot of money, for something that I am extremely disappointed with, given the high price tag !! The cassette deac has since broken,no longer plays,or forwards/rewinds and my tape is trapped inside it,because the eject function no longer works !! Your Sony Boombox from 1991,knocks spots off,my recently purchased GPO Boombox, literally blowing it out of the water,in quality, sound and durability !! They sure don’t make ‘em like they used to !!

I've got one that's very similar but may be the predecessor of the one you have. It's a bit cruder looking although the layout and speaker design are the same. Mine didn't have the mix mic input but I do have the white tip! As with every Sony boombox I've had, the cassette player controls broke after about 5 years, but the CD and radio worked when I was using it in the office 2.5 years ago. This was a fun video for reliving my own past with this player - I need to get it out of the garage tomorrow and check it out. I've also got a bigger, boxier Sony boombox with removable speakers and bass and treble controls but still takes a lot of design cues from the old one. The older one is my favorite of the two.

Another great video and a great bit of kit. Light years ahead of anything now. One little tip or advice on tape decks that are fully manual mechanical controls it’s best to always hit stop between going from play and fast winding. Theirs just more of a chance it will either chew the tape or spool some out that will get caught up on the pinch wheel. You can jump between one function and another no problem on a logic deck though. Enjoy your new toy!!😁

Nice, thank you...I used to have a decent hi fi system, and got rid of it a year ago, bought a simple cd boombox for 40€. Small unit, no more cables, connections and amplifiers, no more big speakers and that's it. It doesn't have the best sound, nor any particular power output, but it sounds nice and i realy love it more than previuos system, which took me half of the living room. Sure it will wore out in a year or two, but i will then buy another one, it's cheap. Boomboxes rules.

Buying used vintage gear pays off only if you can do repairs yourself. A repair shop will charge a bench fee of around 70 bucks just to tell you what it will cost to fix. You lose that if you opt out. I took in a Technics dual deck for new belts and it was going to be $250.00 minimum. I said no and wasted 70 bucks. DIY and you are golden.

I have had boomboxes of all brands but there is something that I didn't notice until I became an adult, they had horrible sound quality, but in my youth that was enough. Nowadays I only have one of those Sony boomboxes that look like a flying saucer and when I listen to it from time to time I find it very lackluster, not even the bass boost can improve it. I need HI-FI or I can't enjoy music. I don't think anyone buys those boomboxes anymore even though they still sell them. For the nostalgics I would recommend a Lasonic TRC-931. It's my favorite but never owned one, and are very expensive.

I lived with a couple of guys in the early '80s. Roger and Bob. Roger kept up on the latest technology. He had a computer with cassette tapes (!). In his stereo system he had one of the first CD players. I don't know how much it cost, but it was a bundle ($500.00?). I was fascinated by CD's with the bright colors and jewel box cases and they didn't get scratched. In 1985, I had a teaching position at a university and that kept me occupied. Fast forward to 2005, when I finally was able to listen to music again. I had kept all my records and CD's sounded too perfect, too sterile. They sucked all the life out of the music. I have maybe three dozen CD's which I don't listen too very often. Ones and zeros. Yeah, I'm an old curmudgeon. If vinyl is a flash in the pan, with something new just down the pike, that's O.K. Records have been in existence for over 120 years and they will be my preferred medium of sound reproduction. Anyways, have a good week.

Techmoan, though one of my absolute favorite KZbinrs, is a bit of a boombox snob. I'm guessing he would deny that, but he loves the high-end models from the 80s that are like full stereo systems that you can carry around. For the average person, too big and heavy, and now WAY too expensive.
