I've had cannabis-induced psychosis 5 times from age 40 to 48 because I smoked weed on top of my Adderall prescription. I quit everything in 2023 because during a manic psychosis episode, I cashed out all my retirement accounts and ruined my finances and lost my job. I ultimately was arrested, twice, and this is what it finally took to wake me up to how horrible weed affects me. I swear to never touch weed again, and I am slowly weening off of Adderall as well. I am praying for Ethan as I know what he's been through.

I totally know exactly what Ethan is talking about. I've struggled with alcohol and addiction my entire life. THC, i thought, was the answer. No hangover, no wasted days recovering from the night before. To experience THC psychosis is, in my mind, is like being insane. What people dont realize, there is a fine line between sanity and insanity. Having crossed that line, i never want to go there again. 9 years clean and sober this last December through working the 12 steps and working with a sponsor. Addiction is a FAMILY disease. I hope the parents that attended this talk, set ego and "what others will think", and get honest with themselves, and seek family treatment. Not just treatment for their child.

Ethan you are an awesome young man!!! My son was addicted, in and out of rehab and I was always there for him, but always went back to his “preferred” way of feeling relaxed. He often said that the voices in his head does not leave him alone, he also spoke to people even though we were alone, he was eventually in constant psychosis, but he kept on smoking his cannabis he was admitted again, and very angry with me and his siblings once again. 5 days into his treatment he died by suicide in 2022, it has been the hardest two years of my life without him, always asking if there was something I could have done more to help him. I've also had a wed induced psychosis. I haven't smoked for 10 years, and then 1 month I spend $1000 in 1 month and got lid up. I'm talking waking up and lighting up. Worked, return home, and smoked the rest of the night. Well I stopped smoking, I was waking up in my own sweat for 1 month from weed. I didn't do any other drugs. I was also losing a lot of weight and I lost all my appetite. Anyway I went into deep psychosis- lost complete connection to reality. Was in police stand of for 10 hours. It was really bad. I almost shot my neighbor, and I was almost shot by cops. My house got destroyed by cops- it was like a Hollywood movie. I remember being inside my house. There were 10+ cop cars outside talking to me over megaphone. Helicopters flying, drones flying, SWAT trucks outside, K9 barking, Riot teams, These cops shot everything they had in my house - mostly bean bags and gas canister rockets. They broke all my windows. I was able to use a wet towel to and lock myself in my bathroom. In the end thank God no one seriously hurt. I ended up getting a felony and it fucked my life bad. Very difficult to get a job or find rent. I only smoked flower - never any dabs - so I think flower can be just as dangerous as dabbing - if abused heavily.

I experienced schizophrenia after smoking weed. I had smoked for years, and during my time at university (around 18 yrs old) I started to hear voices. They started off sounding like they were coming from off in the distance. I thought I was being followed. I kept smoking weed and my friend had to stop smoking with me, because I’d hear the voices every time I smoked. I dropped out of University and thought it would be over, because I still believed I was being followed. I hotboxed my car and I heard the voices again and became convinced that it was Voice to Skull Stalker Technology with Microwaves or something, and that real people were reading my thoughts somehow and seeing everything I could see. The voices would scream at me, saying horrible things about me, threatening to kill me.. painfully. I’m not sure how I kept my sanity but I took it day by day and now I’m at a point of understanding it was all in my head. Even though there was no information online, except the V2K conspiracies, I’m glad now to see people talking about this. Reading about how young men are more likely to experience etc. gives me relief that this is a mental illness. I still smoke weed lol and I don’t hear them very often anymore, and the voices only really bother me when my self esteem is low. If i question the things they say about me, and reflect on my positive attributes, then they don’t scare me as much. I know they don’t have any power beyond their vicious lies. I don’t think what I’ve done is a good idea though, the experience is so vividly real it’s hard to believe/comprehend if you’ve never experienced it before. Please seek help if you think you may be experiencing psychosis/schizophrenia/paranoia. ❤ you are more than this illness and it doesn’t have to define you.

My family and I were huge weed advocates, well known in our community and I was an edible maker and baker. In 2012, I had migraines after a CAD that almost killed me. I wanted off opioids, son and husband used weed and many physicians, psychiatrists, media, Rogan-everyone said it was safe so I switched. It was so much stronger than I remember. I ended up developing suicidal depression a few years in and yep paranoia too. Hypermesis-intense vomiting was next. I only smoked at night before bed. Who knew? I was the first in the family to quit, and before knowing weed was the culprit to my mental health. Later, my son developed THC psychosis, which shocked my husband to quit in an instant. The experiences were terrifying. The hallucinations and paranoia were horrendous. I remember my husband and I sobbing in cars as we searched for his body after he ran out of the house barefoot and disappeared. He ran 15 miles down a highway. This as college graduate, a world class athlete, a mentor. He thought he was using something safe and nonaddictive. Three months into my own sobriety, I spent 2 nights in ER with suicidal ideation. I’m 61. It turns out it can take several months to repair the damage from THC. Weed? Are you kidding? Its a miracle drug! Snoop Dog! Son had more relapses, and eventually even alcohol triggered psychosis. We had minimal help and our friends who still believed weed didn’t cause it thought we were exaggerating. Today, most of them realize they were wrong. I researched from Harvard to Cambridge, contacted neuroscientists about what they were working on to circumvent cravings, neural damage, and schizophrenia from THC, etc. The big players are currently pure CBD oil in high milligram, the ketogenic diet and fitness. And everyone needs more B-complex. I’m researching red light therapy but can’t comment on it yet. The CBD oil was a big player for my sons brain. And sugar? Just google what it does to your brain for yourself. I’m so grateful my sons’ alive. I’m so angry at myself for not realizing high THC was neurologically deadly sooner. I love my son more than my own life…. The guilt is hard to live with. Being clean of it, being fit and witnessing my son healthier, with his new fiancé -whose anti-weed-dulls the blade a bit. Not much though. I made a-lot of bad karma ignorant or not. I’m finishing my degree in Pscyh research, sharing my story, and being accountable. I smell weed billowing out of cars every time I go for a run. The scent used to put a giggle in me, now its like a punch in the face. Finally, Ya’ll might wanna follow the money trail on whose making the most money off of weed sales and antipsychotics these days. I won’t spoil the surprise. Thank you Laura for Johnnys’ Ambassadors webpage, thank you Dr. Huberman, Doc Amen and thank you Russel Brand for your book on sobriety. But, I wish I’d never needed you.

I've had cannabis-induced psychosis a couple of times. The horrible thing is not only the psychosis itself, but also the depression afterwards, partly I would say from the anti-psychotic medicine. This made me want to smoke weed again and going in the same rabbithole again. Even after the second time I was like okay maybe if I smoke occasionaly, like once every 2 months, I'll be probably fine. But no 3rd psychosis, when I had 3rd time psychosis the psychiatrist wants to push me to keep taking the anti-psychotic medication for life. For people who don't know, anti-psychotic medication kind of turns you into a zombie, numb to everything, feeling very depressed, I also had a weird symptom that I couldn't sit still and would just be walking all the time all through the day, like a restless zombie. I never smoked weed again, but I did continue smoking. In the mental hospital it was normal to smoke, a lot of patiënts were smoking. Apart from the 1st time I had no issues with being in a mental hospital. Little did I know nicotine can also cause psychosis. So I had 4th time psychosis. So everybody who reads this and has had a psychosis, I would advise them to quit smoking. The more often you've had psychosis, the more likely you will be seen as schizophrenic and they kinda want to push you on anti-psychotic meds for the rest of your life.

@@FC-wq8jf I understand it man. You've all the right to be scared. Not only is psychosis a scary thing, but the medication you get is scary too. Most of time you've got no choice, because suppose you refuse to take medication, when you get an episode they will just pin you down with 4 people and inject it in your butt. Using weed as anti anxiety/depression medication is bad man. For me it took around a year after my psychosis is over to get back to my normal self/life again. If this is her 1st psychosis the doctors will usually slowly wean her off the anti-psychotics once she is recovered. It will be a year of hell for her. I suffer a bit from anxiety and depression too, but I know if I smoke weed it might make me happy for a while, but I finally end up in a situation MUCH worse. The problem is also when you hit a depression so bad that you're only wish is just to feel happy for a while, it's not easy to quit or to not start again. I hope she'll never smoke anymore.

@@FC-wq8jf I understand your scare man, tell your girl to stop dabbing/vaping/smoking whatever man and good luck on the healing proces. I wish this info was available 14 years ago when my son went through cannabis induced psychosis. He went on to experiment with every drug known to man only to die of an overdose 3 months ago. Cannabis induced psychosis is a real thing. He then tried meth, that was the drug that made him schizophrenic He was medicated for years but being an addict just couldn’t stop using street drugs. In my mind. His problem started with cannabis. Not all brain chemistries are the same. Some of us can smoke or get high till we’re mumbling and not become psychotic. Others of us should never ever ever go near the stuff. Had I only known.

this happened to my boyfriend recently, and he still hasn't moved away, even though it's been about 5 days. I'm very scared, he's changed, it seems to me that he's getting better, but sometimes he has paranoia attacks and I get so scared that it's schizophrenia and he'll have to live on pills all his life. he's been smoking weed since he was 15, now he's 18. we smoked weed every day for six months, and I sometimes noticed signs of paranoia during that period, but it didn't seem serious to me. but recently we tried to move to New York, and it turned out very unsuccessfully. before moving, we reduced our marijuana consumption and smoked 1-2 times a week. and when we were in New York, it so happened that we smoked for 2 or 3 days in a row. and then the fuck started. he became terribly paranoid, he said that everyone was looking at him, that the police were going to take him away, that some drugs had been put in his cigarette. as a result, he got to the emergency hospital, but stayed there for only a day, the doctor let him go and said that everything would be fine if he didn't smoke anymore. but it's been 4 days since we got back to his parents, and he's still acting weird. he has such a lost look and sometimes has bouts of paranoia, and he still denies that he had cannabis psychosis in New York. he says that he feels not in reality and I can see in his eyes that this is so. I really hope that he will be able to return to normal, but God, I'm so scared. we don't have money or insurance to go to the doctor, we are emigrants and don't even know English well enough. I just try to believe in the best, but every time I read the stories of people who, even after a year, have barely recovered from psychosis or are now suffering from schizophrenia, I get so scared....

Man i would love to share my story and be a part of this community but i am still struggling with leaving cannabis behind completely. It has given me a lot throughout my life and also taken so very much from me. A very tough place to constantly live in. But i am proud to have finally broken my all day every day habit this past year after a post rehab relapse in 2016 led back to all day every day use and am now using “moderately” as they would say for almost the first time ever in my cannabis use experience. It was one of the biggest battles of my life to finally get through those withdrawals without relapsing at least until those symptoms had totally faded over the course of a month and a half. Before that the longest was a week before i tapped excluding the year and a half i was sober in rehab. I still get feelings often that the pain i go through sometimes during the use and sometimes during detox isn’t worth it but man my brain wants to think about the good times so much despite the canyon of pain and torture it has put me through. The true angel on one shoulder devil on the other. As someone who has been through a 12 step accredited rehab program successfully i appreciate this channel so much. It's so good to hear this :) My marijuana-induced psychosis occurred some 50-years ago during the early 70s. Just like Ethen said, I loved it and soon became addicted. What's interesting is that at the time, THC content was only about 3%. My hunch is that this occurred, because I was high 24-7 for 2-years strait, ages 23 and 24. I won't detail how I was able to recover, at least in part (no one knew anything about this back then), and have had a rather successful life, considering. The worst aspect is depression, which was 24-7 until the advent of modern antidepressants. In order to remain "normal," I now have to take three antidepressants, two at maximum daily dosage. I also regularly see a therapist and a psychiatrist. At the outset, regarding the hallucination aspect, I saw glowing, writhing snakes living in my brain. They were even there when I'd shut my eyes. I was lucky to get four hours of sleep a night. I was also frightened by bright colors. Ethan mentions a 10-year aspect too, which is about the time these hallucinations took to disappear. I have memory issues too, especially concerning the now. The good news is that both past and present memory is improving.

It took 10 years in your case to stop having hallucinations?? That's horrible I've developed psychosis because of weed three years ago now and it's a nightmare, how did you manage?
@georgefspicka5483 Жыл бұрын
You're right. It was horrible. I couldn't even sleep because though I had my eyes closed, it was like I was seeing writhing, burning snakes in my mind. Even though it gradually ended after 10 years, I was left with mental health problems, especially this depression. I survived early on because of 1) I created a mantra that I'd repeat to myself, "Hang on. Things will get better."@@alexdenton6586 2) Probably even more, was that I had a caring, loving wife who tolerated my moods. It wasn't anything special, just the way she was naturally. 3) About a year later, I became obsessed with becoming a jazz pianist and composer. The concentration was so intense, which was good, because it turned my mind away from the horror. I also had therapy, which helped, but the real improvement came when modern antidepressants came on the scene. I take Effexor XR and Wellbutrin at maximum daily dosage, and a 1/2 dose of Trazodone. I also see a therapist. I think it's also important to believe in oneself. I can't tell you about how many times I thought of killing myself during the earlier years, but I made it through.

It sounds like you HAD a psychosis and because you stopped smoking you gave your brain the chance to recover but some delusions and hallucinations was lingering for months though with insight about that something was wrong. That's important for people to know that you will have a much smaller chance to recover, or to even get the insight needed to recover, if you keep smoking. So you were lucky that you pretty quickly gained insight because if you didn't then why would you stop smoking? In your brain the delusions is real and then you can't logically connect why it happens because it's real for you! I'm happy that you made it Also no, it doesn't help with taking your child to a mental institution for a day or to a prison of they are criminals etc. I was in the mental institution for a while when I was younger and I saw with my own two eyes what psychosis was but as a kid you're thinking "Oh well, he's schizophrenic and I'm not so f this"

I vaped weed, heavily, most nights for about 3 years. There was a few times when my mind kind of blanked out and I would babble incoherently. That scared me enough to quit. I noticed also that weed was making me more irritable. It's been about 4 months since I quit. Right after I stopped, I wasn't feeling much of anything aside from anger, and my concentration was shot. There were also some nightmares and other vivid dreams. Now, four months later, a lot of the withdrawal symptoms have dissipated. I don't think my concentration is 100% back, but it is much better. I like to read and write, so this is a big deal to me. My anger has dissipated a lot - I don't fly off the handle like I did. I also started exercising regularly, and this has been tremendously helpful. I feel good about my improvement. I'm not saying I'll never use weed again, but I'll never be a heavy user again, that's certain. I felt like I was turning into an asshole.

I've lived through cannabis / stress induced psychosis twice in my life. Both times I wasn't aware of what was happening to me and experienced really scary, spiritual, demonic things. The second and most recent time put me into rehab for 6 months and has left me picking up the many pieces of my destroyed life. The rehab I went to is known as the toughest, strictest rehab in Australia. It's Christian based and I chose to admit myself there because I truly believed that Jesus was calling me away from my family and everything I knew for a better life as a disciple. There's much more to it but that's an important part of it, was the religious delusions and weird synchronicities that felt so deliberate and impossible to ignore. I was a heavy user for most of 6-7 years and have now been sober 7 months. I will never, ever EVER touch marijuana again. Or drugs of any kind, even alcohol. Once you go through those types of experiences, it completely changes you and is not worth the potential ruin it can bring you and your loved ones. STAY SOBER. X

Because of one scary hallucination i stopped getting into Spirituality. My doctor had warned me not to do any intoxication when I go to college. But the turning point was when I smoked weed in college even though I was advised not to. It took only 4-5 incidents of smoking weed to unleash a group of 🦗 crickets making sounds in my head. It was so loud i would shut my ears but they would still be loud I could not sleep properly for 7 days. I would get only 2-3 hours of sleep each day and as soon as I would open my eyes the sounds would be back. I took a bus and travelled 7 hours to my hometown. There I felt safe and finally slept well. I noticed wrinkles on my face and some of my hair had become white. I had aged few years in those 7 days! I hugged my mom and cried. I had to tell my parents . Thankfully I did not take medication because I live in India and we have Ayurvedic treatment here. I still hear the sound of 🦗 but it is lower in volume only 20% of it. I can relate to you so much. I gave my monthly tests while I was hearing those unstoppable sounds and i graduated in first division. I'm proud of how far I've come. My cousin who smokes weed developed tinnitus this year and I realise how harmful weed is worse is the propaganda that supports weed. Im still scared about developing schizophrenia but I'm thankful for whatever I have. I have realised that life is supposed to be lived by following certain rules. Each individual is different and they have their own boundaries. Failure and success is a part of life health and sickness as well . But the people who follow the rules even when they're healthy are the ones who gain happiness.

You should know, from someone of a scientific background, that the issues you "unlocked" with weed, were there already always, the weed just made you unprepared relax, and that mental block to those problems, were naturally made as a very young child, but weed gave enough breif introspection, that you noticed again after so long not remembering, and you could not block to ignore it again, until you redirected and relaxed your mind again, sadly only to degrees.

@@eyeswideopen7777 yes, to a measurable scientific equivalent, that people are no longer prepared before for. Certain strains of flower etc are called "stimulants" for more than just recreational temporary effects. Then these people blame the natural actually helpful medicines.

@@stephendekoning802 LOOK, I have 25 years in Psychiatric and 2 degrees. I also have 3 tramatic brain injuries from a energetic childhood. This developed into Bipolar and I could not tolerate alcohol. The thing is that people say some people can't smoke weed or they will get psychosis. I tested THC and if you keep to a gummy bear or 6 percent for anxiety. BUT if you smike a joint it runs at 45 mgs to 90 mgs. THEN , your headed for trouble and psychosis. Remember , a little morphine can help with pain in a car accident and too much without pain can lead to addiction and death. So, be moderate and stop saying that THC and CANNABIS will cause psychosis. Addiction to weed is more habbit forming and you used it for coping with anxiety and or social anxiety. WHEN,....you move to higher drugs then death will now be a new reality.

I had a bad weed trip after smoking what we called chronic back then alone at age 13. I thought I was going to hell and heard a tornado of voices in my head. It ruined me psychologically. I didn't even know if I was still really alive or not. I remember asking my friend if this was hell and he was like Blake, wtf??? I just hid the wound from everyone and went through life. @EveryBrainMatters thanks for asking. Yeah, it was terrifying. At times, I've completely forgotten about it and lived well. But there have been times I've felt completely separated from everything like I really did die that day. Like I'm incapable of the feelings I used to have. Like my senses have been dulled. I have fleeting moments where what seems like a feeling I've completely forgotten about does come back. It's weird. Like amnesia, and for a moment, I remember, and then the feeling is gone. I used to think that one day I'll be healed, and it will just take time. It's been 25 years. Something has happened recently that brought me here. Not from weed. At the moment, I'm not doing well at all.

Not only is it possible, I’ve done it before. Now look at my pfp. Psychosis is a more than dominable condition to experience. I had to work on myself though, but I did come to accept that while I’m naturally capable academically that I already had the propensity towards depression and laziness even before my smoking. What anxiety inducing or stressful tasks do you currently undertake? For example I like to rock climb and lift weights as physical challenges. While I’ve had my ups and downs with university, though I did at school too before I ever smoked, I am still getting my degree and I have a job. Addiction to anything isn’t usually good, but it’s a bit more manageable when you have other stuff you care about too. Please don’t allow yourself to feel defeated, lazy and anxious just because you smoke. Find true confidence that even if you hear voices you know you’re the guy and that other people’s sh** stinks too.

Zol9ft is a mental inhibitor, so your mental illness you had before the people who encouraged your psychosis blamed on mj, that natural mj helped realization of (aside I'm sure from all the toxic chemicals dipped/injected etc with it), is just being suppressed from you noticing significantly, and sadly obviously your family etc are as well, by how they never really acted upon your destructive time you associate and blame mj, when it is obviously a much deeper before mj issue, you are being used for though for someone to profit unfortunately from, and as an old scare tactic, which is simple in fooling unknowledgeable people apparently. It is sad people are still believing and taken advantage of in these ways, as I can see real suffering in you obviously good people. I've seen much of this in my old general and especially youth ministries.

I have had episodes. I'm not sure if it was psychotic but it definitely was scary. I would have these nanoseconds of blackouts during conversations to the point that i was afraid that i wouldn't get out of the blackout loops, and then i would be admitted. Like my brain was literallyyyy tripping in and out of consciousness, and ppl are talking to me, and I'm not responding. I was freaking my friends out. Freaking out crying, saying, "i don't wanna be committed!" Over and over, and "when will this stop?!" "Wat if it never stops! Wat if im stuck like this forever!" It was so bad. They kept telling me to relax, ride it out, and just go with it. She gave me a bowl of ravioli, lol. I ate most of it, but it had no taste. I was still tripping and I said fuck this I'm going to sleep! Kept waking up, still high, back to sleep lol. Needless to say my friend said i ruined her high lol. I've had issues like this after. Not nearly as extreme. I definitely over smoked cuz i smoked it like a cig. Just L to the face. Of course im like let me experiment smh. And i still do. Maybe it was the strain? Because i would have good effects as well so i became interested in narrowing it down. I only smoke socially. Most times i would experience paranoia, bursts of unnecessary behavior that I couldn't control. I'd blackout, come back, and i realized that i had done something weird and embarrassing. I had conversations in my head, then not knowing if it was a thought or if i said it out loud. Because if i said it out loud, it would definitely be weird and judged. Paranoid that my friends were staring at me from the corner of my eye. I would be a mess. But just the other night, i went to a get-together and smoked, and i felt great! But i have noticed that if i drink alcohol beforehand, the effects are way less dramatic, and im guessing because it is a depressant, so im not so in my head or tightly wound. Im not in any way saying to do this, just voicing my experience.

it is not fair that cannabis is illegal in many places while alcohol and cigarettes are legal. There are a number of reasons for this, including: * **Historical reasons:** Cannabis has been illegal for much longer than alcohol or cigarettes. The first laws prohibiting cannabis were passed in the United States in the early 1900s, largely due to racism and fear-mongering. Alcohol and cigarettes, on the other hand, have been legal for centuries. * **Economic reasons:** The alcohol and tobacco industries are very powerful and they have a lot of influence over governments. They have lobbied against cannabis legalization for many years, and they have donated money to politicians who oppose legalization. * **Social reasons:** There is still a lot of stigma around cannabis use. Some people believe that cannabis is a harmful drug and that it should not be legalized. Others worry that cannabis legalization will lead to an increase in drug use among young people. It is important to remember that the legal status of cannabis is constantly changing. In recent years, there has been a growing movement to legalize cannabis, and more and more states are doing so. It is possible that cannabis will be legal in all 50 states within the next few years. As for why people drink alcohol and smoke cigarettes, there are a number of reasons. Some people enjoy the effects of these substances. Others use them to cope with stress or boredom. And still others use them because they are addicted. It is important to remember that alcohol and cigarettes are both harmful substances. They can lead to a number of health problems, including cancer, heart disease, and liver damage. They can also impair judgment and coordination, and they can increase the risk of accidents and injuries.
