Hey there John! Nice to see some more long games on lichess! I've always loved these videos :-) PS, I got the '100 endgames you must know' course on chessable, I'm glad I did! So far it has been very instructive and helpful :-D

How are you coming along with it? I'm considering the courses by Yasser Seirawan, the strategy one in particular. John is an excellent presenter, though I feel Yaz's courses would be the most valuable to me. (1300 bullet / 1800 classical) I so nearly bought it, but received my mastercard statement today. It was not good.

Thanks very much for talking us through the Rat Defense. I'm confronted with it quite often when playing with White and I struggle with it every time. The strategical and tactical ideas showed by you are really helpful, as well as the tip how to avoid it at all (2. Nf3). You are my favourite chess streamer/KZbinr and I try to watch every live stream of yours (which is a bit difficult when living in Europe). Thx again for your work.

The proper 'rat' position that John gets here is one of my all-time favorites! I mainly struggle if they decline the rat with 1. d4 d6 2. Nf3 which likely will lead to a pirc defense, which i find incredibly hard to play as black. Sometimes I also have had huge struggles in the actual rat if they play early pressure along the diagonal with an early f4.

Move 14, on the reply to Rd8 why couldn't we just not take the Knight and play Ke8 instead?
@DarkSideChess3 жыл бұрын
Thats what I was wondering. I guess the threat of exposing the King to the rooks is pretty big , but you're up material and the queens are off the board. I would have taken the opponent's sac.
@hthought4 жыл бұрын
Hi John, I am kinda curious, why were you contemplating the move Bf7 ? I thought Be7 looked more natural if I were to move a bishop(although its bad after the knight jumps with check). Did something scare you in the position ? What made you want to push that bishop back ? Also why Kb8 ? Why move the king far from the important squares in the center ? :/

Hi John--noobie question here, but since d5 was protected by the pawn on c6 and the bishop on e6, why not take the knight on move 17 with one of those defenders?
@anujkratos4 жыл бұрын
Im thinking if the black pawn takes the knight on d5, then white pawn takes that pawn leading to discovered attack on the king. The king moves and the pawn takes the bishop on e6 with an attack on knight on f7.
@cjsummers4 жыл бұрын
@@anujkratos Yeah, he loses a bishop either way, but if he takes with his light square bishop, and white takes back with the pawn, isn't that better for black? Doesn't black get another pawn in compensation within a couple more moves?

Continued thanks for the 15-min games. At my maybe 1000 rating I can't pick up much from speed chess. Also FYI, at my level having no row and column numbers makes it noticeably harder to follow. Since it would be simple for the Lichess board to have them, I'm sure that's been beat into the ground. Just my 2 cents.
