@@heavymetalATC it connected the dots between many of the isolated crumbs of knowledge I had and added a lot of context to processes I thought I knew. Been looking at all my analog gear with fresh excitement and that's really cool cause equipment is better being used and loved instead of gathering dust in shelf purgatory. Thanks for the effort!

Wow! thank you so much Attakai. I must admit I do wish it would have gone that big. The majority of the views are from the first day. I put quite a bit of time and effort into this one but the algorithm Robots are not very kind to a channel of this size. Thanks again maybe things will start popping off I took a break for a few months and now I'm ready to hit it full steam and I just applied for monetization so maybe that will help. Thanks again.

LOL I guess if I had to say what I was doing wasnt actually a good impression of each person but mostly just a modified version of poking fun at my friend Craig from Essex. He sounds almost like Harry Potter Hahaha. After talking with me a lot. He has learned to do a Southern American accent Spot on. Like scary good, I would never know it wasn't authentic. Either way thanks again for the kind words and I am so happy that you enjoyed the video.

Thanks for watching and taking the time to write a comment Barden. I suppose you are right. Its not like the first track is actually controlling the compression on the second. Well kinda since its the same source but not in real time so you are correct. Its not side chain processing. The guitar isn't controlling the drums or vice versa. Thank you for the correction and kind words. I guess I just had a brain fart on that one. I'm glad you liked the video.

It's so frustrating because I always like the subject of what he's going on about, but he takes interesting stuff and makes it super annoying and it feels abusive. Cool video. How do you synch your tape drums to your DAW drums? I tried running one of our song's DAW drums into the Tascam 424 Portastudio. No problem with the transfer, sounds cool on tape. Then when I re-import the tape tracks into the DAW the tape speeds up quite a bit before the end of a 3-minute song creating this delay that is pretty unpleasant. Unless I run the entire track into the tape machine and then back into the DAW, I don't know if there's a way to fix this.
@heavymetalATC
@heavymetalATC 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to type out such a detailed and intelligent comment. As you saw in the video it was a decently short clip so it just lined up but... I would think maybe you could record the drum track onto tape 4-8 bars at a time maybe even with over lap and peice it together with fading if needed but im sure that could leave some artifacts either desirable or not? also you may be able to use your daw to time stretch the drums in 1-4-8 bar sections or as a whole. Ive never really ran a full drum track on tape and back? I usually work from in the box well for the last 10-12 years no live drums so I do a lot of stretching and jogging and copy paste? I see how this could be a problem, im sure you can find a way to jog/shuffle in the daw but outside of that maybe changing the cap,resistor on the motor in the tape player which is kinda crazy and would take extreme math or an adjustment pot and trial and error... or maybe the same thing done with a variac? I hope that gives you some types of ideas but I would probably try to do it in the DAW.

Also you can use a tape recorder as a lofi sampler by recording a single kick, snare, hi hat, synth note, guitar note or bass note into the tape player. Then you record that note back into your daw. You can use this effect to dirty up a keyboard sound that's too digital or give some gain to your drum kits.

Thank you for watching and taking the time to leave such a detailed and useful comment Desperadow. Great tip absolutely useful. I have also found that letting something play out into the room and rerecording it just like a simple cheezy reamp and then fading it in with the original will also help a lot on digital sounding synths. I heard that Depeche Mode used to play their synths through old tube guitar amps like fender twin reverb way across the room for this reason. Thanks again bro great tip.

Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to comment Garry. Hell yeah bro, I feel like people are too uptight and try to do everything by the book. A hot mix is often just the ticket, especially when printing to tape its like an auto limiter. I watched an interview where Andrew Scheps said when he was recording 99 problems for Jay-Z he took a screw driver and opened the tape machine and turned the bias pot up so he could hit the tape even louder. Thanks again Garry. I love studio talk and anyone who isn't afraid to break some rules for a result.

i got a radioshack dictaphone on ebay the other day. on my daw interface it has these "insert" channels. What would happen if I use a insert with a split cable and patch the out from reaper using reainsert to the tape recorder input, and the output from the tape recorder back to inseert return. I know that the tape has the ability to monitor while recording. am I even getting the tape sound doing that or just running my signal through the the tapes mic preamp??? haven't tried it yet, but thinking about it,,probably just the pre?? Tried recording to tape and it does make a dry guitar signal way more interesting..kinda worked good with a cab sim on the end too..funky sounding. nice vid cheers
@heavymetalATC
@heavymetalATC 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching and taking the time to write this detailed and articulate comment Raindogred. I am almost completely sure that would just be using the preamp inside the tape player. Which could also be useful Im sure if you played around with it maybe send drums into it very hot and turn the volume down on the out and saturate that transistor or opamp in there it might be the magic box, the cab sim idea on the out is pretty awesome too. I have put some thought into maybe using a guitar pedal on the way end and blending the tape with maybe a delay, reverb or chorus on it back into the signal for lo-fi effects send. But yes I think the live monitor is just the preamp. Great thinking though, you obviously put some thought into this. Hey its been ages, Id loveto know what kind of results you got using the tape deck with your music?

sorry to break in. but the 4 track cassette recorder & the great sound that i get when i run my guiar thru the dedicated guitar only input jack. our host with the most & you both know why that happened. you referenced in above text & clem. said it. i was 12yrs old in 1980 when it seemed a lot of artist from most genre's were all on the same lyrical topic. not all the artist , though... one of my fav. bands was dealing with a band mate's death & was coming back to work in thier funeral clothes. and john anderson was clearly , but prolly not safe, was checking charlette's oil right there on the porch swing, and joan jett was composing love songs about her job.but these other guys were all into self pleasure. michael jackson was "beating it".. our not so Quiet riot rockers was banging thier heads. jagger & keith was shaking it up. john waite had to of been doing something he wrote his ex that he wasnt missing here. duran duran wrote, prolly later on, talking about edging. with the reflex. cindy lauper wasnt into headbanging.... so she just bop , bop , ohhhh, shebop. british bill idol, just listen to his record collection & dance with his self.. it was crazy. my mom had just moved us to the bottom half of our state closer to her sisters and mom. and i lived within range of a clear FM signal that was strong enough that it came in in stereo. our state bigges Rock station. but it was static'y and crackily like the south of the state needed to de-oxit thier pot.'s. i miss the rockers, tom petty, styx, floyd, kiss, uncle ted. the freaking eagles, paul rodgers and his company , i could still hear foreiner but they started playing love songs , and brian may was making great sounds every 5th song they released, areosmith had took a break or something, really. steve perry made a love song, who else, floyd had not put anything new, my young cousin was all into this one song that was great. but bocephus wasnt rocking then he was surving new york city & the mississippi river water level disappering. willie made millions & became ledgend with a song about his job & he loved it.. kida like joan did. i literally heard like from 50% of the songs from my home northward in 1979. were new release material. yeah i know we had the disco.. but naww. funkytown ??? the bee gees. that had groovey bass lines and the had the vocal harmony this down. then maurice is hitting the high "c" soprano notes. but .. naw. bob seger and his coors lite band great music. good for road trip until you take one down lower state and the year numbers on paper chart on wall & everyone took a break .. some made love song or two by themself. ohh. it was a shock. it changed quickly, malcolm and his small brother had another friend that could sing. and he could work with them , but be respectful. . and they came back and rock bands started showing up . british deaf predator cats brought on the heartache. the ratt's showed us how to lay it down & round and round. kevin bacon learned to dance as did the flashdancer . ole jackson boy got some more scarier songs and knocked a girl up or she just claimed he did but it still unknown. the eagles made it back from thier long run but they didnt hang out. so it was a good thing that they were a supergroup & smuggled some dirty laundry the rocky mountian way. and hey. we had the cars ! we had a group that i never heard in my life an dont care if i ever again do. thier singer really tries . just watch his neck tendons and he really tries... but all i can see in my mind is a boomstand for him trying to help an extra large loaf that had became un malleable. help it with vocal vibrations & i think it musta worked. his large colon would contract on time to emphasize key words .... i was (cramp) BOOOOORRRRNN . in the yus ahh. . yeah. this took way to long to tel why im a 80's fan motley, poison, jovi, twisted snider, tom kiefer, tesla, and on and on. zackwylde. helped oz into the new .aerosmith resurfaced. tom petty . scorpions, disco duck died, paul simon helped do much he had the world focus on a video game. and we all was glad to be lied to by madonna . 1st time my ass. lol hey im out gotta go. latter. 👋🏻👋🏻👋🏻

Thank you for watching and taking the time to write a comment Paul. I have been wanting to put a speed control on one of these for a long while but I can't find one at a thrift store that works well and that I also have the heart to hack up... I wanted to put cv control to one and a keyboard and use it like a mono chamberlain or melotron. I love watching the guys that scratch tape decks like records.. that is a trip.

How do you record the track onto tape with a Scarlet 2i2 using Reaper?
@heavymetalATC
@heavymetalATC 9 ай бұрын
Youll have to route the sound out of one of the outputs in your daw or in the scarlet software that looks like a mixer and has routing for outputs... you can use like the headphone or monitor out since you only have 2 channels and plug that into the tape player. I hope that helps its hard as heck to explain some of this stuff halfway coherently. hahahaha!

@heavymetalATC
@heavymetalATC 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment Bring MeSunshine. It was not my guitar. I am a bit too cheap to buy a Les Paul. I do find it unfortunate that players are so stuck in the past that Gibson cannot offer a version of the guitar without that design flaw. It is an artifact left over from the days of the lute when you needed the angle to keep wooden peg tuners from slipping. I do have an 80s Epiphone S-310 Strat style guitar that came with the Explorer style headstock and it broke just like that. I replaced it with a vintage fender neck and now its good to travel and survive the occasional slide down the wall or amp and bounce off the floor... and has. Thanks again.

@@heavymetalATC Ha ha. I've never had a Les paul, either. A few years back I had a job where I had enough money to buy one, but stopped myself at the last minute and bought something just as playable for a fraction of the price. And knowing my luck with toppling guitars, I made the right decision. Good luck with the channel, man
