Recreating Ariana Grande’s Met Gala Dress but with Toilet Paper

Surprisingly this only required 2.5 rolls of toilet paper.
I have also failed to be a decent human and acknowledge Vera Wang (and team)’s marvellous work on designing and creating the original gown.

Some Important Information you might have missed: -As per the description, this gown consumed approximately 2.5 rolls of toilet paper. -As per the epilogue of this video, the dress is at the moment being systematically disassembled as it is reused as actual toilet paper. -The toilet paper used was from the single 6-pack purchased the week previously, my first toilet paper purchase since before NY went into lockdown. There was plenty more on the shelf. Further toilet paper purchases are not expected to be required for another 2-3 months. No hoarding has been committed for the making of this video. -This video is not intended to promote excessive and wasteful consumption of resources. As with anything we buy or make, one must consider the continuing useful life of all materials involved. We cool now? (If you're just out here looking for excuses to hate for personal enjoyment, carry on then; we *are* in part here for your entertainment, after all, and this video admittedly doesn't provide much educational value.)

The amount of TP used is clearly not significative, and as a mean of fun I would say it was quite inexpensive. Also, TP is a material widely used in every school for the costume contest in bonding activities as Students week and even in Bachelorette parties to make a mocking bridal dress.

I LOVED THIS! Admittedly, my first reaction was one of shock - the seeming wanton wastage of a scarce resource (toilet paper). As the video continued, I realized the social commentary aspect of your choice of material. I may be reading more into this than you intended, but to me it reflects the spirit of excess & waste in the modern times. On the one hand we have the glorification of things like the Met Gala - exclusive, over the top & out of reach of the average Joe or Jane in society. On the other hand there is the addiction in society to 'fast fashion' & a 'disposable' lifestyle - toilet paper seems a fantastic medium to illustrate this as it is the epitome of disposable. There may also be parallels between modern fashion & toilet paper - easily flushed away with no lasting value or quality, or originality/ creativity. There is no longer any 'make do & mend' - we tend to buy new cheaper clothing, and fill landfills with increased waste. As you pointed out, the use of scarce, expensive material - cloth of gold etc - is normal in fashion. And toilet paper has become valuable as a result of Covid19 induced shortages. So your choice of material is fitting. This video has huge shock value, though I'm sure you didn't intend that. Fashion has long been used as a medium of social & political commentary, so I applaud this video. I found it very interesting.

I seen this done as Mummy Costumes made from TP during Halloween in the 90s , and a Bridal Shower game in the 2000s where the Party members made dresses out of TP. I've heard when life hands you lemons, make lemonade. I really never identified as life has handed me a lot at times, but never lemons. When my daughter was eight, she needed angel wings to dance onstage, so I made "couture" wings out of coffee filters because that's what life gave me at the time. They were just as stunning as if they had arrived from FAO Swartz. I'm having such a tough time in lockdown. I'm immunocompromised, and I won't be going anywhere for a while. I have put down my sewing, frustrated as I can't go pick out the trimmings to complete my looks. Thank you for bringing to mind I don't need the perfect lace to create beautiful things. I just need what I already have, reimagined and reengineered. Thank you for reminding me of what couture is and what it is for. I agree with Ms. Hay. This is a fantastic couture creation, and it brought beauty into my life today. Now off to recreate a Worth gown from old linens......

I too am immuno-suppressed, but I feel much more positive, because early on, while all on social media were whimpering "boohoo I have nothing to do" I was taking my mountains of toxic meds & I realised that if anyone can get thru it's us, We've already survived heaps to get this far & we know the value & fragility our own lives well enough not to be flippant about following the rules.
