rule of thumb on fancy-ass foods. if it has gold in it, its a rip-off. gold has no flavor, it has zero nutritional value. there is a reason professional tasters for companies use gold or gold plated spoons to sample flavor tests, because the spoon does not provide anything or take away from anything. gold is completely neutral and inert. so if gold is added to a food, its purely for the bragging right of saying it has gold in it and marking up the price, nothing more. some expensive things are delicious, some foods require exotic ingredients to work and therefore quality will cost more than cheap processed things, but at some point you are just adding crap to make it sound fancy. caviar is very often added just for pretentious mark-up, but it does have a bold flavor, so at least you can say in a recipe that it adds something to the dish, maybe good or bad, but it does something that only IT does and thats saying more than a flavorless nutritional-void gold trick. lobster is delicious, truffle is extremely flavorful and rare, wagu beef is a difficult product to create for a specific reason and there is some points to the chef making the thing, but caviar is most often just hype and gold is the most worthless food ingredient in existence. i dont care how rich i was, if i order food and it comes with gold flakes, i'm complaining, because someone is trying to con me.

Agree. It seems such a cheating way to increase the cost of a dish. No actual value to the eating of the food, taste, texture, ect. Just for show and to be able to create something crazy expensive. I mentally subtract the gold leaf cost from every "most expensive foods" list.

The reason so many expensive foods taste bad is because the price is all in the ingredients. Notice how they consistently have very similar ingredients. Some sort of special meat, caviar, gold leaf, and oftentimes truffle. They don't put effort into making a flavor that pops, they don't put effort into making it taste unique or special, they just pile all the expensive rich people stuff together and then make it super expensive and wait for people to assume the price means a good flavor. Of course this doesn't always apply, but usually with things like what they ate in this video, that's how it is.

Yes, don’t waste the good, expensive ingredients by just piling then onto something. Foie gras, caviar, truffle and other expensive ingredients (other than gold) can be really good if prepared correctly!
