The odd thing about this series is that I am a hobbyist woodworker...but I find myself still wanting a Ranalah wheeling machine...I would never use one, and I know I don't have the skillset required, I would probably end up with the thinnest fingers in the UK if I tried, but this level of enthusiasm and relentless pursuance of a dream is infectious. Good luck with this venture and I hope that sales go through the roof.

Last week I watched a KZbin video made by Harry’s Garages which showed one of his cars being restored. The body turned out to require various pieces to be made by an expert and one of the machines he used was an English Wheel. There are many real experts out there who need to have such machines and I’m sure once you advertise what you have and what can be provided you will not only be able to satisfy their needs but in doing so keep those skills going and hopefully with classic car restorers increasing get some people to enjoy being able to set up their own workshop. Dom it’s a job well done.

Used to do a lot of dental castings lots of gold and Palladium Platinum, my great-uncle taught me how to cast chromium Cobalt. I love the process and watching you go through it the attention to detail is so critical. My favorite castings were gold inlays and onlays. Upon inserting in the mouth the fits were so nice in the margins could be burnished down to the Natural tooth surface. God bless you and your family

Great stuff! How about casting some mini RANALAH?? (Paperweight size)
@weevilinabox3 жыл бұрын
If you're not concerned about using traditional methods (i.e. casting) or the model being functional (for wheeling aluminum foil?), then a paperweight-sized one could be 3-d printed directly in metal. For a cast version, print in wax and use lost wax casting. I've even seen lost "wax" casting using more common 3-d printing plastics on KZbin.

So many people want a mini one! I need to work on this....

Funny I came across this now. I'm a CNC Machinist here in New Zealand and I'm just about to start machining some failry large aluminium castings (think a round cylinder about 530mm in OD hollow with structure inside plus two large ovals on the sides 180 degrees apart. Always like doing them (although I moan oh not these again!) because there is some precison machining and tolerances for depths that have to be calculated as the origin is from the middle of the casting. But the satisfaction of achieving the finished product (there are 5 to do) is exactly what I saw now with the lower cradle. All nicely machined and then sat with the rough cast one and the original. Awesome!
@boblawrence50113 жыл бұрын
You say there won’t be many people who needs a lower cradle, but I bet there will be an uptake of machines use once you get more parts cast. Good luck for the future.

Always asking myself how did they make the machines that made the machines. What really prompted me to comment was your explanation as to where your second Ranalah came from, Hooper Coach builders. I have a 1935 20/25 Rolls Royce limosine made by the coach builder Hooper. Do not know how big Hooper's were but would not expect them to have many english wheels. It just crossed my mind that your Ranalah may have been used to produced the coach building on my car. One day hope to visit but just north of Preston.

Yeah my new ones will have sharper corners etc for sure.. but the original has 80 years of use, so I bet that had square corners when it was new.. I am being careful to not put fake aged marks into the parts, dimensionally its bang on, its down to the new owner to make there own wear and tear.

This is amazing Dom, I use to spin metal which involves stretching and shrinking materials around a rotating jig or former, I'd love to own a Ranalah rolling machine. I've never used one, but 15 odd years of metal spinning experience you do develop a feel for different metals and that feel must be transferable to a rolling machine, mind you I have not been near a metal spinning lathe in 17 years so maybe I'm getting too wrapped up in the excitement of your project?
