littleredguitars2 yeah you’re terrible but great! I went with the same choice years ago when looking for a delonge tone. Grabbed the fd2 mosfet he has and use a tech 21 Oxford pedal. I used to do basically the same on my laptop with a guitar rig plugin back in 2010. Still a great tone. Cool to find you enjoy it as well! Cheers

What do you think would be the best way to get Tom's live sound from the untitled era? The Pepsi Smash show and the Letter to Elise cover still blow me the fuck away. Part of it is the way the distortion, feedback, and flanger all meld together

I liked this tone. It sounds really good with the 335. Id really like to see if you could toms tone from TOYPAJ or BCR. Around those times. It’s one of my favorites

Tom's new Blink tone was a bit misunderstood. People blamed it on the 335, and the VOX/Fenders. Which made ZERO sense, considering that his best tone IMO was like 2004. The part that blew my mind was that they just took the sound out of the power amp, didn't mic up the amps, and went straight through DIs into the PA. No cab or even cabinet emulation. I have zero idea why they thought that was a good idea, but ya know, whatever.

In the rig rundown his guitar tech says thet use cab simulators into DIs
@eldyko5 жыл бұрын
Pretty sure they drove the amps power sections pretty hard and they just used cab simulators which take a speaker load rather than micing cabs. It does make sense because they wanted to avoid having the vocal mic’s pick up the guitar sounds. I agree it’s misunderstood and in a lot of cases I preferred his Mesa/Marshall tones as well. I just felt like his vox/fender tones often weren’t loud or thick enough for big live shows.
@Andy-cz4xw3 жыл бұрын
he used Marshall and Mesa in 2004, but i still see your point

This was awesome, I've been trying to nail Tom's tone for quite a while now and this video was super useful. Could you show us the I Miss You tone live in Pepsi Smash and the earlier blink sounds like the Enema and TOYPAJ albums? This would be a really cool series to do.

Great vid, it's nice to hear the guitar tone without the drums, bass or vocals

Cool seeing a methodology vid on Tom’s guitar tone. From what I’ve read from some old Jerry Finn interviews, they’d primarily use Marshalls layered for top end and Mesa Boogies for low end (Enema/Toypaj) At least on high gain stuff. AvA stuff seemed to be all over the place. The War definitely sounds like an Orange layered with a Marshall. Clean AvA stuff is possibly Vox, as well as some of the medium gain stuff (Shove, Everything’s Magic, Moon as My Witness). Also, anyone not using an axefx, I think Finn mentioned recording the toypaj stuff with a condenser and a ribbon mic on each cab. For highs and lows again. Anyhow, just my 2 cents. Awesome vid dude 😎

I have a guitar with dirty fingers on it also. Would you start with the clean setting or something else on an amp like that? I have a bunch of hand me down pedals also

Hey Jon, great video. I love the tone. Also I had a question. I was thinking of getting something similar to axe fx like an IK Multimedia iRig Stomp. Since I have most of the software and know how to use it. However, I need to buy studio monitors to use and hear it at home.. Would you recommend 5” or 6” monitors? My room is roughly 14’ long and 10’ wide with no studio treatment. Thanks.
@littleredguitars26 жыл бұрын
i'm not sure which is "better". i'd assume the larger you go, the better bass response you'll probably get. i use 6" and i'm happy with mine.
