I went thru Boot Camp at San Diego the summer of ‘79. I turned 18 while I was there. Went on to do twenty great years globe trottingas a CTR. I “retired” at the ripe old age of 37, and was recruited into Federal service, from which I retired about three months ago. And now every day is Saturday. SO, all of you who are about to start this journey need to have faith in your shipmates, and especially have faith in yourselves. About three days in you’ll ask yourself “what have I done..”. Hang in there, keep your ears and eyes open, pay attention to detail. Before you know it you’ll be walking tall at graduation and heading off to A/C School. I envy you! P.S. Practice your handwriting! You’ll be issued stationary (look it up) to snail-mail out letters. So you may want to get a little address book, too.

I just graduated yesterday. Trust me when i say its easy. The toughest part is honestly the mental aspects. Missing home. Missing things you used to do like listening to music or playing video games. They'll yell at you and curse you out. You go down to the OOD (officer of the deck) to report when you're the roving security watch of your compartment. You get nervous and dont say the proper words. They look at you and call you curse words and that you're stupid. Dont let it get to you. At RTC they dont actually hate you. You didn't cause the world to end because you called a chief a petty officer. They know youre learning and dont understand everything. Just let them chew you out. Try again. if you get it right cool. If not they'll curse you out again. Just say no (rank) or yes (rank) or aye aye (rank). If i can do it. Trust me you can do it.

For those going to bootcamp you’ll see tons of comments here like “don’t take it personally” and “it’s all mental” and for the most part that’s all true but what your focus needs to be is that it truly is training. Every piece of what you learn here and your A-school will serve you well anywhere you go afterwards and it’s recommended you take note of what you’re given. From PT schedules, to shining your boots all the way to greeting an officer, nothing at all is just to get you through the day here, it’s to turn you into a sharp member of one of the worlds most powerful forces to ever exist in the history of mankind. Those who see it this way have a legendary future ahead of them. It’s been over a year since I graduated from here. Now , I serve on a nuclear powered Los Angeles class submarine waiting for absolutely anyone to try me or my country. Hooyah navy

I graduated a few days ago from boot camp. A few things you should know: 1. Don't let other recruits bother you so much. That is the most stressful thing about being in your compartment. 2. Try to sleep as much as possible and drink lots of water. This is so you aren't tired in class and you aren't dehydrated. If you drink a lot of water, you can use the head (bathroom) during class to stay awake. 3. Study your training guide during free time, especially when you're on watch. I would even suggest you ask to be on ship staff (you clean for like an hour everyday around the ship and stand watch every 2 days). 4. Learn to tie a bowline knot. Not very important, but being the person who knows how to tie it is a very good idea so you can teach others how to do it. 5. Listen and do as you're told, even if it sounds stupid or unusual. Don't argue with leadership and try not to be noticed by the RDCs for anything bad. 6. Don't get mixed with the wrong crowd. There are going to be idiots in your DIV, don't be associated with them, then you'll find yourself getting in trouble because you associate with them. Often they cause the DIV more harm because they fall out of line more often than not. Good luck, be sure to journal stuff so you have a way of actually voicing yourself because the RDCs can seem very distant and it's usually very difficult to talk to a chaplain.
