Recruitment issues leaving NC Highway Patrol more than 200 troopers short

2 troopers were fired recently for giving too many tickets, then scrutinized for harrassment on the news. Bah! Humbug! Repeat Offenders will obviously get more than one ticket . . BECAUSE our courts are a revolving door. Just take a look at Seattle!!! For these reasons, I'm not applying because I don't want to get fired for trying to do my job. Nope! Not applying. Could be another reason why they are short, you know?

I was an applicant for the current class going through the academy right now. I was disqualified and not told why now I have to wait 5 years before I can reapply; by that time I’ll be aged out. I have the utmost respect for the Highway Patrol; but if they need recruits they need to change some things on qualifications.

They normally tell an applicant why they did not qualify or if you didn’t make it past the review board

They think the lack of troopers are bad the prison CO's are like 12 officers to 800+ inmates but for the requirements they look for its not surprising why its so low

@@vexzarkov7791 This is true. I worked for DPS (they cover Highway Patrol and the Prisons) at the state prison in Wilmington for 2 years, and the turnover rate was ridiculous. I was lucky to get 3 days a month off because we were so short staffed. A short day for me was 14 hours. Even on days off and vacation they would try calling you in. NCDPS in General is so short staffed I’m surprised they still exist.

I would love to see an accident report over the time of the population increase. Because i am willing to bet that the number of accidents hasn't changed in proportion to the shortage of state troopers. Only population. Cops dont make people drive safer.

There are sheriff and police departments doing the same thing as Trooper does so there is no point saying "Troopers Short". We have Deputies and Officers doing the exact same thing they do.

Pay is too LOW..and the beat areas are in the middle of no where! Average salary in California for a Police Officer/CHP is 90,000 to 100,000 dollars.

@@connerymartin2952 The housing is cheap in a sense that you get a lot more for the money, but if you take their starting salary at 35K/year, which is literally $2,000/month after taxes. You won't be able to afford a 300K house and you won't be able to afford a nice car.............so this whole "cost of inflation" doesn't really add up in my opinion.

@@EJ257IHI FHA housing loans + agency-issued vehicles. There go your two main expenses. And for being w/o a college degree, 37 a year is not bad. Should it be 50? Yes, but that is a starting number. But it isn't and troopers in rural areas are the only ones living confortably after a few years in. (6 years in is around 57). Regardless, retirement can't be beat.

1. Stop making the hiring process so difficult. 2.stop being so selective and picky. 3. Eliminate the upper age limit so older applicants such as military and other law enforcement can apply. 4. The written exam shouldn't be so difficult to pass.

If you have a college degree, you should be able to pass the written test. Over half of state troopers don’t have degrees.

They wouldnt be so short handed if they weren't so dang picky. I tried 3 times and had great test scores, even with many yrs of law enforcement experience under my belt I got shot down by SHP each time. Oh well.

JJ BEATZ Troopers rarely get shot at, that’s mostly sheriffs and city cops, all troopers deal with is the highway, the potential of deadly force is there, but most of the time it’s not worth shooting someone over a speeding ticket or just money in general.

Whoopity Doo it makes sense to think it’s because of cars, but it’s actually gunfire. My thought is troopers are usually alone, and a suspect takes a chance more often vs a city cop with back up on scene or very close. These NC are infamous for being shitty to citizens though. That Superman reputation can work against them as well.

They need let some people with work permits or green cards or whatever work for them also I know a lot of immigrants who have daca or green cards that would love to work for highway patrol especially my friend from the Netherlands but he told me that in NC they have a ton of requirements.
