Thanks Ashe! You saved me an afternoon. Now I have my bow perfectly aligned!

Really been wanting to say this for a while, but that intro at 0:24 is so cool! And also, thank you very much for the lesson 😊

That's a great video, thanks. I know that it may sound silly but i think a very basic thing to also check is...that the long rod is straight. Today i was checking the alignment and i was horrified to see that my long rod was completely on the right with respect of the string. I almost started the alignment process but then i fortunately first checked the straightness of the long rod...figuring out that for some reason it was bent.

Great advice! However, aligning limbs always having to unstrung the bow means loosing visual reference of how much was limb moved to the side with the alignment screw. If the bow is strung, you immediately see how much limb was moved to the side when you turn the screw, which makes limb alignment so much quicker.

At the end of the day if you can do it and get it aligned it's all good :) I'd definitely check it hasn't moved after you shoot a few shots through it though.

Is there anything if u change in the bow eg. Poundage or brace height will change the string alignment?
@OnlineArcheryAcademy4 жыл бұрын
It can slightly, so always check the limb alignment after you make a poundage or tiller change :) Brace height won't change the alignment (or shouldn't if the limbs are straight!!).

Does anyone make a narrow gauge that'll work for a longbow limb ???

what advice do you have for not having a long rod? I shoot barebow.

Great video and channel. May I ask how I should do it on a barebow (no long rod)? Would the plunger button be a good reference point?
@OnlineArcheryAcademy4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Good point! I would try and borrow a longrod if you can just for the aligning :) But failing that you can still align both limbs relative to each other which is the most important stage. Lastly you can ensure when lined up that you can slightly see the 'face' of the riser shelf when looking down the arrow - there's some more detail on my site here: www.onlinearcheryacademy.com/recurve-tuning/#tuning-2-limbalignment

Could be nice if you show the process of turn left or right with the allen keys, for this (like me) that never touched their riser.

Another great and detailed video. I notice you didn't mention anything about aligning the bow on plane though? Aligning the limbs to the long rod is all well and good but doing this results in my own bow being off plane I.E. the distance of string from each flat edge of the riser is a few mm out from being on plane. Would you still align the limbs to the long rod regardless of plane?

Same question. I had real problems when I aligned my first bow with the old second hand long rod I had as it was way off. Someone at my local archery shop rescued me. The bow I use now also aligns with the long rod very slightly off. I watched this hoping there was a better way of judging the plane of the bow.

This is the second pro archer (the other being Jake Kaminski) that has discussed aligning the bow at length without really mentioning or going into detail about the plane of the bow. Which makes me wonder whether it's more important just to align everything with the long rod and not worry so much about the plane...which doesn't really make sense to me 🤷♂️ the riser I have now is exactly the same as the one here (Wiawis ATF) yet when I align everything with the long rod (also Wiawis, which is perfectly straight), the bow is off plane by a good 5mm or so. This is what makes me go round in circles and go batshit crazy 😛

Good question - for any good modern riser the limbs and longrod should be aligned and in the correct plane when the limb adjustment is fairly near the middle. So if I need to move both the limb adjustments very far to one side to get in line with the longrod then this is an indicator it might be off plane as you say. 90% of the time aligning it with the longrod gets it in or very close to being in plane, and you can check the small visibility of the riser face to check this. If you think it might be out of plane you should check the longrod for straightness, remove any extra stabilisers and attachments and check the alignment again. Washers, attachments, quick releases or bent stabiliser bushings can all make the longrod angle to one side so if you're unsure the best thing to do is to only put the longrod on and remove all other attachments :)

What about if you are a bare bow shooter and dont own a long rod?
@OnlineArcheryAcademy4 жыл бұрын
Good point! I'd try and borrow one if possible just to help you line it up - but just doing the limbs without the long rod is better than nothing :)

Are there any problems in using the long rod as a means of aligning in assuming that the long rod (and/or any V-bar / extenders) is/are perfectly perpendicular to the riser, particularly if one uses plastic washers to seat the long rod in place to help stop it unscrewing through vibration ?
@Waltham18924 жыл бұрын
I just screwed up my tune by trying to adjust it strung. This might be worth a try.

I had problems with moving the limbs toward the long rod, which totally messed me up. I would align the limbs to each other, then align to the long rod, and move it the wrong way (towards the long rod). Thanks for confirming that was the problem (lots of swearing along the way). If you have problems sighting the string and Beiter blocks, lean against the wall or use your cell phone to get a picture of the correct view.

If the bow is unstrung how will you ever use it as a metric for alignment? Does it not have to be in the saddles and under tension?
