Yes we say loo roll or toilet rolls too here in Northern Ireland Catherine. I'm watching this in July 2021. I grow my sweet pea seeds in those little pots but I've never bothered to fold the bottoms in just filled them with the cheapest compost and put the seeds in. My window sills are full like yours in late Winter early Spring so everything will be ready to go out when the frosts are passed. I use old telephone directories scrap paper and newspapers that people give me to make enough pots for my veg seeds too. Another way to use the sweetie boxes is to put a couple of holes in the bottom with a hot poker or a drill if you have one or even a nail and hammer for drainage then plant some spring bulbs like daffodils crocuses snowdrops or whatever and give that as a present or keep for yourself! Love your channel Catherine...tis keeping me from climbing the bloody walls at the moment so thank you and God bless you love! Vera

I agree, seeds are so fun! When we started our garden and people found out, it was like we had joined the secret "garden club" or something! People get really excited talking about gardening with other gardeners, and they share seeds, and give advice, etc. Nice to feel part of a happy hobby community! :)

Great job. Sunflowers are super easy to grow. The birds planted one for me next to my fence from their feeders. Sunflowers don't need alot of tending. I have some that grew 18feet tall. Birds and bees love them.

i've made a lot of pillow boxes (from cardstock) but never from a toilet roll and i've got to give it a try - yours were beautiful! love decoupage too so loved this video. And the seed starters - wonderful idea. i've gotta get busy. Sunflowers are so beautiful. Our local elementary school kids would plant them all along the fencing in front of the school near the end of the year. Parents would keep them watered all summer long and the sunflowers would be a gorgeous site at the beginning of the school year. They don't do it anymore - such a pity. I think I may plant a few in my yard using your seed starter idea. Thanks so much Catherine

I am in the USA, and I do say loo roll, but that is because I watch so many British and Irish videos and television programs, lol. Grew up calling it toilet paper rolls. I liked how you cut and folded the bottoms. I see a lot of people, like one of my faves, Monty Don, and also Cliff at Castle Hill Garden, using loo rolls instead of root trainers, particularly for sweet peas, but I haven't seen them folding the bottoms before. I will try this. Thank you!

We say toilet in the U.S. but either works! That's great ideas for the loo rolls lol. I like that word better. :) I love starting seedlings. It's so satisfying watching them sprout and grow. My Granny always did this. Taught me how when I was a child. She also dried her apples from their orchard. Made the BEST fried apple pies ever! And made apple dumplings, but not the whole apple wrapped the way they make them now. She took rehydrated, sweetened apples (cooked with water, sugar and cinnamon or apple pie spice) made her home made dumplings, and added a spoonful to the center of a piece, piched it closed, and put them in boiling water sweetened and spiced the same way...they were soooo delicious! She's been gone for many years, but I will always remember those pies and dumplings and how to make them. I hope your sunflowers sprout big and tall! Then you will have your own seeds! She also saved seeds for veggies. Tomatoes (technically fruit), cucumbers, squash, (courgettes). We say squash because their are sooo many varieties (I'm guessing? I don't really know why LOL.) Great job Catherine! Stay safe and well. Hugs, Deb

I like using styrofoam coffee cups with a hole poked in the bottom so I could write the start date and variety on them. I hope you’re going to share your gardening experiences and results with us. This was just in time for mother's day 💐 (second Sunday of May here) The pillow wrappers are perfect for any holiday trinkets. I found that if I put decoupage/mudpudge glue only on the top, the paper didn't wrinkle as much, depending of the thickness. Waiting for warmer temperature for seedling here (still 5° at night) Keep the DIY coming 👍

l love yr craft idea's. lm going to give this a go & fill mine with hm rose potpourri to place in vintage containers around the house. l'll make holes in back of 'pillows' with large darning needle ( in a rose design) to let scent come out., im hoping it works. I do a lots of seed saving plus l grow 'free' flower plants fr bunches of supermarket flowers ie rose stems & spray carnations are so easy to root. I now have lots of spray carnations in containers on my patio that lv had for many yrs.

Love the pillow box ideas. Have you tried making a book from the toilet rolls? You flatten them either by pressing or running through a die cutter, paint the edges, and glue on pieces of decorative paper about 1/4 inch narrower than then roll (1/8 iinch border all around). You can then punch through one end of each roll and add book rings, or just make hinges to bind them together. I made covers for mine from cereal box cardboard covered in paper. The bonus? Each page is also a pocket, so you can add small cards for pictures or notes.

I do the planting in the rolls. I do not fold up the bottom. I cut them in half, and pack the dirt in tight at the bottom. It holds just fine and then your plant roots can just go right out the bottom. The planting mix needs to be a little bit moist for it to pack down.
