The sanitation company no longer replaces their recycling bin. Fixing it makes more sense to me than purchasing a new one.
If you look closely at 4:02 you’ll see why I couldn’t get the epoxy out. I failed to remove the little black stopper that goes on the end of the opened tubes.

We have a gray bin that costs about 170 bucks to replace- as of 2019- October. You’re right... these older plastics do fracture; cold is not a problem in Louisiana , but heat will impact everything ( plus floods, hurricanes )- our bins are owned by the city, but getting anyone to repair just a lid is impossible... I’m glad that I’m not the only one who has an issue ...( ps these bins , the older ones( blue) are easily fractured or split. Nice video... new subscriber today... from hurricane alley - Louisiana

Cathy Arnett thanks for subscribing. I’ve been thinking I should do a follow up video for awhile. It’s still holding today just like it is in the video. $170 is a lot for a replacement! When we called the company they offered to send us stickers that said “recycling “ for our new bin. Thanks for watching and commenting, stay safe

Congrats! Good job and it will last, like you want it to. I'm doing something similar, using metal strapping tape with holes every inch. My can cover is only cracked around the edge on front and side. The can is 17 years old and they won't replace the cover anymore. They want me to buy a new recycling can. It defeats the idea of recycling!!!!

I totally agree. I recently did have to replace it. I’m not sure how they did it but the recycling people managed to blow out the entire front of the thing. The hole was 2’ wide and 3’ long. The company did replace it with a smaller bin and now they only pick it up every other week. Good luck with yours

Wonder if you could make a patch from the epoxies for a two inch hole a squirrel chewed in a similar can lid? Does this epoxy shrink? Thanks!
@LSatch
@LSatch 5 жыл бұрын
Ghibli Inu that’s a problem. The epoxy failed after a couple of weeks of the recycling guys rough handling. Depending on what you have, you could cut out a piece from a plastic bottle like milk or bleach. You can get 1/4 “ self driving screws at the hardware store and use those to secure it. Put them about one half to 1 inch apart. If you have tin snips you could cut the patch out of a tin can. Good luck.

I have holes in the lid if my garbage can and mice or squirrels have been getting into it. And when it rains it’s filling up with water. I don’t know how to fix it. :-(

As someone else mentioned for the cracks, waterproof flex tape or gorilla tape will hold the lid together. The hinge is a whole other story

Thanks for sharing. They finally managed to break it beyond repair and they replaced it for free, of course the new one is much smaller and now they only pick it up every other week.

I have that very trash can. I just fixed ours with two items:Flex Steel and duct tape. Worked fantastic and wasn't complicated like this idea. I came across this searching for a way to fix our galvanized metal trash can, which is used for ashes from our large pit. Around the bottom there are holes from rust. I made a mistake of leaving it on the grass during winter months. Any ideas??...anyone?? Oh, I lightly sprayed a layer of Flex Steel over the tape after placing it where needed. Two very simple steps!

Thanks for watching. They finally finished off our can about a month ago by creating a long crack down the front. It lasted over 4 years and they replaced it for free. I’ve never used flex steel so I’m no help there. I’m not sure what your next step might be, hopefully someone will see this and offer more help. Thanks for watching

BrianRDub sorry, can’t give your time back but at 9:33 or so it shows the bin as is. I’ll do a follow up this week I promise it will be short and to the point. Look for it by the end of the week. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Good idea but one thing I would have done with that piece of metal I would got a blow lamp and I would heat up the metal at the side then make it a bit soft that you can bend it into the shape that you wish to put it onto instead of banging it and burning it over with a pair of pliers it would be easy and then you won't need to Bend it Like the Way You Are I would have used a blow lamp you do not need to be a blacksmith to do that you just need a blow lamp and just idea to do it

Great idea, wish I would have thought of that. They finally managed to destroy it, they cracked it from top to bottom. But my fix lasted a couple of years.

Nope, about 3 months ago they broke the entire front of it out. Everything I fixed was still doing great but they cracked it all the way down the front. They replaced it with a smaller one and now they only pick up that one every other week. Very disappointing.

Larry Satchwell Just some advice if you do buy a new lid, (some from experience, I empty recycle bins and we carry replacement parts on the truck): - make sure it’s the same company that made that bin that made the new lid, every company has different measurements (that bin looks like a Rehrig, which unfortunately don’t have a good reputation for durability) - if the lid pins get damaged when taking out the old lid, make sure the lid you buy comes with new lid pins, or you buy some new ones separately
