So the Stealth Crate giving submarine properties and effects goes back to Red Alert 1 where one of the Expansion missions had a "Phase Tank" Which used the same properties. A pretty amusing outcome. Sadly Ore Crate is kinda useless as Ore doesn't self spread unlike Tiberium...

things like exploding crates and the "IonStorm" crate remind me that this game probably shares some code with Tiberian Sun. I wouldn't be surprised if there's still a parameter in there for damage dealt to units when walking across Ore, but it's just 0 everywhere now.

To explain how the cloaking crate works for those who don't know stealth was carried over from tib sun and reused for submerged units (additional water sound effects were added to sell the illusion) Thus anything that can normally detect subs can then detect any units that picked the crate up, which sadly is mostly naval units

Cloaked units actually started in Command and Conquer 95, whereas the Stealth Tank was invisible to enemies, but looked like a watery substance to the player. This was traded with the shadow as seen for the submarines in Red Alert.

Hey, I have actually seen the ICBM crate used before! Not sure what map it was, but in one of the skirmish maps in ra2YR there is a constant stream of vehicles passing down a road. One of those vehicles is the pickup truck + crate and it drops a wide variety of crates, including ICBM

There is only one nuke in the vanilla game. The most you can do without using the Ares DLL is modifying the damage of the nuke in a mission or mod.

@@CnCDune sorry, i am a little confused, are we speaking about RA or RA2/YR? See, in first Red Alert in single player and multiplayer nuke had different properties. SP nuke was much stronger and had additional visual effects (it was exact copy of TD nuke). Reason i thought that ICBM was stronger SP nuke is that internaly MP nuke is called Nuke, so i figured there must be two versions of superweapon.

@@CnCDune well, i am not so sure myself about RA. What is certain is that SP and MP nukes are different, but i do not know how difference is achieved. SP nuke in RA is exact copy of TD nuke. It has larger AOE, damages everything and unlike MP nuke it has "flash" effect, which turns screen white when nuke detonates. MP nuke is weaker - it has smaller AOE, no flash effect, smaller "Mushroom cloud sprites", it also does little damage to vehicles since nuke damage type is just acopy of fire damage type.

In one time I found crates that give some "exotic" units such as: cyborg comando-who pretty much overkilled vehicles and infantries when reached veteran; a weird robot walker that shoots desolator beam-handling infantries well but did nothing when fighting other vehicles; last but not least a rocket-firing tank that can chronoshift anywhere. That's alone always motivates me to scan the map.

It seems that they wanted to implement the same kinds of crates that existed in Red Alert 1. There, there were also parabomb, nuke, invisibility, invulnerability, explosion and darkness crates.

The crates you see here are left-overs, anywhere from barely functional (only playing an animation, like IonStorm, Invulnerability), fully functional (ICBM, cloak), or completely busted (Squad). ParaBomb, Sonar and TimeQuake no longer exist after RA1 in TibSun, much less RA2.

I remember some of this crates in the first red alert 2 CDs when the game was release, some features like libya can make airfield and build MIG, Soviets has flamethrower dudes, even spies, Allied has portable Powerplant like an MCV, and korea has 2 types of GIs normal ones and Gs with flak as weapon. Missing this game so badly. Brings back memories.

@@MrPathorn ohh, it creates a sphere-shaped vortex, and moves slowly around the map in a certain amount of time. anything it touches would get damaged and if long enough, demolished, destroyed or killed. never tested it with a vehicle that was applied with iron curtain

Invulnerability - Unit becomes immune to damage for a moment. IonStorm - Weather Control Device Attack. Pod - No Idea Squad - No Idea Para Bomb - Drop para bomb anywhere. Sonar - See enemy units for a moment TimeQuake - Speeds up a unit significantly.

The fun thing about submerged units is that they only appear under the water due to the cloak effect and the fact that the water is fairly uniform in color compared to land. "Gas" is interesting as in Tib Sun, it releases Tiberium gas that corrodes materials and causes infantry to break down into Visceroids. The reason for the yellow color is due to using a broken palette and the clouds are that of the Lightning Storm which is why they disappear like that. IonStorm: Supposed to summon an Ion Storm in Tib Sun. Pod: Supposed to give you a Drop Pod in Tib Sun but went unused. Squad: Red Alert 1, Gives you a squad of infantry. ParaBomb: Red Alert 1, which would give you a free use of said ability. Sonar: Red Alert 1, gives you a Sonar which briefly reveals submerged/cloaked units. TimeQuake: Red Alert 1, creates a Time Quake which I don't know what it does exactly.

The ore an old ra1 crate, for the darkness crate it did reintroduce in one of the games. ICBM and cloak crate are one of the crates that I never seen before. Explode crate did appear in Tiberian sun. But the rest is unknown.

Darkness Crate was around since the first game but was only featured in multiplayer for Command and Conquer 95. In Red Alert 2, however, it was when the crates were all goody crates. I ran into a lot of problems in Tiberian Sun when dealing with bad die rolls on crate spawns.

There is actually one map in skirmish in YR where you have to blow a specific buildings in to get the ICBM. Also what happen in mine is that I have a double nuke missile and then once you used it it disappear.

Darkness crate was used in Dune2000 as an opposite of “map reveal” as there’s no building or skill in the game to reveal the map, same for explosion. Dune2000 also have stealth units like Fremen. Interesting that there is no infantry crate in RA2 anymore, but did exist in RA1, Dune2000 and maybe CNC. Parabomb invulnerability both were RA1 thing though, which is very cool.

Despite the Dune games under Westwood's name being quite good, they unfortunately don't factor into engine-related discussions because they used their own engines. With the exception of Dune 2: it used the C&C engine, like TibDawn, RA1, TibSun, RA2. Dune 2000 used a different engine, made by Intelligent Games - to whom development was outsourced to, because Westwood was busy with TibSun. Emperor: Battle for Dune also used a completely different engine, called Xanadu - it didn't use Renegade's W3D or EA's SAGE as many assume. But you're right, it's a shame some crate that work fine in RA1, but then were broken in TibSun and never fixed for RA2 - the IC-crate in particular would've been fun in RA2.

I think, most of these unused crates have sense in Tiberian Sun. At least if I am not mistaken, you can find objects in the editor what does not have sense in RA2, but they are there in TS, like trains and tracks. Also, I was able to build an upgradeable power station, something similar to the TS version. That was long time ago O_O

it's the RA Sonar Pulse, which has no effect in Tiberian Sun and RA2 because the appropriate superweapon code is not implemented in those games.

Kinda glad some of these didn't make it in, they would have been dramatically unbalanced like the free nuke. However some are neat ideas they just needed some work. Ore - Love the idea, but yeah it needs to spawn a huge field of gems instead. Would make a tremendous late game crate. Darkness - Hell no. Especially not if I'm forced to sell a Spy Satellite. Don't even make this reset my enemy's fog of war - this is just cruel. Nuke - Only as a special option for skirmishes that can be turned off, like "Crazy Crates". And it would have to give a free nuke to someone who already has a nuke silo on countdown. Otherwise though, way too unbalanced. Cloak - ... a fascinating idea, but would fit better if there were cloaked units in RA2 aside from the underwater units. It feels really satisfying seeing land units cloak though. So yeah it'd be a good late game crate if units don't auto attack with it. Exploding crates - ... No thanks. Don't make me scared to pick up a crate.

Regarding Ore, Darkness and Nuke: if they are as broken as they are, that can only mean that WW took TS and modified it, but had decided pretty early on to remove those crates; otherwise they would have worked properly: Darkness neutralized when another SpySat was built or Reveal crate collected (the latter works; both crates used to be in TS), Ore being less random and adjustable by modders, and Nuke working as you described. Regarding Nuke: it was already in TS as "Cluster/Multi Missile", so I wonder if the crate's bugged behaviour actually originated from TS and WW could never fix it, so they decided to scrap the Nuke crate. Explosion crates make the game a bit more... risky, wouldn't you agree?

Will there be a test for garrisons? Compare Red Alert 2 (before Yuri's Revenge) to Yuri's Revenge. Test with different units, different number of garrisoned units, promoted units, and so on. Compare damage to normal infantry, tanks, and so on.

If (when?) this game gets remastered, I hope the code will be "touched-up" and many of those unused features will be completed. Maybe have a setting in the Skirmish menu of "Additional Crate Selection" or something similar, so the player can choose whether to have only the classic Crates (Armor, Speed, Firepower, Veterancy, Map Reveal, Credits, Unit Spawn) or the expanded set.

Prior crates just had more risk whenever they're collected; just like lottery, where you either win or lose based on probability and luck alone. In RA2 and YR, the "lose" risk was removed.

I don't think I've encountered any of those in missions. I would remember.

They were cut, and in some cases completely broken. One (Squad) was even made to do what Money does, somehow (either complete rework, or just "don't do this, do that instead."). If they were used, it was in TibSun and FS and then never again, not even in missions. Mods, however, are a different story.

rules.ini section crateeffects if memory serves. parameters for each crate type are shares of total chance, then magnitude. Beware that in RA and Tiberian Sun 1.0 a chance of 0 is not actually 0 and doesn't disable the crate.

I don't think so. I tried attacking and it used it's cannon instead of it's Osprey.

Yes. Destroyers have sensors that pick up cloaked units like subs. Or stealth tanks.

VehicleTypes that deploy into BuildingTypes lose their crate-cloaking when transforming. And vice-versa. So no, cloaked MCVs & ConYards only if you play Tiberian Sun as Nod or a TibSun/RA2-mod that has Stealth Generators. BuildingTypes in range of a cloak-crate stay cloaked tho.

your original version might be modded.

You're playing a modded version of the game - either modded via rules INI or a map that enables them. See link in description, these crates are not are hard to re-enable at all - just distribute crate-shares appropriately.

Thanks for posting. But the music is really too loud and totally unsuitable for the video. Besides, you are demonstrating the sound of units which is hard to discern when this music plays.

Hey, I actually added the music to make it a bit more interesting. I don't think it's too loud but in any case I don't think it "negates" the other sounds. I usually make sure that something like doesn't happen on my videos but I will keep your suggestion in mind. Thank you.

@@SU76M They probably just missed it, then. Or just don't know about it - you have to remember, these crates are left-overs in the engine-code, back from (beta) TibSun at least. When the RA2-page was made on TCRF, they probably didn't know about the left-over crates.
