Red Bull operates Eurocopter BO-105 Helicopters in the aerobatics which come from the factory with 'Hingeless' Rotor System, not 'Rigid' such as the Lockheed AH-56 Cheyenne Attack Helicopter, circa late 1960's, that lost out on an Army contract to the Bell AH-1G Cobra for use in Vietnam. I flew Messerschmitt-Bölkow-Blohm BO-105's for the Virginia State Police as a Trooper-Pilot, the Dept. had three of them at one time, which were operated on their 'EMS Med-Flight' Medical Evacuation Program.

This helicopter was modified. Read the description. You can't do any of these stunts in a normal BO-105, or any other normal chopper.

Yes , you can. A Westland Lynx can do these stunts with an unmodified airframe.

It's amazing to think that nuts, bolts, & rivets can cope with the kind of forces that pilots like these put on that airframe. Hat's off to this pilot. You sir, have very big kahunas.

Amazing if people only knew how much it takes to just fly one of these let alone doing any type of flying like that. I can't put in to words how talented that pilot is !!!!!! Just a quick sample it takes 3 constant input controls to just get it in the air and you always have to be aware of the airspeed, altitude not to mention avoiding the vortex ring and keeping recovery height!!! AMAZING !!!

Heli loops are old news. Hughes rolled out the AH-64 Apache in '83. It can loop as well.

It's more difficult to do these maneuvers with a helicopter compared to a conventional aircraft. That's what make it amazing.
@bebay2914 жыл бұрын
I do believe for a helicopter to fly upside down the rotor rotation would have to reverse which in theory would work, so the helicopter is pulled down when upside down. This seems the most logical reasons why it looks like a free fall.
@Bredgy100912 жыл бұрын
Surely there's only a few pilots in the world that can do this or even attempt it for that matter!! Crazy skills!! ;)

the blades have variable pitch so when its upside down it can push up in relation to the pilots.

@cascadeSC actually, from the first flip, you can see the ground when in falls doing a flip. and if he turned the camera, the ground would have flipped too
@fowlerhound14 жыл бұрын
thats the bo105. one of the best helicopters in the world.
@Orange4Evar12 жыл бұрын
The pilot modified the rotors to be stronger, because in an unmodified helicopter, if you were to go upside, the rotors would bend, and chop the tail off.
@nebulaorion7162 жыл бұрын
even if its modified thats some amazing collective pitch skills.. even normal heli blades change pitch witch changes airflow from up to down....... its not the blade speed that causes lift in a heli its the pitch of the blades that can be changed at will via the collective stick
@JoeSmoe100114 жыл бұрын
@popcornlagace Not from the pilot, the throttle is handled by a governor that's sole purpose is to keep the rotor head spinning at a set RPM. Changing the pitch of the rotor blades allows the rotors to either pull the chopper up or push it down, depending on whether the chopper is upside down or not. With negative pitch and the chopper upside down the rotors will push the chopper upwards rather than pull it towards the ground.

@Bill56569 It does thanks. It's a question I've been wanting an answer to for some time:-) With fixed wing GA aircraft most joining circuits seem to be flown in a left turn pattern, mostly, so maybe that's why they sit on the left because as you say, it affords them better vision. Most naval pilots however sit on the right, and one reason I have for this is because most control towers on airctraft carriers are also on the right. Better vision again. Maybe this spread to civilian use.

@JoeSmoe100114 жыл бұрын
It's not the "design" that's the issue. It's the weight of the helicopter itself. The fuel, fuselage, pilot, etc. all contribute to it not being able to hover inverted. While you can fly an RC helicopter in an inverted hover without much issue, once you scale things up it becomes far more complex.

I asked an RAF chopper pilot back in the 80's at an airshow (RAF St Mawgan) how this is done and he said it's not exactly a 360 degree as such but the pilot 'rolls' out of it, as is evidenced here.Maybe it's not strictly possible? but anyway, this is an extremely skillfull pilot, not for the fainthearted.
